So on the top 5 anime of MAL right now, which do you think is most deserving of its position and why? Also what anime, for detailed reasons, do you believe does not belong there?

Well, personally I found Steins gate to be the best of the top 5 by a large margin.

As to why.. Probably because I found the characters, specifically Makise and Okabe, very interesting.

That, and the fact that I felt it had easily the most interesting story of the top 5. I found the changes that were made and then had to be unmade extremely interesting, as well as the various sacrifices that had to be made equally interesting. To much detail would be to much spoiling though really.

As for least deserving.. Easily LotGH(Inb4 I get jumped by everyone)

Im sorry, but for one thing its the only one of those 5 I have been unable to complete. I just dont care. I dont like any characters but yang, and he cant carry a 110 episode show entirely on his own.

The story is in no way better than any 'decent' scifi show or book I have come across, and believe me when I say I have seen a few and read a LOT more. Tis just a standard politcal military sci fi. Meh? Ill try finishing it again one day, but the 40 episodes ive watched simply did nothing at all for me.

So yea, characters I found totally uninteresting, a story that I felt was in absolutely no way above standard sci fi levels, art that I do not like at all, and sound that did absolutely nothing for me either.

As far as I am concerned, the only reason its so popular is that it is one of the very few shows I have come across that really deals with large scale space warfare with any level of competency, but thats again, not enough to make it as popular as it is.

So shoot me?

Are you trying to beat the record of pointless threads? You're quickly catching up to Lupadim lol
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Believe me, this thread is going to get heated quite easily with all the FANaticS we have on MAL.

Yep, discussing what you think of the highest ranking anime on an anime website on that websites forum is CLEARLY pointless. (Hint: The point is that some of us actually enjoy discussing anime as opposed to... whatever it is you enjoy?)

Don't worry, he doesnt!

LoGH is in the top 5. So LoGH it is. FMA Brotherhood is good but I wouldn't put it in a top 5. I haven't watched Gintama, so I can't tell. I haven't seen Clannad After Story, but I've seen the beginning of Clannad which was very similar to LB that is nearer to a the worst 5 than the top 50 in my opinion, so I really have low expectations on Clannad After Story, and chances are high I would never watch it considering how I despice the first episodes of the prequel. I also tried to watch Steins;Gate but I fell asleep because nothing was happening, and the character weren't interesting enough for me.

So yeah, LoGH.

LOGH any day of the week.

Least Deserving Steins;Gate, not that it was bad, but FMA and Gintama are better and Clannad AS is more relevant for its genre than Steins;Gate is, imo.
I probably regret this post by now.

deserves its place
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - has an amazing an engaging plot, the best cast of characters ive seen on any anime so far, some epic death scenes an probably the best episode ive seen yet, dat ep 82

Steins gate - has a very good cast of characters an the second half is very engaging, the soundtrack is great, the animation very good animation... i cant find much flaws on this one

neutral
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - it s a very good anime but the start is rushed an uninteresting, im not talking about a couple of eps but like 10 of them, imo enough to not be deserving of its place but after that i loved so i can see it being in the top 5

doesnt deserve its place
Gintama' - 50 episodes with 0 plot progression (except for a lame cameo of the main villain at the very end, probably as a reminder that he still alive), some boring "serious" arcs (the Elizabeth arc is imo the worst gintama arc yet), to make matters worse the jokes werent even funny an Gintama doesnt have much else going for it

Clannad: After Story
only liked about 5 eps, around ep 16-20, the rest was meh an the ending man that was terrible

When was Gintama about plot-progression? The series was always about the comedy, and that season had the best comedy (and animation) in the whole series). If you want plot-progression continue Enchousen, since you dropped it just before an arc with some major events and plot-progression.

He hates the characters, so there's not much point in him continuing watching the latest season, anyway. It's mind-boggling how these people can sit through nearly 300 episodes of a show that they hate.

All of them are out of place, except for clannad. The top 5 should obviously be:

1 - Clannad
2 - Clannad: AS
3 - One Piece
4 - Kaiji
5 - Trigun

Anyone who thinks I am wrong is wrong.

Now seriously: GTFO Gintama.

Forgot it exists.

Ok, instead of Trigun, can be Hunter x Hunter.

But HxH 2011 is decaying so much. This, or maybe my mind changed after watching Clannad and I start to expect too much from anime.

i was expecting some sort of response from some gintama fans, anyways i dont remember saying that i hate all the characters, i like Kamui (even though he hasnt done anything amazing so far), Katsura an a few more... i do hate some like Kagura an particularly Shinpachi who is one of the most f*cking annoying characters ive had the misfortune of encountering, how i got there? 1 episode a week isnt much is it? its not something id do again though an i dont care about completing it even if theres only a few eps left since im sure that theres going to be more Gintama soon

I'm pretty sure you already made this topic before, meh.

