I don't get it, it doesn't increase your running speed as a matter of fact it does the opposite if you think about it. Is it some lame weird Japanese thing or a cheap way for animators to avoid animating pumping arms in normal running form.

You don't even know that? they are running so fast that it would take too much strength to pull their arms ahead of their body.

only their legs are strong.

They don't need their arms just like they rarely need their legs when they only leap off one tree branch in a 1000 acre forest while engaging in thoughtful dialogues for 5 minutes before landing on the next one.

If ninjas thought the same way they would never had learn how to run on walls, soar in the air, become invisible, control animals, fire and other elements and perform other trivial techniques

Isn't Naruto the only anime where this happens?
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

I have seen that in Bleach too and I could only come up with two explanations:

- cheaper to animate
- preventing them to trip over their oversized swords / injure themselves while running

In elementary school, I watched Naruto and seriously believed it would increase my running speed... I told that to a friend and in P.E. we'd always run like ninjas and feel awesome

Because they want their arms at position where they can draw their weapons immediately if things are to happen.

Kinda like Itachi always hiding his arms under his coat

Sonic does it as well. I have a friend who runs like this IRL. He's not fast though. Mainly just an idiot.

I've seen it in more than a few anime and I've always wondered who the hell runs like that in real life?!

Well...my seven year old son does. And it looks kinda natural to be honest.

Maybe it's something common in old Japanese movies with samurais and ninjas.

People who are saying that it makes you more 'aerodynamic' or faster I don't think that's true. Running like that is stupid it creates more drag, shortens your stride, makes it harder to breathe and will cause back and neck pain.

If it what your saying was true wouldn't Olympic sprinters use it in the 100m sprint. I think the proper sprinting form generates the most speed.

No, it's because it's considered cheating. A couple of guys back in 76 tried it, they won too easily.

Because nerds who haven't run a day in their lives think it looks cool.

I've always thought it was lame as hell.
