What is the best thing anime pioneer Go Nagai has brought to the genre?

This is generally a question for anime historians or Go Nagai fans.

Introducing female heroines (Cutie Honey)
According to Nagai, Cutie Honey was the first action show to have a female character as the main hero character; action shows at the time only had men. It paved the path for female heroines like Sailor Moon and the Dirty Pair Flash. I have to vote for this, it was something pretty significant for anime.

Introducing nudity as comedy
This will probably be what he’s best remembered for: the creation of ecchi. He pioneered it in his 1968 manga Harenchi Gakuen as a means of humor: ladies getting their underwear/body exposed was something that was considered funny at the time. Of course, nowadays ecchi is the thing for just drawing in male viewers. LOOK HOW MUCH FANSERVICE THERE IS IN ANIME!

Introducing dark demonic heroes (Devilman)
He was the first to portray a hero as a distinctly anti-heroic character, in the grip of a dark power that threatened to consume him and make him a monster. Nagai was trying to make this an anti-war story (him having been in WW2), in that it doesn’t matter whether power is used for good or bad if it destroys and ruins. He would later inspire Hellsing’s Alucard and the Black Butler.

Introducing mecha (Mazinger Z)
Basically he made anime popular before Gundam came along with his show Mazinger Z.

Go Nagai is basically the father of Super Robots. So yea i'd say that's his greatest contribution to the industry.

Mecha had already come at the time that he did Mazinger Z! Tetsujin 28-Gou came 16 years before(It has an anime still running right now in Fuji TV).
Also all the others genres except Ecchi already existed even before Go Nagai touched them.

He didn't introduce female heroines, at least Rose of Versailles existed 1 year before it and I'm almost certain that Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight already had that. The big thing that Go Nagai achieved with Cutie Honey was redefine the Magical Girls(Mahou Shoujo) genre, just like he had done previously with the Mecha as well.

Also the ecchi in Harenchi was totally like the ecchi of today(OK, not like the worst kind of Ecchi) and it had the same intention(Go Nagai even said that he took inspiration from Play Boy magazine), the thing is that the series was also Comedy, not that Ecchi at the time was also comedy.

For dark demonic Heroes there already existed Gegege no Kitaro, the most famous Youkai series ever. It existed 12 years before of Devilman. Probably only the gory part was a new thing that Devilman brought to the table.

I would say that the best thing he brought was Ecchi, that was the only entire genre that he was the 100% creator and the fact that Ecchi is a mega popular thing right now, probably only less popular than the Magical Girls Genre.
The rest was more redefining and directing the genre in the right direction(or at least a super popular one).

Okay, I guess Mazinger and Gundam and Tetsujin were just part of the rising robot craze happening in the 60s-70s.

Princess Knight wasn't too popular though, and Rose of Versailles came out after Cutie Honey. But I will concede that both Honey and Rose contributed greatly to female heroines becoming an established part of anime.

I wonder why it hasn't gotten an anime. But then again it probably wasn't as popular as Honey or Kekko Kamen.

But Kitaro wasn't really horror, just a family story about a bunch of ghouls. Devilman was serious horror and gore.

It depends if you're talking of anime or work overall. Rose of Versailles got its 1st volume in November of 1972, Cutie Honey 1st volume in October of 1973. In terms of anime Cutie Honey came in the exact same month as the manga(this practice is a recurring Go Nagai one), Rose of Versailles came 6 years after the end of the manga in 1979.

Harenchi was mega popular at the time, one of the pillars in the beginning of Weekly Shounen Jump, and as a pillar at that time one of the responsible for making a new magazine turn into the most popular manga magazine in Japan. The reason the series doesn't have an anime is mainly two: At the time anime wasn't as frequent as right now, Harenchi instead of anime got a TV live-action. The series was super polemic, it even got a huge number of parents and institutions burning the comic in public as protest, and it was even forced to not be distributed in some regions of Japan(that include in the Magazine).

Also is to note that it indeed got an anime, specifically an OVA. In term of Live-Action it got a TV series and 5 movies.

Kitaro is totally an horror! More horror than Devilman even. Is basically the origin of the Youkai Myth in Japan(Until that time Japan had a lot of unconnected monsters, like we have Vampires and Werewolves and other things. And with Kitaro the author connected all of them. In reality he includes Vampires and Werewolves in the Youkai Lore). The original story, Hakaba no Kitaro(there is 2008 anime adaptation of it) is pretty gloomy, which differs to Toei animation more kids friendly version.

Where is "All of above" choice?

If I'm not mistaken, he also made the first mahou-shoujo not aimed at girls but at more at boys.

Nagai made the first piloted mecha. Tetsujin 28 was just a robot controlled with external controller.

Yep. I never said that he wasn't a Pioneer of the genre, but that the genre already existed before that. The same thing Happened with Mahou Shoujo where he defined the main transformation(And because Go Nagai is the pervert he is, the naked phase of the transformations happened!).
