Definitely the English names. The puns don't work as well in Japanese unless you know what the words mean in Japanese.

Let's see... it's a Japanese game, taking place in a Japanese city in Japan with Japanese characters

Yeah, I prefer the Japanese names

I do like the name "Miles Edgeworth" though but only because of how edgy it sounds

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not but no, it doesn't

In the original version it takes place in a small town somewhere in Japan

Seems people that have not played the games prefer the japanese names. I myself have not played ghe game and I think the english names are cooler. Especially Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth.

Unfortunately the subs are using the english names. For subs - since the japanese voice actors in the anime are speaking the japanese names - I would have prefered the japanese names. Feels a bit weird to read names that are different from the ones acutally spoken.

Either works but PLEASE don't use the English names in the subs when you have the Japanese ones in the audio. It's distracting as hell

Pick one or the other, not both at the same time. If you're watching it subbed then it should always be using the Japanese names. English names if you're watching it dubbed

To put it bluntly, it honestly depends on the character. A prime example of this would be the main character
Phoenix Wright /Naruhodou Ryuiichi:
The English name is better, hands down, to the point where even some of the Japanese media (Notably, the musical), uses the English name. In terms of why, in terms of surname, both Naruhodou and Wright are pretty much the same thing, it's really the Phoenix/Ryu difference that changes things up: In the Japanese version, the name 'Ryu' was merely because the character creator just wanted to come up with a name that sounded good, the idea of the name meaning 'dragon', literally wouldn't come into play until the 3rd game. Meanwhile, the english name had a purpose, namely, it alludes to his 'turnabout' nature. A key aspect not only of the character, but of the franchise itself.

I meant, if anime wasn't released, very few would care about Japanese names. Maybe only Japanese people.

Now anime is released. People who don't like localization or dub are new "fan" of this series.
Fanbase is split into 2 groups on names.

looking at this post, ofc i guess this question is probably related to the anime.
Before i move on, I played the game in english.

I feel that if the anime is in japanese, stick to japanese names would be the best.

The first time i got frustrated was during the second case where "maya" 's name is written on the receipt.

Anyone who knows a bit of Japanese will know it says "mayoi" (マヨイ). It kinda get confused for a while.

As of Phoenix Wright, Naruhodo Ryuichi is the name in japanese. Naruhodo is literally "oh i see". The Japanese kinda made fun oh it.

There are some other names like "Konakamasaru" (小中大) aka Redd White. it is more weird and funny in the japanese names, but the english is not really ... sounds like a legit name. To literal translation those kanji, it can be small medium big or small in big.
(I kinda read it in chinese tho, and laughed at it a little at how weird the names can get.)

There are some other things that are not names that i want to mention
like another minors ones like "burgers" which is maya's fav in the english, the voice clearly said miso ramen. I m confused halp ;;;

I feel that, if there are things only japanese would understand. subber could try to explain it.

The names are good in both versions, with each having some that are better, and some a bit less impressive. The big issue for me is that, while I know and enjoy the English names too, the dissonance from seeing a translation I know is not just wrong, but completely different, is aggravating. I would strongly support a dub for the series using the English names, but it's just too awkward to watch subtitled that way.

Edit: It doesn't help that I know enough about US law to have problems suspending disbelief in the completely different court system portrayed.

The Japanese names. Why would you change the names in the sub and not in the voices? It really pisses me off hearing one name in the voices and reading another name in the subs. In fact, it makes me not want to watch the anime. The names make more sense than the English ones too imo, like the name of our protagonist. Although, that may be because I have studied Japanese lol.

I don't mind if you change the names in dubs for whatever reason, but use the same names as the voices. Be coherent.

The English names by far. I've never played the games but I'd heard enough about them in passing to know that the main characters were called Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth. I actually didn't find out that there even were Japanese names until I watched the first episode on a site that had uploaded the Japanese name track of the subs and got really confused. If you're gonna sub something for an audience that knows nothing but the localisation then be faithful to that localisation. Can you imagine how chaotic it would be if a Street Fighter anime's English subs used the Japanese names, for example? Luckily those were all dubbed anyway.

Why would there not be a budget for it? Animes much less popular than this have gotten dubs, even without considering the fact that this is an incredibly famous franchise.

All the character names are puns/paraody of some sort. That's why they needed to translate the names. Unless you know a good deal of japanese, you wont get them. As you anime only watchers continue to watch the series you will hear a lot more of these names.

Phoenix Wright - "Phoenix" because of his ability to "rise from the ashes" when things look impossible. "Wright" because in the end he's always right.
Winston Payne - Winced in pain.
Cindy Stone - Cinder blocks.
Larry Butz - Hairy Butt.
Frank Sahwit - Frank saw it.
Fey family - Fey probably comes from Morgana le Fey, a fictional sorceress.
Miles Edgeworth - Edgeworth is probably from "the edge of a sword". Reference to his sharp mind.
Dick Gumshoe - Both names are slang for "detective".
April May - Literally just the two months.
Redd White - Combined with his company, the colors of the American flag.
Marvin Grossberg - Grossberg means "big mountain" in German.
Will Powers - Willpower
Jack Hammer - Jackhammer.
Wendy Oldbag - Windy old bag.
Sal Manella - Salmonella.
Cody Hackins - Code hacking
Dee Vasquez - Divaesque.
Penny Nichols - Penny and Nickel, reference to her being a collector.
Manfred von Karma - Manfred means "man of peace", somewhat ironic in his case.

A lot more from here
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/939946-phoenix-wright-ace-attorney-dual-destinies/67849180

When you look at this, you gotta give the translators some credit. They put some thought into every name.
