The King all the way.

I mean I love Hisoka, but the King's development & the end of the Chimera Ant arc was fantastic.

In a way yes, and I happen to like Pitou more than Meruem (as I ranked him before Meruem in my first post in this thread)

If I were to say what my problems with Meruem were. It's that

A/ He barely had any effect on the plot or the main characters. He was there for that arc, and nothing else, and that's problem with creating a villain for one arc only. It's not connected, much like the CA arc as a whole in relevance to the arcs before it.

B/ I couldn't help but feel when he had his talk with Netero, that his development doesn't feel really geniune, like his development seemed forced and exaggerated. From him to go from that cold personality, to a more humanized one, so shortly, and because of one reason only. It makes realize, that he doesn't have his own personality, he was merely influenced heavily by Komugi.

My personal preferences in antagonist (aside from the standard qualities of a good antagonist, like interesting multidimensionals personalities, charismatic, compelling, strong presence, etc) lies in ones that have huge impact on the plot, and the main characters. Lasting effect on the main characters. Their introduction and connection to the plot feels natural, they carry a theme that was already present in the manga, and they enhance it, they matter in the grand scheme of things. Stuff along those lines, and Meruem doesn't fall into that, hence why I'm not that crazy over him, while others in other HxH arcs, fall into one or two of them. He just didn't click with me, I like him to some level and think he is a good character, but maybe the overpraise of his character made my expectations of his character really high.

I apologize. I had actually read your post at the beginning of the thread already, but I forgot about it. x.x;

While I don't agree that Meruem's character development felt forced, I do agree that he may not have had much of a personality to speak of, in the sense that he had so little life experience and therefore didn't have any time to "become" who he "really was". That may be partly why Komugi influenced him so easily. His personality just wasn't set in stone. (Then again, that's assuming he did change. I personally don't think he ever regretted his actions.)

He may still be relevant in relation to Kite, and through Kite, Gon. It is true that he's rather disconnected from the main characters at this point, though. Hopefully something will tie him to them more strongly down the road.

Yeah, but it was based on his observation of Komugi, she didn't spoonfeed him his new point of view. So I disagree about the lack of personality.

So yeah, Meruem is my favorite, Genthru is the worst, he served his purpose and wasn't bad but he wasn't good either.

Agreed.

Anyway, gotta vote for my boy Meruem even though Hisoka isn't far behind.

Also, Gyro should be on here soon enough. His flashback alone makes him out to be such a promising villain, I wish they'd actually introduce him.

I voted for the Phantom Troupe, mostly for Machi, Nobunaga and Pakunoda.

Neferpitou is also one of my favourites, and while I don't exactly like him, I thought Pouf was entertaining.

Calling Pariston a scumbag. >:(

Ehh the word 'antagonist' kind of slipped me when I said that. ^^; An antagonist of the election arc sure, although Hisoka and Illumi are way more so than he is. For now (anime and manga) he's certainly not a villain.

Hisoka and Illumi are the most prominent ones so far, I like them, the cripples aren't on the list, how come?

Aren't the Zoldycks villains too?
Also Hanzo was an antagonist at some point....

He screwed over Netero to essentially ensure he'd die against Meruem, all while securing votes for the inevitable upcoming election. I think that qualifies for villain-hood.

Personally, Pitou was best girl for me during the Chimera Ant arc, since Youpi was boring as shit, Meruem was really only playing games with Komugi most of the time anyway, and Pouf was just shits and giggles for fujoshi.

Hisoka is more of the occasional psychopathic sexual predator than a villian, Illumi's just plain fucked up, the Phantom Troupe really just wants to have fun, Chrollo is in the desert chilling out with lizards or something, Genthru was just there to add tension for the Greed Island arc, and Pariston is best described as a piece of trash so...

I'd say the most enjoyable ones for me by far are Pitou, Hisoka and Pariston, though Pitou's the only actual villian out of all three.

