The part with Marlow getting beaten up by the soldiers was the only anime original stuff in this episode. Oh, and Annie's brief dream at the start wasn't shown this early in the manga.

That's WIT studios for you mate. They do a very good job with anime original content, IMO. Isayama must have supervised it very closely.

Don't really see why Annie would be a ''great villain''. How the hell can you even say she's a good villain if we don't know any of her motives yet?

By emotions she produces in me. There are many kinds of villains. Pure evil, motivated villains, good guys turned bad etc. And than there are these kinds of villains whose motivations you don't know but simply feel angry at the villain for what he has done, whether it was some evil deed, killing a person you liked or something else.

Annie falls in the last category. I don't know why she wanted to take Eren, maybe so they could live happy titan life somewhere far in the forest with small titan children all around. Maybe to take him to others (my guess is there are more of human titans around). I don't know any of that.
What I do know is she killed humans in most gruesome of ways, splattering them, toying with them (did you see how she swinged poor guy around after catching his rope?). She was brutal, ruthless.
And than we come to the part with Levi's squad. Petra was first shown few seconds after Hange and Levi, immediately establishing her as one of the characters.

Besides Mikasa almost no other female character got any development up to that point. Sasha was comedic relief, Annie was coldblooded bitch (as was proven later) and only Petra was down to ground character people could actually like and she was far from useless in a fight.
And then she got crushed to the tree by Annie.
As well as the rest of the team.
I mentioned Petra especially since people liked her way more than anyone else that died up to this point in the show.

So not only did she betray humanity (she may be titan, but she acted human up to that point), she didn't even have any remorse doing it. Those tears after failing to capture Eren weren't for humans, I'm sure of that.
She enjoyed killing them, that is why I hate her.

And that's what makes her great villain, we don't know her motives, but she did things. No words, no threats, actual deeds. She killed liked characters, she massacred unknown characters in gruesome way. She was made to be hated. And she fulfills that role perfectly.

Poor Marlo

Suspicions on Annie being a Titan has always been obvious before,
but I didn't think she was one this episode
Until she stopped at the entrance of the underground

Annie had some nice screen time indeed
The one getting out of Annie's hand is suspicious as well now
It was a very nice setup for the coming 2 finales

Marco's blade, man, or specifically 3D maneuver gear. It's Armin deductions. Go back to the scene between Annie and Armin exchanged of words on the staircase. I think next episode will detail about Armin's findings through the Recon Corps' officers.

What the FUCK it finally happened. Thanks to google images I knew it was her around ep 12 or so, which pissed me off so much. But omg dat FACE. I was shocked, terrified and turned on all at the same time. The build up didn't make it that obvious it was her, but from the very first scene of her waking up it was clear what was about to happen. I do like the ambush though, i think the whole last scene played out very well. Still, the face and her laugh shocked the hell out of me. Damn

The hell if I know what "r34" is referring to - probably some 4chan rubbish - but Shingeki's anime has been sexualised to pander more to males from very near the beginning. Mikasa having sparkly eyes was the first warning, which was swiftly followed by military girls with sixpacks, at a bootcamp, making sure to wear glossy lipstick--the killer blow. The manga art leaves little room for 'kawaii~!' bullshit to appeal to otaku (Mikasa's pupils are black; empty), so the anime team compromised by making the females into bishoujos.

As for the laugh, the only reactions to it I've seen have been the 'WTF!?' variety due to how out of character and place it was and the "kawaii~!" kind that generates sales because Annie looks turned on/like she's one of those people that can have random orgasms in normal situations. Thus, it failed unless the intent was to get people in lust with Annie to buy the discs. A poor imitation of DN's highest/lowest point.

Haha. pretty interesting analysis you got there. To be fair, there's nothing wrong with the girls being pretty, else they'd be more plain than they already are. Alot of the guys are handsome, so going out of their way to make plain or ugly girls doesn't make any sense. I thought that SnK would make all those uptight social justice people happy that there aren't any sexualized chicks, but if pretty hair and nice eyes is bad then that's just nitpicking surely, unless you're kidding. If you're not, fair enough.

