I thought they cleared the game last season, since they are playing a new game shouldn't they call it something else?

I understand that in season one, they had two arcs because

1) They want to clear the game and live
2) To save Asuna

Now what is the purpose of the story? To continue playing games?

Well SAO is the catalyst of all the shitstorms (both in the story and in the anime industry) so they didn't need to change the name

Because changing your popular 30k per volume selling show's name is fucking stupid?

Also the light novel series is called Sword Art Online. The chapters have names though.

The title is the series name, not based on the game. Your logic is basically saying that we should change the name of a series every time a new arc starts.

Most series aren't usually named after the first arc to begin with.

Very true. Looking at it in a different perspective, sword arts are still a very prominent concept in the series in GGO, ALO, and especially the current arc of the light novel. Seeing that Kirito uses these sword arts in virtual reality, it still can be justified to continue calling the series Sword Art Online. Also, Reki did state that the title is for consistency's sake. The volume titles tell what arc the series is in anyways.

Same reason with Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu and Seitokai no Ichizon.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

Your question is as same as why the second arc wasn't "Alfheim Online" instead of "Sword Art Online"

Because SAO doesn't stand for sword art online in this case, it stands for sinon ass online.

I didn't come up with it, but I wish I did. Seriously, there's at least one nice, well drawn, slow-panning ass shot per episode.

how I wish that was the actual truth
Season 1 wouldn't have been such a miserable experience for me if it indeed had been more about Sinon Ass Online right from the very start.

Cause the author had no idea what he was doing, he made a story (SAO arc) to appeal to prepubescent kids and saw it was selling so he made more crap stories but forgot to change the title

i dunno, branding? it's why 'dragon ball kai' was renamed to 'dragon ball z kai' in the west. recognisability = sales.

It was a web novel series that was running for 7 years before it got officially published. Reki kept the title in future arcs before his series even went mainstream since there was no need to. It'd be confusing to keep changing a series title just because the game changed. All the reader needs to do is just read the volume title to know which game/arc the story is about.

The first 2 books are not named SAO but Aincrad.

All games are based on SAO. whether they were a copy(ALO) or based of the seed(GGO, underworld etc.).

Also the MC will allways be playing with swords.

Marketing.

Simple as that. The SAO brand is famous and they would want to carry on that fame as much as possible. If you still name yourself SAO 2 then everyone will know that this is the sequel to SAO.

It's not. The producers wanted to do 2 arcs, and ALO is weakly related to SAO.

Most series aren't usually named after the first arc to begin with.

That's because the first arc isn't called "Sword Art Online" but "Aincrad". The second arc is called Fairy Dance. The third arc is Phantom Bullet. The arcs are never named after the games they play. It's just the fandom decided to call the arcs based on the games featured in the arc... Even though the arcs have their own proper names.

I'd say, the reason why the entire series is called "Sword Art Online" is because SAO is the game that started everything. All the arcs following Aincrad are somehow connected to SAO (the game) in some ways.
