Is the 1972 Devilman series worth watching?

I've heard that Devilman Lady is very good and that the OVAs of Devilman are very gory. My question is, is the 1972 series either of these things? I love gore and horror, and this series doesn't seem to be very horror-y compared to the others, so is it good and/or violent?

The 1972 series is much more censored (not censored like blurred gore, but censored like gore not included). But if you really wanna watch it, wait till someone subs the BDs that came out recently (if someone will even sub them). The currently only subbed version is horrible in both subs and video quality.