And 'r34' is 'rule 34', so while its conception had something to do with 4chan it's its own thing. I'm sure you can look it up ;)

Although real talk, the fact that I'm even defending the girls in Snk proves that i was right by saying 'this is how it starts' :p

I really like her character. Gosh, her laugh tough. It made me cringe, i got scared a bit. :o

I think eren cares for annie after all. The way he reacted while annie was being attacked by others.

I feel that

Her evil grin before she went to bite herself was what I was expecting initially. Her laugh threw me off because it didn't really fit the situation or the character, it was about as far out of left field as it can get. Maybe she's bipolar? But there have been literally no signs of that being the case. It looked pretty uncomfortable... that might be what they were going for though

In the manga she didn't laught like that, she do a joker grin and open her eyes wide before she get swarmed by the Recon Corp. I too think is was out of place, it's not like Annie to laugh like that.

I think that was the whole point. She's been found out, her plans are exposed, and there's nothing she can do to convince herself otherwise. Because of that she snaps, and honestly the laugh threw me off. The joker grin in the manga is also completely out of her character because she never once smiled in the anime before. I don't see how a laugh is any different. It was supposed to throw the viewer off-guard and I think it managed to do that well.

Apparently there is again quite a bit of anime original content in this episode?
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Actually, I think her reaction was way more unique. I mean really, if she did a maniacal laugh and tilted her head back everybody'd be saying that Attack on Titan just did a typical bad guy laugh and criticize AoT as being generic for no reason. You're probably thinking that it wouldn't happen, but people already nitpick a lot with Attack on Titan despite how unique it's been so far; someone here told me the girls are sexualized cause they're pretty :p So to be fair, whilst the laugh was weird, perverse and unexpected, it was also symbolic: it was shocking, out of the blue, out of character. Annie being the female titan and having fooled them all shows that there's a lot of this character that we don't understand. I mean, think of how out of place her saying that she's scared of dark places cause she's a 'weak girl'; she'd already given off this impression that she's unstable and/or psychotic and finally discovering her secret and seeing that laugh is the summit of all of her actions. Also, her very predatory like face before she tried to transform was quite menacing and out of character, seemed almost titan-like. I do understand that people didn't like it cause it wasn't like the manga and it seemed 'out of character' for Annie herself. But tbh we know next to nothing about Annie, her background or her purpose. And considering all she's done, a weird perverted laugh is the least disturbing thing she's done. That's what I think anyway.

What I find telling - assuming your translation of what was said is legit - is that he DIDN'T go with Annie laughing after considering it. He's fine with his second option getting the light of day in an adaptation of his work (no doubt more so due to the director + Kira's laugh) but he obviously didn't think it looked right to have not gone with it. *shrug*

For the record, I always thought how Annie was drawn when she showed her fangs/smirked looked... off. So, with the above in mind, that probably means the author struggled with Annie's face in that scene. BUT, given how her character has/d always been depicted (even during the stair scene right before; when she said she was afraid but kept a straight face), showing as little emotion as possible is what fit her character. I would've been okish if her 'all bets are off' face had been the one with the crazed laughter... intsead, we got sparkly eyes, flushed cheeks and the sunlight highlighting THAT FUCKING LIPSTICK. It was like seeing a clusterfuck of 'NOES', all at once.

And, no: never did I say a woman being sexy is a bad thing. It's an unrealistic thing for every female in a fictional military that takes itself seriously to be wank-worthy, but that wasn't the fucking point. The point was that sex sells and the anime relied on this whilst the manga didn't. If it was just the eyes showing more emotion, fine, but it was always hard to shrug off that girls/women set on turning their bodies into weapons to fight wars against giants would wake up and apply make-up before getting into push-ups and whatever. PLEASE!
