I was a pirate from a fairly young age, and as such, I got a lot of video games. I got a Naruto game for the Wii, liked it, looked it up on the internet and found the series. Same with Bleach. Played the Wii game, looked it up online, then found it. It wasn't until I tried to find series like this that I found Death Note, which is when I finally realized exactly what anime was, and I was hooked.

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the 23rd of March, 2013 and I was desperatly waiting for the release of the video game BioShock: Infinite because I'm a huge fan of the franchise and I pre-ordered the Ultimate Songbird Edition (biggest Collector's Edition) of the game. At the weekend before the launch (26th of March) I was staying at a friend's house, having a sleepover. He's a big otaku and I was never really into anime (except for Pokémon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and all that shows we watched when we were kids). I had nothing else to do I decided to watch an anime he owns on my laptop. He had stuff like Ikki Tousen, an OVA of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, some Ghibli movies or Vampire Knight and some others. But he also recently bought the DVD set of "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". I wasn't convinced at first as he has a big wallscroll of Madoka Magica and it looked not really appealing to me. But then I decided to watch it - as I didn't have anything to do anyway - and marathoned the whole thing on my own, covered in a blanket, with quality earphones for the best quality (took around 5 hours to finish the show). I couldn't believe what I just watched. I had freaking tears in my eyes, but it was just a "cartoon". I was blown away by the story, the characters, the art style and the fantastic OST. I got shivers down my spine everytime the ED theme "Magia" played at the end of an episode. Then I said to myself "That's it - anime is fucking awesome. Why did I start just yet? WHY?! That otaku friend gave me the show on my HDD then and on the next days I watched it again and my impressions where the same. I love that show with all of my heart. The next week I got the game I told you about and I was disappointed by it. It was not bad but a huge let down compared to the first two games. The best thing about the game was that I watched Madoka Magica and got into anime and the worst thing that I spent 150 bucks for the Collector's Edition. Seriously. -Based on a true story-

Well I grew up with Hamtaro and Pokemon but it wasn't until 7th I looked into anime. I remember one day while having lunch with my friends my one friend had a small book with a really colorful cover. I asked what she was reading and explained that it was manga and that her and our other friend had spent the whole weekend together watching the anime version and reading the manga. My group of friends then was really small (including myself there were only four of us) and our other friend who was just as clueless as I was said she would look into it so I decided to too. The series was Shugo Chara and when I saw the anime I was kinda taken aback a bit since it was so shojo and I'm not very girly at all. I started the series anyways so I could talk about it with my friends but decided to watch another series because this was a whole section of the internet I was unfamiliar with. I chose Fairy Tail and I loved it. ...and that's how it all started~

Hello, and welcome to Mal :) . How I got into anime (quoted from my intro thread): Weakamon said: When I wasn't that interested in anime, I always thought that all anime are like Naruto. You see, Naruto was pretty much, The Thing here at my place back then. Everyone was always talking about it. . In fact, I even watched (but not consistently) the pre-Shippuden series, but it started to become a bit... repetitive, or I don't know how to say it. Years passed by and out of boredom, I decided to watch a random anime. As the credits of the last episode rolled by, I was in pure ecstasy. I never thought an anime would impact me in such a way that after finishing the series, I didn't know what do with my life anymore... It was Code Geass. This anime here, inspired me to look for more anime that are of equal or even better value.

I grew up watching Pokemon, DBZ, and Yu-Gi-Oh. Back then I knew about anime but I was reluctant to go farther into it because of the rumors and general dislike towards it by most people. I started watching anime/reading manga seriously between my junior and senior year of high school. I got bored one day and was feeling nostalgic thinking about the shows I watched when I was younger. I then remembered that I watched this "pirate cartoon" for a little while and tried to remember what it was. So I refound One Piece and blew through it. I then moved on to Bleach and Naruto. From there I started reading manga and finding new anime to watch. My favorite anime is probably Cowboy Bebop and my favorite manga is probably Hajime no Ippo.

Well I watched Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ, and Yu-Gi-Oh like many people, but what really got me into Anime was actually manga. When the DB/DBZ manga started coming out in the US, I was one of the first people to go out and buy it. Going to bookstores and buying the Dragon Ball Manga made me a fan of manga and I started buying a bunch of other manga'. This led me to discover fan translations and Anime online. I watched Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note when they first came out this way.

Well I did get into anime by watching Pokemon and my older brother used to like the shows on Toonami. I didn't even know it was anime back then. I guess Naruto was when I first started consciously watching anime when I was around 10 or so and Code Geass and Death Note were shows that helped heighten my interest in anime. Sooner or later Clannad and Haruhi Suzumiya came along and introduced to the SOL genre of shows I never thought would be. Oh dear, so long ago.

