H265 still suffers from blocking artifacts because its just an upgraded H264, by 2015 look out for Daala video codec its base on lapped transforms that will remove any blocking artifacts and that will be a game changer for the mean time

but ye the holy grail of video compression is still fractal video compression and computers right now cannot encode with it yet
I just did a quick google on Daala and well, i will be damned. Hopefully, by 2015 or 2016 we can see some real applications regarding Daala.

ye i hope Daala will be finished as soon as 2015 too, its backed by Mozilla and Google too

I'm sensitive on quality so I always get 1080p if possible, And 4TB should be enough for a year of anime series.

Stream 720, there's a lot of people who think they should use 1080p when they have 1600x900 resolution when that just takes up more card process rofl.

+1 My 16TB anime collection can attest to this.

HA 16 TB. im still using my 1TB (970GB) portable hdd for storing anime but i have to say i only keep anime that i really want to rewatch or rewatch like once a year.

i have a few anime on it that i just copy to my PC and delete after watching it. or put it on my usb stick and watch it on my tv :D

those ppl should get new screen asap cause watching 1080p source material on a native 1080p screen is the shit. especially with the right player, codec, renderer, filters and settings.

Aren't 1080p anime are upscales too?

Anyway, regarding the topic, i store all three types of those standard resolutions in my HDDs(2Tbx3 + 1Tb + 1Tb External). I usually try to get anime in its native resolution rather than upscales so that pretty much ruled out most of the 1080p upscaled anime in my storage.

always depends on the source but tons of anime blurays came with upscaled 720p or even lower resolutions which look abit better than the DVD release with help of some fancy filters.

i usually used this site to chek which resolution was used as source but the site is down for maintenance atm (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=101718)

those are really made for watching weekly episodes and deleting them right after. even the 1080p crunchyroll rips.

Am I missing something, but isn't upscales just making the resolution bigger without actually improving the quality? Upscaled 720p into 1080p is the same quality as 720p, no? What's the point even.

I download most encoded 720p as I prefer smaller sizes for download as I just delete them afterwards in anywY. Most don't even actually have good enough animation to watch on anything but 480p, lke btooom.

For faves I get best quality possible regardless of size.

Yes, if you have a decent computer there's no reason to download 1080p over 720p if it's not originally 1080p (BD rips).

But if your computer hardware is too bad it might be better to have the video pre-upscaled so it doesn't put the computer into the work of up-scaling it in real time by its own. And even then, it's uncommon that it will need to do that anyway. So most of the times downloading 1080p is pretty pointless even if you have shitty hardware that needs pre-upscaled video.

I also download encoded anime, as far as I can tell to my non-existent knowledge on the matter: there's no difference. I only stream ones that aren't even available in 720p/540p, it takes too long to load if they're larger.

Most of the time. Generally, those BDs are actually upscales themselves.

I just use Google Chrome's Developer Tools to directly download my anime. It's fast, the files are small (less than 100 mb per video) and they're in mp4 format most of the time so no need to convert it to watch on my iPod. I'm fine with any quality as long as it's not under 360p.

I mostly illegally download 720p torrents of the shows I'm watching. Both airing shows and w/e.

I avoid 1080p Downloads for TV Shows. Not only it takes long to download, but also requires tons of space. Totally not worth it. 720p still looks fantastic, even on 1080p screens.

Most if not all my TV Shows are downloaded in 720p format and Movies in 1080p. I only get 480p for older Anime.

Actually, if you try to play a 1080p file on a 720p screen, it looks a lot sharper except when you look at the outline of the characters, there seems to be jaggies. However, its quite pointless to have 1080p on a 720p screen since its not even displaying the proper pixels.

1080p are pointless generally in anime considering they are upscales when released as BDs. You wont gain any details in 1080p nor you will lose any quality in 720p of the same series.

Here, you are talking about downscaling(apparent aliasing and sharpness), which is the due to whatever media player you are using so that the image fit to the screen to be displayed properly.

i only stream when i cant find a certain anime, usually its 480p since smaller size means less waiting time, ocassionaly 720p. i rarely go for 1080p that usually when i cant find a smaller version. though ive started to delete as soon as i watch so i started getting 720p more frequently
I only read books i have already read

mostly 720p coz their aint much difference when it comes to anime most of the time tbh BUT I get 1080p for shows that matter and have a CLEAR differnce like Cowboy Bebop, Monogatari Series, Beserk, Hyouka, Kara no Kyoukai, Katanagatari, Hellsing Ultimate, Shingeki No Kyojin, Future Boy Conan etc etc

Anime movies I always go 1080p unless I got no choice but to go 4 720p.

Dont stream much unless its an old ass anime during the early 2000 and before and I cant find decent torrents for em.

I diont the quality as much as I used to now tho since I got sum nice ass enhancements with FFDSHOW

1080p if the download takes up low space or if I think it's worthy of the wait, but mostly 720p.

Some anime I can't find any HD though, like NHK.

I hoard every anime I watch. Used to be 480p off of Kissanime, until they stopped supporting it. Now it's mostly crappy 360p. The only times I download 720p is when the art and animation is exceptionally good, or if I want a dual audio of an anime with a good dub, which are usually in 720p or higher.
