Ok so I was talking to a friend a few minutes ago and she made me think I don't know how to talk to guys my age. On MAL it's irrelevant since everyone here likes anime and or videogames.

But what do guys(NOT bffs) talk about IRL when video games and anime aren't possible subjects?

This is a real problem for me, I haven't had a close guy friend since 10th grade(I "stole" his crush) and I can hold my own in a conversation about women(meaning likes/dislikes and ex's) but after that.. I got nothing. I'm not into sports, I don't watch TV(except for South Park), I don't see the news and I can't flirt with them!

So... what IS Man Talk besides "omg diz bish has dem nice titties"?

With random guys you can just talk about anything relevant to the setting
ex. You are in school, talk about school stuff.
ex.2 You are at a party, talk about the party.
Try to make it relevant and not act off-putting.

With guy friends I actually talk about whatever. If somebody is my friend they know I'm odd enough that I've had legitimate, heated debates about things ranging from the power structure among my dogs to apocalypse survival.

I actually have no idea. Most of my friends were girls growing up.

When in doubt, talk sex.

I like to talk about politics, philosophy, relevant world news, music, history, science and fiction. I don't talk to men who only care about sterotypical man bullshit or whatever the arbitrary term "man talk" is supposed to include.

I imagine those first two are usually a no-go in most cases.

Music and fiction are good.

You can tack this on to what I said. Also, I talk about pretty much the same thing whether I'm talking to a guy or a girl, there doesn't necessarily have to be a difference in subject matter.

Music and fiction are good.

Indeed, the latter subjcts are more prevalent topics, but I don't mind too much. I love to talk about music and fiction.

I don't know, they usually say something, I go with that and build on it, whatever it is.
Yes, most people I talk to are really boring, so I don't bother much, it's always either: study, work, money, drugs, other people, gym, sport, food - one big circle of this.

What does "fiction" as a subject mean? What if's scenarios? Or stuff like Zombies and Aliens?

I'd go with books/tv/movies, just try to keep it relevant. If somebody is talking about something you don't know much about try to learn instead of just switching to a more comfortable topic. Most people love to talk and will gladly talk about their favorite book/show/movie if you give them a chance.

Usually we talk about stuff based on the what we're doing. For example if we're in school we'll talk about classes, grades, what colleges we want to go to, etc.

If I ever find myself in a position where there's nothing to talk about, I'll just ask him what he's been doing since I last time I saw him an 99% of the time a conversation starts from there.

I have a radical idea.

Why don't you try talking to them as individuals? You know, like, actually finding common ground and sparking a relationship based on mutual interests?

Talk to people. Not their gender. You won't get far with a generic list of "RIL' MAN" topics to checkmark and use as some sort of guide to interacting with people.

Be a person, not a robot.

keys

we talked about this just the other day

IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES, their person is not irrelevant to their gender, and some people just have difficult times around a gender they aren't comfortable with and/or used to. It's just fine for someone to ask how to talk to a certain gender.

You wouldn't get on to a straight boy for asking how to talk to girls would you?

That's nothing but sheer willful ignorance.

If you take into account somebody's gender above their individual personhood when trying to strike a conversation, not only is that socially inept and horribly sexist, but how do you even expect to hold a basic conversation that's something other than cliche superficial schlock?

IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES a dick doesn't determine your personality or interests. Unless of course you're a mindless driveling Neanderthal who's only sense of self-worth is the fact that you are able to conform to male gender stereotypes in order to please other people with the same set of ridiculous primitive arbitrary standards.

Talk about your past fun times with your friend. The past is always a good way to pretend nothing has changed and you still have the same interests.
I probably regret this post by now.
