Do you mind the presence of the occassional troll thread?

First thread since achieving modship. Whee~
============
Well, one thing I've been wondering since modship is the presence of troll threads.
You know the ones. They present a silly topic that quickly devolves into chatting and derailing. And then suddenly there's a stack of reports in the queue.

Anyway, it seems some of them "accidentally" turn into actual discussion topics, which is quite strange when you know the OPs intention. But enough of that.

I wanna poll MAL on their opinion of troll threads.
Do you mind that there's troll threads around the forums? Do you sometimes post in them for fun?

And probably the controversial question: Do you think forums would be boring without their existence?

Depends if it's a good troll thread. Some of them are quite entertaining.

Do you have any examples?

You don't have to link, just make up a title.

Depends on your definition of a troll thread. Most times they are wastes of space such as:

Do you love cheese? that thread would be pointless spam.

but maybe a thread titled, I'm a racist and thats ok, regardless of the obvious OP's attempt at baiting might eventually turn into a serious discussion.

I suppose it all comes down to just how little meat the topic the troll picks has on its bones to go the distance. A simple one is pointless but something with enough relevance might become something good.

Didn't know mods were allowed to make threads e.e

No I hate them, since they are filled with unfunny quote towers and similar garbage. Shit posting is rarely funny. Anyone who does that can have my eternal hate, unless they somehow are funny and not redundant.

I do find them interesting at first and pretty funny. But when people start taking them too seriously(and after a few days) especially when the OP is active and is just stringing them along, that's when it gets annoying.

So they get boring fast.

I'm not sure either. It's a burning question that I'm willing to get shot for.

And on that note, what kind of serious thread do you like? Paragraph types or small talk discussions?

Why does this sound less like a thread and more like a questionnaire for MAL forum restructure.

Sometimes they can be entertaining and have potential for some discussion, but things like "I just killed a person, what do I do?" are just silly and not subtle at all.

It depends on the maturity of the troll, mainly. But even with the bad ones taken into account, I don't mind them overall. As long as there's SOME structure to the discussion taking place in the thread.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this, but it helps in prioritizing reports. Fixing a troll thread that 90% of MAL enjoys vs cleaning a discussion thread, for example.

In that case the most important issue is knowing when to fix a listing thread. Can't tell you how many times Ive seen a good emerging discussion cut down before its time because it was called a listing thread, even when people had begun actively discussing in thread.

It's only when people actually take them too seriously that they are annoying.

Only thing that gets me is when troll threads are paragraphs because of the time wasted.

I honestly prefer more detailed threads, but then you get poopy posts like "lol tl;dr"

Light discussion is usually the best. Long paragraph discussion/arguments can be fun once in a while. The problem of these troll threads is that they are filled with redundant unfunny uncreative crap and one liners. It's just boring and somewhat annoying to read the same jokes about boku no pico, inferno cops and the likes or the same edgy sarcastic humor. I get a strong urge to post ''you are not fucking funny'' in big bold letters when I see it.

Well since it's suppose to be casual discussion no, though they make it more interesting sometimes.

I'll keep this in mind, thanks. Lately we've been trying to restructure listing threads to preserve discussion. You're free to send me or another mod a pm if you have a concern.

And with that derail *cough* squared away, which would you prefer, Kibura? Cleaning a discussion or removing a troll thread?

I think the replies themselves are most entertaining. Then again, it depends how creative the OP can be.

So I suppose I'm indifferent because replies are always entertaining, depending on the topic at hand.

That was a potential derailment? more like an off branch of the same topic.

As for your question, not sure why my opinions actually matter but removing a troll thread is better than cleaning one if thats what you mean. Troll threads add nothing to a discussion but roundabouts of pointless posting and will (usually) never go beyond that anyway.

My favourite kind of threads. They're the most fun thing this place usually has to offer.

Sadly, they're usually of poor quality, so it's not easy to squeeze some good fun out of them. And plenty of people aren't really willing to make them fun by just going along with it, either.

I prefer the harmless kind, i.e. not the ones that are supposed to instigate autistic arguments about One Piece or simply piss off a specific group of people for no reason.

I do think this place would be more fun if troll threads were allowed - the harmless ones, at least. Like the waifu stuff Feels used to make or the one I made with the dogs. It's called Casual Discussion after all, so being too uptight about rules doesn't seem necessary to me.

Tangents aren't/weren't allowed in threads that I've seen moderated. (if another moderator sees this, correct me if I'm wrong)

In that case, I'm a fairly big fan of /DUMB/ threads.

I dont like /TROLL/ threads.

For example:

Dumb Thread: Have you ever slipped on a Banana Peel? What did it feel like?

Troll thread: Why do people still watch battle shounen this shit is trash?

Your responses are fucking spinning me out. I think I died a little inside.

OT: Depends on the troll thread. Or just the thread in general. There are threads that violate no rules that shouldn't exist and there are threads removed for violations that have genuine discussion or at least humorous good natured discussion in them. Unfortunately common sense seems to not be part of the act of moderation on MAL.

I don't mind them too much, as long as they don't derail into chat threads that turn into people making fun of each other. Also I don't think they would be boring without them, since that would imply having actual discussion is boring in general, which is not true at all.

People seem confused as to what actual discussion is.

You don't have to be contemplating deep philosophical meanings and/or writing poetry to be having an actual discussion.

It should be like a votekick system. If enough members deem something as a troll thread then it gets hidden for the mods to sort through.

That's probably a horrible idea but hey I'm contributing.

No matter how I slice it it just can't be any sort of voting/rating system based on MAL users. It would skew so wildly in either direction for no particular reason that nothing would make sense and from what I can gather consistency is something the new rules and whatnot have been trying to improve.

Nah keep it to a rating system. Those with low ratings deemed boring or lacking effort and those with high ratings entertaining and provoking discussion. Then mods can delete based on ratings. Also if you're looking for a good troll thread you won't have to go through all of them.

I could see it happening if we had a few set users designated as "mini-mods" that would hide things but that's about it, and that's unnecessary considering we have mods.

Well hopefully the new mods have that common sense.
They were at least picked because they knew the forums and what was somewhat acceptable within our community.
So I guess it might turn out just fine.
