Ok so where did this concept come from? Ever since I got my first cell phone the only people that cared enough to text me constantly were females so I ended up getting used to spamming :P >_< :/ and ;). A few years later we upgraded to the modern smileys that the iphones made mainstream and people used them 1% less but they still used them a lot.

So why do people assume there's meaning behind a female saying: sure :) or a male saying: yeah ;) ?

For years I thought people said they took emojis seriously as a joke but recently I've cause a few misunderstandings using them and I'm starting to think people actually take them seriously.

Do you MAL people take emojis seriously? (example: person you like uses them when texting you)

They exist to convey emotional responses and feelings through text, so they're not useless by any means, unless you're on of those fucktools that spam them all the time like a retarded maniac. People that assume too much from them are probably people that assume too much if their crush gives them a polite smile or another positive gesture in the physical world as well.

I know that feelings make you do/think irrational stuff, but c'mon, ffs.

Of course not.
I only use emoji when I'm trying to sound polite, so I assume people use them for similar reasons.

I don't. :> Still see them as a joke.

Literally everything I send has an emoji in it. I hold myself back here on MAL.. >.> a bit.
I'm thinking that the reason is because I feel like it manages to express my mood or meaning to what I say..
e.g) "hey." is different than "hey. :>" or "hey :/"

Oh god no. If I send a message with a winkyface I'm almost always being sarcastic.

'My, my, my forward aren't we? ;)'

Means= Fuck off, who the fuck asks a girl you know from school, but just started taking to a few days back, whether they masturbate or not.

I use emojis pretty often when texting or instant messaging. Just a way to better show the emotion meant behind a message. Doesn't mean I got the hots for someone :P

I don't get it either. I find people looking over my shoulder often when I'm on the internet and emailing/messaging someone. A lot of them get the wrong idea because they don't get the context of the message/email. Quite annoying. I had it happen earlier this week and they thought I got a bae...They won't stop bothering me about it either cause most of my friends are like "AAIGPEIAJGPAOEIJGIOAJEG We thought you were gonna wait." I guess people just don't get it anymore and automatically associate it with hooking up.

I know right. They jump to conclusions really quickly. I use them quite often as well. Most of my friends who are gamers used them as well, so I understand them in a different context than my friends who do not game. :L Plus, the person I was emailing was quite a few years older than me, which made it really awkward when my friends were snooping and started yelling "YOU'VE GOT A BAE".

Talk about over-analyzing... I just think people use them when they have more casual conversations with you. If someone's flirting with you, through text, it's going to be blatantly obvious anyway even without emojis.

Perhaps gamers view and use emojis in a different way compared to non-gamers. Yea, I wish my friends calmed down. They're still trying to guess who "bae" is when I don't have one. No slack is given to me when it comes to stuff like this. They want to know so badly...

No, I don't think they can mean any special feelings. Some people are just accustomed to writing like that. :P

Or using ;) all the time when they don't have any flirtatious intentions or using :3 when they're not trying to act cute.

Ah I don't tend to use any unless I really strongly want to convey that I'm actually feeling a certain emotion at that point.
I don't really take them to mean anything other than "oh that person is trying to express they are happy/sad/mad/etc."

There is nothing special with emojis or emoticons. They just look better with texts and messages. Unless its a heart emoji, then you got a problem.

Not incredibly seriously. I'd understand a :p as someone sticking their tongue out at me or saying 'meh'. And maybe a winking face as a wink. But a lot of the time I think of a winking face as someone just being lazy.
