I'd go with either Can or The mothers of invention.

All-time or currently?
All-time wise, I think the common answer to this question is Led Zeppelin. I can't vouch for that, though. I haven't listened to enough Zep to say.

Currently.. I really don't know. I don't feel like I'm qualified enough to answer.

IMO there is no most talented rock band ever,
as well as other artists in other genres.
They all have their own talents and charisma.

Not my favorite band but if I had to listen to only 1 band until death, it would be Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Overall, King Crimson. In terms of sheer virtuosity, maybe one of Zappa's groups, U.K. or Return to Forever.

Besides Robert Fripp what talent did King Crimson hold? I ask this seriously not as a means of mockery. I still need to listen to more of King Crimson but I always thought Gentle Giant and Can held more overall talent. Why am I wrong?

Going to go with the boring answer and say the Beatles, to be so diverse and yet so great is commendable. I don't claim to be an expert, though.

When it comes to talent in song writing, this can only really be judged subjectively. There is a long list of rock instrumentalists that I prefer the composition of, yet their technical skill is often lacking. Tortoise, Grizzly Bear and Can come to mind.

When it comes to an objective analysis of technical skill, my guess would be that it's probably Rush. Neil Peart is largely considered to be the most talented drummer to ever live, and for good reason. Geddy Lee is a 10/10 bassist, and on top of this covers vocals, keyboard, and often times rhythm guitar on a bass/guitar double neck in live performances, a very jack-of-all-trades performer that's also very skilled. Alex Lifeson adds to this by being a masterful guitar player, though I have often felt he lacks in his originality to an extent. I can't think of a rock group that has a more technically skilled combination of talent.

Actually i misread the title i thought it said most overrated instead of overall talented. Not to say he wasnt talented just hes hyped more than he should be. But yeah Santana is good.

As for most overall talented band i cant even think of one really. Its hard to choose.

Bill Bruford, Greg Lake, John Wetton, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, eventually Gavin Harrison... Also, beyond pure technical skill, just in terms of the whole package: composition/songwriting, improvisation/band chemistry etc.

Gentle Giant is up there for sure, even if no specific members stand out. That's not a bad thing though. As a unit they are maybe the tightest band ever, and their music is incredibly complex. As far as Can, the only member I've seen brought into these discussions is Jaki Liebezeit. I think he certainly has one of the most distinctive styles of playing, which is part of talent. Also, they're one of the tightest (and yet loosest) bands, but their actual music is pretty simple, so I don't think of them in these discussions.

I love Christine

I'm not a huge fan of Gentle Giant, from what I remember it's a really trad prog rock band. The comparison with Can is better because both band tend to break a shitload of rules. While Can does it in an instinctive and organic way, King Crimson is a lot more... "intellectual" I guess. Fripp is really an impressive guitarist, musician and composer. He never does something out of the blue, there's always a concept/idea behind everything. I'd suggest In the Court and Red.
Here's one of Fripp's soli. He's not shredding like a poser, he's not bending like a crazy bluesman for "feels", he has a clear idea of what he wants to do and explores the possibilities as much as he can.

edit : @the Opeth guy above : You should try to listen to Screaming Headless Torsos, it's a crazy fusion band. The only person I ever met that knows that band is an Opeth fan (and a great person) :p.

Hendrix was a songwriter, composer, musician, singer and guitarist. People mention the guitarist because the audience has a strange fetish for 6-strings phallic instruments, but he became a legend because he was an incredibly well-rounded musician.

It's difficult to say who the greatest guitar player of all time is because there are many different aspects to playing guitar.

I've never heard anyone that expresses raw emotion so smoothly and flawlessly through a guitar better than Jimi Hendrix. He seems to be able to make an electric guitar sound exactly how he wants it to at any time. It's extraordinary.

But there are unknown hicks sitting on porches in the south that fingerpick 100x better than Hendrix ever was able to.

There is no single "greatest/most talented" band of all time, just like there is no single "greatest" guitarist, drummer, etc.

There is the fastest guitar player, the fastest drummer, etc.

There is your favorite guitar player, drummer, etc.

But there is no "greatest" because there is no criteria to measure them all to award such a title. It's just an opinion.

In the end, its all about the music. Everyone has different tastes, and at the end of the road, everyone poured their soul into what they created, and that resonated with us all.

They are actually right and ironically more objective than most
of you guys in this thread.. there is no absolute criterion of talent
unless you're comparing one band / artist to others by certain aspects.
So talent in general is definitely relative thing.. However thread is about
personal opinion and I think it's pointless to argue so I won't anymore.

Wowowow I didn't wanted to comment about "talent" because it doesn't makes much sense and just said Lynyrd Skynyrd because it's old and I wanted to feel special but now it's a fucking 'nam vets gathering.

Mr Bungle is a great band that experimented more than almost anybody else in the 90's. I almost feel like typing Earth because they pretty much broke every rules too around the same period but then somebody WILL listen to it and I'll have to deal with "omg it's garbage nothing happens bad musicians lol 3 riffs and i do an album too lololol".

Definitely King Crimson, for the same reasons Clebardman and Altairius pointed out, though I also agree that, being Fripp its only stable core, I would hardly consider them talented as a band, but more a collective of talented musicians. Same with any Zappa's ensemble.

Megadeth had fast guitar solos, that's about it. Metallica easily had the more creative compositions. Mustaine could never have written "Orion" or "One".

Considering thrash metal bands as among the most talented is just funny to me though.

Orion is pretty uninspired compared to your average prog instrumental.

...
What.

Orion is one of the few Metallica songs I dig, but I wouldn't call it inspired or creative compared to any single track out of RIP. "Mustaine could never have written X or Y" you know what ? That shit can be said about any artist than didn't wrote X or Y song, it's just a shallow argument. And if the only difference you hear between Friedman And Hammet is the speed, you need to change your speakers.

Lars and Kirk were the subjects of half the jokes in any music school I've been. The fact that Metallica is one of the best selling band, filling stadiums despite not being able to play two songs properly thanks to their drummer doesn't help.

I wasn't implying that, I just jumped in the conversation. I agree with you actually, but thrash does have some amazing artists, see Aspid (or "Аспид" to be precise) or Coroner for example.

What I meant by citing "My Last Words" is simply that each member of the band plays to the max with a dynamic that Metallica never showed, to me at least. In fact, while I consider AJFA an excellent album (to name the album where Metallica tried to prog too), Peace Sells and RIP are superior in everything for me. Heck, maybe even SFSGSW without counting the polarizing Sex Pistols cover.

I've talked too much about this though, I keep (kept?) both bands in high regard anyway.

I'll try to be useful for the topic:

What about Pat Metheny and Steve Lukather? I really love those guitarists.
