I just find it unusual that characters get all sentimental when they hear about their deceased or never seen relatives, usually parents. Is this normal in Jap or something?

"What could have been" is usually more powerful than "how it actually was."

bad sloppy writing, thats how .... also the japs have a big fixation on themes such as life and death , you can see that in almost all anime there are occurrences of this theme, it's part of there culture so i wouldn't be surprised if they do justice for a death reaction scene.

This basically. They all get "Why can't I have parents/brothers/sisters or whatever".
I'd say its actually pretty realistic.

Well, not affectionate. More obsessive.

I wasn't referring to any anime specifically, but if you want examples:
Garo
Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria
Somewhat HxH
Kill la Kill

It's generally that scene where the protagonist goes to defeat the villain and he does some illusion bullshit or starts spouting prospects of learning about their parents.

I find that bad writing. I can't imagine that I would get emotionally attached to someone I never met, even if that is a parent.
The Japanese culture might be different, but I don't think even they'll get attached to their deceased relatives if they never met that relative.

As sadpwner said, I'll talk a little about Garo, since it touches that subject(and that that's anime I know that does this).
Note: Don't read if you haven't seen the show.

I agree. How can you possibly be attached to someone you never met? On the other hand, feeling sentimental towards them is a whole other case..

@Romagia, far from Evangelion, or rather nothing like it. :)
(Tho it's been quite some time since I've seen it, so my memory is vague.)

@tanteiRE, I agree about the sentimental part, just not to be taken to any extreme. :D