Pokemon and dragonball z were the ones, my older brother and I would watch episodes daily but we always assumed they were cartoons. After a few years we both stopped, and then there was a period of time where I thought anime and manga was kinda weird, the people around me would laugh and say it was 'kids stuff', in fact it's true that anime is socially frowned upon and it gets worse the older you get. Anyway, when I was 16 my bestfriend and I were watching j horror films and then we saw the title 'spirited away' with a Japanese director. My friend said that she remembered 'it was scary' but we had no idea it was an anime. We had so much fun watching the movie, there was so much imagination and I'd never seen anything like it, I was really happy. My friend never pursued anime but it had made a grand impression on me, I did a little research and I really liked the premise of Deathnote so I watched it. Needless to say it was just mind blowing, from the beggining I was hooked and it really made me realise that 'no, anime is not just for kids' and that 'anime is its own serious genre'. Nowadays I don't watch daytime telivision or evening sitcoms, I prefer anime series' because there much more exciting, anything can happen in an anime series it lacks constrainments that comes with actors or the laws of physics and that's why I love it. I do keep my anime watching to myself, its something that's private to me and helps me unwind, people often tend to judge or roll their eyes if it's mentioned but then again that their own ignorance. That's basically my story on animeee, I bet you liked my deep and emotional journey of discovery hehe :')

I never really considered anime as a viable source of entertainment; usually I played a decent amount of video games to pass time. Earlier this year, I was trying to find good movies to watch, and ended up rewatching Spirited Away, since its one I watched when I was quite young, and did not remember much of it at all. Anyways, I was reminded of why I used to love it so much, and thus began my search for similar media. I'm not really sure what it was, but I was poking around the internet some and decided to look up "best animes" to find something similar to Spirited Away. After about 5 minutes of searching for something of interest, I decided upon Clannad, and began watching it that night. I made it through the first 8 episodes (Fuuko arc) in one night, and never have I been more suprised in my life. Nothing could have prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster over the four nights I spent watching the series and After Story. Anyways, Clannad was the first anime series I completed, as well as the first piece of media to ever make me fall in love with the characters and cry my heart out, and thus it forever holds that special place in me. After that, my journey into the world of anime deepened as I searched for other Clannad-esque series. So there you have it: my story of discovery!

Hi and welcome to MAL This is my story So this one time a long time ago when I was about 12 (I'm 17 now) I used to be a normal kid who had never heard of anime, I think I watched a bit of naruto or one piece on cartoon network but that was as far as it went. Anyway I got into a really nerdy group of friends because I was very into heavy metal music at the time and they were the only group that shared my tastes. So this one guy introduces me to anime when we are playing magic the gathering, (yeah I was that kind of nerd) and he's like, 'dude I watch so much anime watch it with me' so I'm like, OK. Next thing I know I'm watching love hina or some other ridiculous ecchi and laughing my head off, so I go home and Google anime, first result: death note. Hey that seems cool, I'll watch it, next minute I'm hooked, I kept watching for a while and now we are here, after watching my first anime though I was a very different person, I think that every time I watch a series I learn something about life and about myself, I think that if I never met Matthew Miller and he never introduced me to anime I would be a very different person, anime has changed me for the better though, and for this I am thankful. If you made it this far then thank you, you deserve an anime related prize but I can't think of any, komene.

It's always been on TV. I started with German dubs of 80s and 70s shows when I was little, then continued with Fox Kids and Kids WB, then Toonami, Tech TV and Adult Swim. I watched a few downloaded subbed anime and movies on premium cable in between. In 2008 I was in a new place with nothing to do, so I started downloading and watching as many anime as I could stomach. They gave me a new appreciation. That continued as a habit for two years. Then I lost interest for a while, and now I'm taking it slowly again.

There was this hentai... Jk. I started it from manga. Before I knew manga, I was mostly reading comics (tintin, smurfs, excalibur, The Trigan Empire, etc.), then I got hooked with What's Michael. Then I tried some other Japanese comics, and I can't stop. Back then I began to realized two mainstream group of comics, the west and the east, and the middle between (mostly Hong Kong comics). Since there's only a few of genre of western comics that got imported to my country, I began to shift my attention to Japanese and Hong Kong comics. One of my favorite HK comics is Old Master Q (wow, I just found out it was listed in MAL!). And then sometimes around the 90's they began airing anime on TV. I got hooked up since I already read the manga. Imagine yourself as a child seeing your favorite manga character actually speak! Man, that was euphoric. Like winning a lottery for a one year worth of free ice cream. I love ice cream. Anyway, I still find difficulties in listing my manga, since all of my manga collection has been packed in a box rotting somewhere, and some other has been given as charity to a local library long time ago, half-voluntarily, since my mother just grab it all away.

Started watching Pokemon again many years later before getting bored, found episodes of Full Moon wo Sagashite and watched half of the first episode. Few years later once again, try to find Full Moon wo Sagashite again as couldn't remember its name but end up browsing anime forums and watching Clannad to spark it all off. |
