Synopsis

The series focuses on Neuro Nougami, a demon who feeds on mysteries and puzzles, who comes to the human world to feast on the mysteries offered by humans who release negative energy from their planned crimes. As a demon, he must not make his presence noticed by the humans as it is the law in the human world. Because of this, he makes a permanent deal with Yako Katsuragi (who has her own personal mystery she has to solve), and together they solve crimes for Neuro's appetite.

Story:
Basically a demon detective, Neuro, comes to the human world from hell and teams up with a girl, Yako, whose father was murdered. Basically the story is then done is a mostly episodic manner, that is every episodes, sometimes every 2-3 episodes, are a new case. But as you progress through the cases and the episodes, you witness a lot of growth with Yako and in the end the mystery of her father's death is obviously resolved. The cases aren't really always that great and are usually pretty easy in terms of solving and predicting, but there's some nice ones, and either way, the cases read more

Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro... perhaps one of the weirder animes I've seen. However, this anime hit my taste buds right on! Honestly, I'm a big fan of detective fictions, main characters that are seen as intelligent, and overall weird motifs and this anime is PERFECT for you if you agree with any of the above.

Story:
Overall, the story is enjoyable, and not one second was disappointing. The plot was nothing too intense, so those of you looking for drama might think this is faulty. The plot definitely pretty mild compared to other animes such as Death Note, or Code Geass, but the main idea for read more

I can't see why people would think this show is bad at all.

It's animated by the same studio that did Death Note, it's incredibly unique, and it's fun to watch.

The manga volumes I have read are incredibly random, but incredibly entertaining and genius, and although the Anime is quite dumbed down and rearranged, there have been no fillers; Although the story has been changed quite a bit.

The show has sadly been one of the series to not be subbed regularly, I was glad when catchphrase picked it up and they did it well, but then they slowed down. Now I'm watching Ainex's releases and they read more

**Some Spoilers but not enough to ruin the show***

This anime is a very interesting one. To properly watch this anime and enjoy it, one needs to start at around episode 5 skip 6 then continue to episode 7 on, and probably skip episode 15 as well. Nothing will be missed since this anime has a different mystery every episode.

The show is set up in a very Scooby-Doo mystery like fashion. You only meet around two or three characters per episode and the first person you meet is always the villain. However, the show is somewhat dark in the aspect that someone is always killed. read more

Recommendations

Kuroshitsuji is about a demon butler, Sebastian, while Majin Tantei is about a demon detective, Neuro. Slightly different, but very similar characters. The shows both contain a similar atmosphere as well.
The central characters in both of these anime are a detective (albeit forced in MTTN's case) and his/her supernatural slightly creepy "assistant" with unusual abilities. Both assistant characters seem to have a kind of hunger for solving mysteries, though not literal hunger in Un-Go's case. Both anime are episodic mystery stories with a twisted premise. MTTN has an active element of (dark) humor though while Un-Go appears to be more serious.

right off, i'd have to say that ghost hunt is the better of the two [even though majin hasn't finished airing yet].. but both are episodic series with mysteries being solved.. a young high school girl with no family follows around a mysterious sempai-mystery-solver.. um.. there isn't a whole lot as far as character development goes in either of the series.. majin has more bizarre [and shocking] humor while ghost hunt sticks to the paranormal shockers without the laughs.. both involve the supernatural-majin's main character is a demon with really strange mystery-solving methods.. while ghost hunt focuses on the religious or spiritual methods of ghost hunting [ghost, monster, poltergeist, psychokinetic hunting].. anyways, i wasn't a huge fan of either, but methinks if you liked one you might enjoy the other..
Same Animation Studio, OP by same band, deals with the supernatural, overall both are excellent series.
There be a demon in Neuro. There be a girl from hell in Hell Girl. This is MAL--RECOMMENDATION TIME!

Neuro is your typical detective series reliant on episodic clue-gathering, followed by the big reveal at the end. Hell Girl isn't, but its episodic unravelling-reasons-for-hatred, followed by punishment being dished out at the end, does make the two rather similar. Getting something new each episode makes them highly watchable; easy to pick-up without having to remember details.

Neuro's lighthearted Shounen Jump vibe allowed for a more forgiving attitude when dealing with one-dimensional 'black & white' characters (can only do so much inside 20 minutes!), but in the case of Hell Girl it often wasn't as good as it could be due to its more moody, mature direction not meshing with its simplistic characterisation. So, while Hell Girl improved in its sequel series with lengthier two-episode arcing - allowing for a less clear divide between good & bad - Neuro was generally at its best when its silliness wasn't put under a magnifying glass with lengthy arcs.
Both anime deals with unorthodox detective work and of course, demons and other mythological facts. Although Neuro is a bit darkish in tone compared to Loki, both will satisfy any detective-themed anime fan's delight. ^__^
