If you want to be taken seriously you'll need a ball gag shaped like your favorite loli's head.

I'm not really a fan of the term.

I don't really understand why people feel they need to be a "fan" of something. I watch and listen to what I like. It's as simple as that. Saying that I'm a fan of something seems like a commitment of a kind. And a commitment is a burden.

Regardless of how much I like something, when I'm asked whether I'm a fan of it, I say no.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

To become an otaku, one must stick out his or hers left foot, balance a glass of chocolate on one's head, and sing the Bikini Bottom's National Anthem.

otaku means obsession so if your obsess with anime already like buying a lot of anime products instead of buying necessities then you can call yourself an otaku

1) A collection of creepy sex-toys and a ton of "Waifu Body-Pillows"
2) An obsession with games
3) Must be a hikkikomori
4) Must know at least 4 guys online who pretend to be girls for attention.
5) Must have an account on Osu
6) Must Love Touhou
7) Must Jerk it 4 times a day at least
8) Must be at least 220 lbs

Seriously though, being an "Otaku" when referring to anime would lead someone like me to assume you at least own some merchandise, and have seen a large number of anime. However, there aren't set requirements.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

You just have to like something to the point of loss of social interaction (internet doesn't count). It doesn't necessarily involve liking anime or games etc to be an otaku. For instance you could be a guitar otaku.

If you completely shut yourself from the real world and are totally immersed by what you do, you're an otaku.

(The term is not just limited to anime btw.)

Does it really matter? The "hate" against dakimakuras is based on preconceptions, but in reality they are actually great as pillows... So I would recommend you to get one ;)

It is very subjective word like nerd or geek.

If a 16 years old girl in Japan said '' I'm ani-ota(anime otaku)'' , I would bet she just watch evening airing anime such as One piece, Naruto,Magi,Kuroko no basket,Gintama,Nintama rantaro, and some super famous late night anime such as Shingeki no Kyojin or Free.

When TV show say this is documentary on anime otaku, then they are most likely heavy anime obsessed people who watch many late night anime and buy DVDs, waifu dakimakura and so on.

But I personally think most prevalent usage of anime-otaku is to reffer to someone who watch late night anime regularly especially ones which cast cute girls.
For examples Toaru Kagaku no railgun or Lucky Star or K-on or Haruhi or Bake monogatari.

Well...

So most of the time, I watch 50%+ of vry season's anime (which I still need to get listed x.x) and lots of manga.

My friend doesn't read manga, watches recommended anime only, and has a dakimakura he calls waifu.

Who is the otaku?

If you wanna be the very best
Like no one ever was
To watch them is your real test
To live them is your cause
You must travel across the land
Searching far and wide
Each anime, to understand
The power that's inside
Otakon! It's you and only you
I know that your friends are few
Otakon!
Oh, its your best friend
In a life which you misspend
Otakon! A heart so true
Your obsession will leave you blue
You teach me and i'll teach you
Otakon!
Gotta watch 'em all
Every challenge along the way
With courage you must face
You must struggle everyday
To live at your parent's place
Come with me, the time is right
There's no better team
Arm and arm, we'll watch Vampire Knight
It's always been our dream.
Otakon! It's you and now also me
I know it's my destiny
Otakon!
Oh, you're my best friend
In a world which is plagued by the slice of life trend
Otakon! A heart so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and i'll teach you
Otakon!
Gotta watch 'em all