They are all shit as in they doesn't deserve to be that high. It's beyond me why any of them are this high especially FMA:B and Gintama. Initially I was okay and I can understand why Gintama is loved. The comedy is getting better and the characters are great especially Gin-san but the more I watch the more I notice that the stories are so fucking terrible, I'm talking about those little story arcs that come once in a while. They feel like they were some stories that was rejected by Shounen Jump and the author of Gintama just mixed them up and added comedy to them, so generic, cliche and predictable. I'm gonna go ahead and skip the next ''serious'' arc, Gintama shines in their everyday funny episodes.

Steins gate: Kurisu does not deserve 7117 favorites.

LOGH: I guess it is there because some people made troll accounts to up vote it. It's ranked high in the first place because of how MAL rating system works and because it's just doesn't look appealing to so many people in so many levels. No wonder it only has 29,871 members.

Clannad: AS: Mediocre shit.

I think Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Clannad After Story, and Steins;Gate all deserve to be top 5.

As for the order, I believe Steins;Gate should be number 1, Brotherhood number 5, and After Story as number 2. That's just how I would rank them.

I can't comment on the other 2 because I haven't seen them, but I think Gintama is probably overrated from what I've heard, and the little I have seen.

1. FMA Brotherhood: Well written for what it is but still nothing exceptional. 2003 is better.
2. Gintama': Haven't seen it
3. Steins;Gate: Fun but very flawed. Least deserving of its spot from what I've seen
4. Clannad AS: Most deserving of its spot from what I've seen but still overrated. Kanon is better
5. LOGH: Haven't seen it, probably overrated

So my vote goes for Clannad AS

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is probably the only justified one. FMA: Brotherhood is really good, but number 1? Come on.... All of the other shows in the top 5 definitely do not deserve the spot (except Gintama, I'm not sure what to think of it). But, based on a large consensus of tastes, some may deserve higher spots.

FMA:B is a fantastic show to be sure, but wouldn't say it's worth #1, top 10 is definitely justified at least.

I've only seen about a third of Gintama's first season so I can't say much for the episodes that far in but as far as I understand it only gets better so it probably deserves to be pretty high, however for what is almost purely a comedy to be #2 seems very overkill to me.

Steins is probably the most deserved one of the top 5, it's such a perfect story that you can't really dislike it, also the characters are amazing.

After Story's not really what I would call objectively amazing, however the emotional impact towards the end is so insane that it'll always be what you think of first when it comes to series of its kind.

Have not seen Ginga but if it's true that it's the Star Wars of anime, then it probably should be quite high up there.

Rough rearrangment would from my perspective would prob be like this, but I can't really say if LotGH should be higher or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it should.

1. Steins;Gate
2. Clannad: AS
3. FMA:B
4. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu
5. Gintama'

Honestly, I think that it really depends on what you enjoy, but being who I am, I would say that FMA: Brotherhood and LotGH deserve to be in the top five (Even though I am a huge fan of Steins;Gate).

FMA: Brotherhood has such a well crafted story with so many emotions floating around it. There's heavy moral themes, relations to dehumanization, strong characters, a very deep plot, and more twists that a fucking curly fry. It's a very well-rounded anime that holds: Comedy, Action, Drama, Psychological Influence, Supernatural, and Fantasy as a few of its most prominent genres, and it represents them well.

LotGH Is a well-crafted anime with brilliant characters, depth, and an ingenious plot-line. I would recommend this anime to almost anyone (Given that I assumed they'd try it), and I think that it definitely deserves the spot it's at.

Alright, time for the others.

Steins;Gate is one of my all-time favorite anime, but it is more of a top 15 anime in my mind. It has quite a slow start, and a few plot holes that kind of tear it apart, so I'd like to see it bumped down at least a little bit.

Clannad: After Story I've never really been a fan of the Clannad series, for it tended to just lump a bunch of mix-and-matched plot devices together into a "drama" in an attempt to attract many different fans. Leading to people like me disliking it on the basis that the writing cam across as rushed, poorly thought-through, and full of ass-pulls. In Clannad: After Story, the only real thing they do is try to cover up these detrimental writing flaws with a tearjerking story. I would rather see this in the 150-200 spot than anything else, but that's just my two cents.

Gintama' is not my kind of humor at all. It's redundant, dry, and requires way too much cultural understanding to get through. I'd prefer to see something like DMC in it's place. That may just be me though.

Yeah, that's about it.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

The only thing more pathetic than quoting someone you know nothing about, is quoting yourself.
