A lot of the times yes I'm having to keep an eye on budget for the month but I honestly don't have as much to buy personally anymore. I realized at some point that all the stuff you buy ends up collecting dust on some shelf, what you actually need isn't that much.

A sheltered brat like you wouldn't understand how expensive it is to live nowadays.

Cheap rents in the US vary depending on the area, but in urban areas they can go up to 1500, and in the suburban and rural areas they're around 750. Some of those rents include utilities but some don't, which means you can pay a few hundred extra in total. Paying for your own TV, internet and phone can cost about 200 dollars extra as well, so add like 500 to that.

Car payments can be expensive if you don't own a car. You can expect to pay about 400 dollars in total a month if you're buying a car and have car insurance (required by all modern countries).

If you make 2k dollars a month, you'll only have a tiny bit left to spend money on. That leaves very little money for food, and no money whatsoever for medical bills and car repair bills and so forth.

I won't deny if your household income is near poverty line it can be an issue, but for the majority that's exaggerated. The median USA household income is 50k, that's more than double of the 2k/month quoted.

There are a lot of low wage workers in America:

According to the Economic Policy Institute’s State of Working America, a stunning 35 million Americans – 26 percent of our workforce – earn less than $10.55 an hour.

The following table, courtesy of the Economic Policy Institute, shows the demographics of workers making less than $9.72 an hour:

http://www.raisetheminimumwage.com/pages/demographics

Second, you can be well above the poverty line and still have major issues surviving. For example, the PhD stipend for an MIT student is about 28000 dollars, but rent in the Boston-Cambridge area is extremely expensive (can be at least 1500 dollars to find a suitable rent).

And plus:
