I was talking about this with a friend a few weeks ago and we had a really great discussion about it. I wrote a blog post concerning my own choices (feel free to comment!) and I was wondering if any of you would like to share your own experiences. I know this happens to everyone. A show suddenly turning good after you were considering stopping. What were some shows like that for you guys?

Juuni Kokki. First eps are so bad, Youko is a whiny little bitch you just want to cuntpunch, but damn does it have a turnaround. And she becomes epic. Just gotta get through the first arc really.

This happened to me sooo many times.

The most notable time was when I was watching School Rumble (gasp). I liked it allot in the beginning, but at either the 5th or 6th episode I started to lose faith. After realizing that I had nothing else to do for the rest of the night however, I forced myself to continue watching whic ultimately led to me loving the show.

NOTE: I am a legitimate (meaning usually on-topic and polite) hit-and-run poster. Do not expect me to reply to your reply to my reply.

The first few episodes of School Rumble bored the hell out of me. It just seemed...a bit dry & average at best. I wouldn't have kept going if I wasn't constantly prodded to do so. But as SR is one of my favorite series, I turned out to be very grateful for said prodding.

i think it was like this in one piece.

the first episode, this childish character design and so on, but then i watched on and thought that this series must be good, because so many people love it. and then i was suddenly addicted to it :]

Blood+. It's so insanely boring for the first 20 episodes, but somewhere around Diva's introduction, the show became....awesome. Yeah, 20 episodes is a bit long to get a series going, but it's a great second half without a doubt.

I watched one episode, I thnk it was episode 12 of Eureka Seven.
Bad Idea to start with episode 12 instead of 1 XD
So I dropped it...
...and 1/2 Year later I watched the whole 50 Episodes - that was an great anime.
One of my favorites.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. It starts out good enough, but really dips in quality until episode 15, when it becomes fucking awesome.
Excel Saga. I made the mistake of watching it dubbed the first time and almost ended up dropping it because I couldn't take her voice any more.

I had that with D.Gray-man. The first 50 episodes aren't that interesting, but after that it's just great ! Too bad the series stopped at a crucial point in the story.

Doesn't happen to me much - I hate wasting my free time, so I drop pretty fast (learned to do this after way too many shows that did not improve). But it has happened a couple of times:
Baccano - the first two or three episodes weren't my thing at all, but I ended up kind of liking it.
NANA - the first episode was awesome. The Hachi backstory episodes were really painful (boring) for me to watch. But I knew they'd be over eventually so I stuck it out and now I rather like it. Hachi improves, but she was pretty irritating in the flashbacks. I'll read the manga when I decide that I can face the backstory part again.

TTGL, I've actually dropped the series twice, once at episode 2 then at 10, then watching it now. Pretty good, not sure why I stopped watching it back then.

Akane iro-ni Somaru Saka - Boring, got a bit better near the end at least.

Kurogane no Linebarrels - Started out Ok, but I stopped watching at first episode for weeks then continuing and now I've catched up but seriously considered not doing it.

GTO - HATED the animation watched half the episode, then someone convinced me it was damn good so I stuck with the animation and fell in love with it pretty fast.

H20 - Boooring, barely worth watching the full series, if it was more than 13 episodes I'd definently drop it.

Tower of Druaga - Generic, but it was ok at least.

Probably more but I can't remember

Wow, I made a post that was very similar to this once. I called it insanely boring too. But I loved the rest of the show so I'm glad I didn't drop it.

other ones that I almost dropped but ending up liking were Code Geass, Clannad, Kanon, H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~, Jigoku Shoujo, Kagihime Monogatari Eikyuu Alice Rinbukyoku, Kaikan Phrase, Rozen Maiden and xxxholic

Word for word that is how I felt. Strange how that works. I used to hate the first arc, but when I re-watched it I enjoyed it the second time around. I sure am glad I stuck with it too, because it turned out to be among the greatest series in existence.

Hokuto no Ken - The 1st few episodes weren't all that impressive to me, but the awesomeness of Hokuto Shin-Ken caught on quickly
Welcome to the NHK - I initially wasn't into it, but once I resaw the first episode, I started to like it.
Yakitate!! Japan - The first ep to me was boring. If I wasn't with an anime club that made it their "to watch" series for the semester, I probably wouldn't have even made it to the 2nd episode. The 2nd episode TOTALLY made up for it.

Kinda did this with Seto no Hanayome. Watched the first episode(which WAS lame, not going to lie). Had the series on-hold for an eternity and I just recently picked it back up. It's been a lot better than I thought it would be after watching the first ep.

This happens to me a lot, as I'm generally quick to judge a series and ditch it if it isn't entertaining me. Luckily I have friends to straighten me out sometimes, as I would never have kept up with One Piece (which went on to become my favorite anime), Juuni Kokuki, School Rumble or Azumanga, and quite a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX... where to begin... XD

I watched the first season in a week or so, and while it was really addictive to watch, it just wasn't very good. After hearing a bit about the new characters in season two (Edo and Saiou), I liked the sound of them, so I gave it another chance and watched through the second season. This part was a bit better overall, and I did really like Edo's story, but it still only a mediocre show overall, and ended up on my On Hold list for a loooong time. After about six months, I decided I love Yu-Gi-Oh enough to give GX one last chance. So I started watching season three. And I am so glad I did. Seasons three and four were amazing. Like, almost as good as DM. <3 (Save the last two episodes, but that's another story.)

tl;dr: GX was lame, then it was mediocre, then it was awesome and now it's my third favorite series. X3

I vowed never to drop a series, but I have really felt like it a couple of times.
Those that I nearly dropped but I actually ended up liking...
Rozen Maiden - the first two episodes had me wtf'ing, since I was like "this is a kids show, seriously wtf is this shit". But then, I kept watching, and got into it, and it became pretty damn entertaining.
Escaflowne - I watched the first episode and left it for ages, putting it off. I eventually came back to it and the series ended up being pretty good.
Tenjou Tenge - Also put it off at like ep 7 for ages. I came back to it, and it ended up being ok. Wasn't brilliant, but still reasonably entertaining.

I can think of a few.

Twelve Kingdoms (Junni Kouki)- Like someone else said before, Yoko is a whiny little *insert bad word here* at the beginning. I felt a little bit naseous and quickly dropped the series. Then after my friend almost disowned me I picked it up again and suddenly after a few episodes it became so stupidly awesome. Now it is one of my all-time favorite series. I've seen it three times and own the DVD's and the light novels. Yay for me.

Android Ana Maico 2010- It was just so BORING the first few episodes. People kept calling it a comedy, but I begged to differ. A few days ago when I was sick I randomly decided to watch it and out of nowhere it became funny, charming almost. I think it won my heart with the gay studio hijacker waving a gun around and screaming, "Take me to Beruit!" Hehe. Good times.

.Hack//Signs- Same as above, it was so boring. I mean that series is basically all dialogue. Even the backgrounds are relatively the same. Then the second time I gave it a try and I ended up marathoning it in one day. It takes some patience, but I still love that series. Still haven't seen Roots though.

Honey and Clover- Hagu freaked me out. She looked like a kid, and since Takemoto fell in love with her I thought that the anime was advocating child porn or something equally retarded. Which is depressing since I have the same unfortunate problem of looking younger then my age. I've learned from my stupidity.

I would have to say... Shugo Chara.
At the beginning I was like "oh, it's super girly with no original points and a generic "be yourself 'cause that's the best~!" theme." Then I kept watching and found all the love triangles and hte corssdressing and now i just love it. <3 It's still got the cuteness it had at the beginning, but it's mroe intersting now. Not that I partictularly like the main character, but there are enough other characters I do love that I watch it.

Lucky Star - I watched the first episode... and stopped for a week. And then I watched the whole of it..

Death Note - I thought it sucks. The first scene is so boring (in the Shinigami world) so I said to myself that I will never waste my time on that. Some weeks after, when I got bored, I played it... and wow...

I can think only think of two right now:

Sola ~ In the beginning I actually fell asleep after each episode (not kidding :P), but after things started to pick up it became more interesting. The ending was still...okay.

School Rumble ~ This was really boring until they introduced more characters. Which took about 5 episodes? It's something like that and if it wasn't for my brother who really enjoyed this series I probably would have dropped it.

It was very calm at first and and felt like a supernatural slice of life for the first 13 episodes or so, but then it got serious with wars, problems of being a ruler, dark pasts, differences between genders and so forth

It didn't happen to me often. When I decide to drop a series I never gave it a second chance, ever. But when it did I find it very refreshing. One such series was Innocent Venus. I was about to drop the show at 6 when...well a great twist happened, and the series just finished decently. :D This stuff is quite sobering. :)

Azumanga Diaoh.

Oh God I am happy I gave it another chance. Funny story behind it. I was ordering anime online and I accidentally put Azumanga Daioh on my shopping cart (I'm still not sure how, an act of god maybe?) and bought it, and when all my anime came in the mail I saw it and was like "What the hell, I didn't order this - guess I'll watch it anyway since I paid for it though".. Turns out to be one of my favorite animes of all time.
I'm back.
