So has anybody found any hidden gem anime ( preferably romance but it doesn't have to be) that you absolutely loved? They are usually anime that you have low expectations for, are kind of boring in the beginning, and usually not extremely popular that turn out to be amazing and blow your expectations out of the water.

-Nagi no Asukara: decided to watch this on a whim thinking it was just gonna be another cheesy school anime about like clubs or something but turned out to be my favorite anime of all time. The moment I saw the animation, drama, characters, and heard the soundtrack I was drawn into it. Absolutely amazing. I don't know why but the problems, situations, and characters in this anime got me really attached. It might seem seem like a cheerful anime at first, but trust me it gets into some deep shit that'll leave you in tears. But the ending couples weren't the ones I hoped for so it almost ruined the anime for me, but it was still great.

The World God Only Knows. The premise of the show led me to believe that it would be a typical harem where I don't care about the plot or characters at all. But somehow watching one guy win the hearts of girl after girl was very enjoyable. Not only does show poke at the troupes of the romcom genre, but I actually liked the structure of the story and got attached to quite a few of the characters. Each season got better than the last, and by the final season I became real fan of the show.

EDIT: just saw you dropped it lol. The first season was the worst one and you dropped it at a bad point. I would recommend picking it back up but not like marathoning it. Just watch in clumps of arcs and it gradually get better. It picks up halfway though the second season

Nagi is ridiculously popular.
I don't think it's a hidden gem at all.

Try
http://myanimelist.net/anime/4550/Hyakko
If you want a actual under-spoken and above-average title.

Vampire knight. I have no idea why, but i never see any1 recommend this show or talk about it. Its almost as underrated here imo as school days, but unlike school days no1 talks about this show. I think its like 5 years since second season came, and im still waiting for third (think manga is still ongoing, havent read it for while so not 100% sure though). There is no other show that isnt ongoing that id want to be continued as bad.

Nagi is popular but I get what the OP means. I saw this show in recommendations all the time but avoided it because it looked childish. When I watched the show it exceeded my expectations.

Then you guys have a weird definition of "hidden gem".
Nagi was highly anticipated, then was on the top of charts when aired and is still hyped these days.
Moreover, it's all a matter of personal opinion, so nevermind.

RD Sennou Chousashitsu - I don't think I understood even half about what was going on but I still really liked this one.

In a similar thread to this one someone recommended Hanada Shounen-shi, easily one of the best anime I've seen this summer.

Hori-san to Miyamura-kun is only two episodes long and is pretty cute :) I had zero expectations for a two episode romance but it was quite fantastic.

because the manga is much better

No one here is even mentioning obscure things

GunXSword is under appreciated
Dai-Guard is one of the most unique mecha series I've seen
Oban Star Racers is a masterpiece no one has watched
Yamato 2199 isn't praised nearly enough for the level of quality it has
Michiko & Hatchin is almost as good as Bebop/Champloo but no one knows about it. hell, it took 5 years to get dubbed
Symphogear and Symphogear G are so fun but it's hard to ever recommend them

Kokoro Connect. I went in with quite moderate expectations, the first 4 episodes weren't super exciting, but when it was all over it was my favourite anime. It's definitely a 'hidden' gem, it's way less watched than similar, lesser, anime.

Still is my favourite.

That one is less hidden gem and rather a well known masterpiece.

I wouldn't called it a hidden gem, but just another good anime that is you've never heard about. Here's another:

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Kanon
Asatte no Houkou
The most important things in life is the people that you care about

I'll second these suggestions:
RD Sennou Chousashitsu (and add Shirow's Ghost Hound as well)
Beast Player Erin
Asatte no Houkou

In the "shows I didn't think I'd like as much as I did" category I have
AKB0048
Chi's Sweet Home
Higepiyo
Mahou Shoujotai Arusu

In the "shows that deserve more attention" category
Noein
Dennou Coil
"Goblin Cat"/Mononoke
Mouryou no Hako
Aoi Bungaku
Otona Joshi no Anime Time
Oh! Edo Rocket
Tsuritama
Shion no Ou
Nijuu Mensou no Musume