The Phantom Troupe as a whole for me. Easily the most interesting bunch. Chrollo didn't really do much apart from the Troupe. Illumi also hasn't done much up till the most recent episode.
Pariston has also made quite an impression in the few episodes he's shown up, and little has to be said for Hisoka.
Genthru was the most boring, and I would actually put Razor as the antagonist for that arc.

So: PT > Hisoka > Meruem = Pariston > Illumi > RGs > Genthru

Meruem, by far the most developed and deep character i've ever seen in any anime.
Also, he has the best fight i ever seen in my whole life, That animation,Soundtrack,Writting,Ending and Twist send shivers down my spine all the time( If u think there's a better fight than this one, u are more than welcome to post a reply or amv, i always enjoy watching good fights, don't do it here though, i don't want this thread to become a Flame war)

Hisoka is Top 2, gotta love his unpredctability, quirks and orgarms.

Top 3 goes to Chrollo, such an intriguing character, just thinking about his possibilities gets me excited.

Also, all of the villains( specially the Top 3) Have amazing design, VAs, development,Skills, and overall are the best i ever seen in any anime, HxH has by far the most interesting and intriguing characters in a shounen.

The conversation starts at 16:30. Morel couldn't get the hunters with necessary abilities to help him because the vice-chairman (Pariston) only gave jobs to the ones who agreed to vote for him in the election. Netero wanted to fight Meruem alone so he would die regardless of Pariston's involvement. But had he made it out of the mission alive he would have been blamed for the civilian casualties.

Also perhaps it's worth to mention that Netero knew about Pariston's doing. He chose him as vice-chairman because he wanted challenges and Pariston was very good at his job. We'll get to know more about Netero and Pariston as this arc goes on. I don't really consider him a villain. yet.

I like pretty much all of them. This is the only anime where i've liked the villains so much and even rooted for them in some cases. I voted for royal guards since I really enjoyed pouf's development. Phantom troupe were more interesting as a group than the ants for me but i think individually the ants got more development and were more fun to analyse.
Really hoping the troupe and chrollo make a comeback soon.

Also I think its pretty good how in hxh there is no concrete villain. You can say Hisoka's bad but he's helped Gon out a few times. And during the chimera ant arc Gon himself turned into a fairly terrible person.

That's true. Villains change all the time and many times in the series the viewers see sides of the villain that evoke empathy. It is not a novel characterization, and still doesn't redeem characters of their villainous qualities, but it does make them more understandable.

I think the phantom troupe are a good example of this. Kurapika's enemy, the cruel and ruthless band of thieves, ended up displaying their more human side in their camaraderie and loyalty to Chrollo. (Best seen through Pakunoda in her sacrifice, imo.) Chimera ants are a good example of this too, esp. since we see many of them wavering between ant and human, the good and evil of both species.

i still don't understand the love for Hisoka. He acts like a gay clown. I dislike male characters who look, act and sound like a female in anime. The only clown I can take seriously is the Joker and that's because he acts different from how he looks.
On-topic. I pick Meruem, the royal guards and then chrollo.

He's a psychopath. Acting gay =/= acting and sounding female.

And he's doesn't even seem full-blown gay, I personally like him because he's such a weirdo.

The Joker was actually one of my first impressions of Hisoka. While there is a clear difference, I think the characters are equally good. (I'll throw in that the Joker was my favorite villain before I started watching anime...)

OT: No one in particular. Meruem is interesting, but I find his circumstances to be more interesting than his character. Pariston, Hisoka, and Illumi are entertaining but not favorites. Chrollo seems exceptionally bland so far (badass, but bland). Pakunoda > Chrollo.

RGs are good as a group, but once again, I wouldn't call them as favorites. If I had to go with someone, I'd choose Pouf.

The Joker is good (most of them are), but Hisoka is better simply because he is a more lunatic anarchist, and is a far more interesting personality.

My favorite take on the joker is probably the Live action Nolan one with Ledger.
