This.

I can't stand how some companies are so insistent on making their characters look super-realistic. I really don't want to see Solid Snake's pores, thanks.

just my opinion but i think making the characters look super-realistic is a way of trying to sell it. i know heaps of people who would buy a game on the basis of , it looks good. so yeah =/ pretty dumb reason to buy a game though.

Eh, I hate when games go half way realistic than forced full.

I can understand people liking Eternal Sonata and Star Ocean 4's character design, but I think it doesn't look good and didn't even target their primary audience for the first (in ES' situation) system they were on.

Really graphics depend on the game i am playing, FPS's i pretty much expect some good eye candy. RPG's tho, only thing i expect is that they use the engine they are using well for the environments, spells, action's, ETC. I still expect the graphics to look decent looking, but if they use the engine well, i can forgive the graphics as long as they aren't too horrible..

To me, I can't play a game that I personally think the graphics or art is shit. It just doesn't work to me. I'm just ignorant that way.

Graphics...depends on the game. I mean, if it's final fantasy, I expect above average graphics XD
I'd rather have art or character portraits than really BAD 'my eyes burn!' graphics.

Games with bad graphics aren't that bad, as long as the gameplay doesn't suck. But still, graphics do affect the game a bit.
Zetsubou Shi- I'm in despair~ Me being such a horrible fan in a world filled with so many anime and cool japanese internet meme-things, not to mention games, ect. has left me in despair!~

..bad graphic is not a bad thing much
i think valkrie profile lenneth was kinda simple ..and look not good in my eyes
-minus the awesome cutscene that's different

but the battle system is kinda nice and challenging

oh well ..i still choose gameplay over graphic

Graphics are pretty low on my "what should be good list"

Gameplay is much more important. Music is a major plus as well, same goes for sound.
Still today I much prefer those oldies that are blocky, Legend of Legaia for example, or better yet Ocarina of Time.
Viruta Fighter is a good example of 'good' graphics at the cost of the other points.

I consider gameplay the most important, because it really does determine the enjoyment of the game itself. Graphics as well as Plot, are merely additional bonuses to a game's content.

RPG's are somewhat of an exception only because of the heavy use of flashy lights and expression in dramatic dialogue. That's when graphics and plot really do matter (especially if you're trying to take drama via text seriously).

Graphics are the thing I least worry about in a game.
there are sertain limits but the gameplay and sound matters far more to me.

No offense but its people like you that are whats wrong with the gaming world now. All the new gamers care about now is how pretty the game looks, even if the gameplay sucks total ass

seriously, Graphics are BONUS at most, Graphics are nice sure but once you start to sacrifice gameplay and story for how pretty it looks, is when games start to fail big time. its amazing how many old SNES games i can go back and play and not give a shit about how "bad" it looks

And people like you are what's really wrong with the gaming world.

What happened with games that offered good graphics, concept and gameplay? Everything is just as important to me, and so far I haven't noticed any signals from the gaming industry that it's impossible to have good graphics, concept and gameplay at the same time. We're paying the industry fucktons for their games, I at least expect decency on all aspects.

I dare you to find numbers indicating that the majority of the gamers only want graphics for a game. I heard this argument more than enough now, and I have never heard the opposite. In fact, this shit has been going on for so long that I can now hardly believe that this is true.

You say so many awesome things.

Also, graphics does not automatically equal "new flashier and higher resolution ect." to me. One of the good things about even a game like Chrono Trigger was it's graphics. It had good character designs and whatnot, heck the original artwork for the game, and the in game graphics, are MUCH better than all these silly new cutscenes they added in.

Good graphics ALSO helped games like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country 2, Final Fantasy VI, and Seiken Densetsu III be good games.

The Donkey Kong country series was notable for it's progression in Super Nintendo graphics. It was made to look 3D while not being a 3D game. Chrono Trigger had good character designs, flawless palettes, and well, pretty much what I would consider optimal usage of the Super Nintendo graphics system.

Super Mario RPG was another one of those games that was made to look 3D while not actually being quite in the realm of 3D graphics like Star Fox. It was a brilliant thing to look at.

Seiken Densetsu III, had lots of moe. And generally sleeker and plusher of designs than any of the other Secret of Mana games before it.

Without these graphics, they wouldn't be the same games.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.

I've enjoyed games with about as bad graphics as you can get. The only time graphics matter for me is in adventure/rpg games. When you have to explore a game world, it would be nice if it wasn't boring.

Woah hold on there cowboy, I been playing games since Coleco Vision, so I'm no where new. I still think Coleco Vision looks good "FOR IT'S TIME" I have nothing against old systems, I hate people who say "O the SNES had bad graphics", Actually no it had great graphics back in the day, thats all they could do back then. I also understand the need to sacrifice graphics for game length and size. But I hate when Developers slack off and make obvious lazy graphics. Take WoW for instance, WoW is just LAZY, PERIOD. Don't try to tell me "Oh cause it's so big" No that not the case, Just look at Lineage 2 AMAZING designs and graphics and it's older then WoW and it's twice as big. I study Computer Animation in College so I can get into the video game industry, I know all the tricks of the trade, so let me rephrase my self, Game Play is not an excuse to be Lazy with graphics. Although Graphics come secondary to Game play there should be no excuse for them not looking good.

personally i have high expectations for current gen graphics but because i grew up on the old school games graphics isn't everything, i love playing chrono trigger even with its garbage graphics its still one of the best games ever, but like if a game is released of the 360 or PS3 personally i expect the graphics to be great with all the potential they have, especially with the 60$ price tag on games, however i will never buy a game because of grpahics alone but i will consider getting a game because of its gameplay...

Graphics are important but priority-wise we like games for playing them. Now if anything, art direction and the connection to the rest of game is what I do if I ever judge graphics.

Look at Katamari Damacy, at first glance the game has simple graphics often said to be made in the "Saturn/PS1" era. That is part of its art direction and IMO I think that's half its charm. If it had realistic graphics would people still pick it up?

Okami is another example. Taking the art style in Japanese mythology, Clover recreated a feel that matches the game perfectly. Thus adding to the game's already excellent quality.

Gameplay is still above presentation but it does help games depending on them.

Though I would put gameplay as a higher priority to the overall enjoyment of a game, the presentation is just as important to the experience, if not morso to a game that prides itself on superb art direction (PoP, Okami, VanillaWare titles).

The kicker though is that most games that look like garbage for their time don't play so hot either, so I always find these discussions useless in the long run.
