Amazing one hour special. The case much more complicated this time around. The details were insane.

I had a hunch that the killer was

Just an amazing episode. The story was great. The coded music sheets were great. I loved it.

What about the end of the episode....

For me though, most of the criminals is easily predicted, haven't gotten one wrong yet, but its how the crime happened I haven't been able to guess all right. But its ONLY episode 11, so I'm sure I got one I can't predict coming sooner or later.

Thanks little detective!

This episode was really good.. Strange that she would send off for a detective just to be caught by them... Seems she didn't really want to go through with what she was doing.. Mabe I should be saying he? :x

Nobody knows who a Japanese person named Kevin is.

An interesting case, wasn't that elaborate but I did like it. And the killer was unexpected and had a nice twist, though the ending was cheesy.

Case File #11
The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case

Important Milestone:
  • First time

  • First 1-hour episode of the series.
This was a pretty special episode for a couple of reasons:
1. In the rerun version aired in 2003, Gosho Aoyama makes a guest appearance at the beginning to talk about the case. He notes that this episode was one of his favorites because the use of Moonlight Sonata in the manga is much more effective here in anime form where we could actually listen to the song.
2. As stated above, this is the first and possibly the only time
(not counting the non-canonical movies) because Conan states so in the closing credits of the rerun; whether if this has happened since 2003, however, I cannot confirm.

I remember loving this episode a lot back then because of that tragic ending. It was so memorable that it made me fall in love with Beethoven's song. The way the melancholic Sonata plays away at the tragic scene... it was haunting, yet mesmerizing. The emotional stuff aside, this mystery was very well-conceived too. Watching it now, of course the culprit seems obvious, but the ingenious use of the musical notes as a coded message was pretty clever, not to mention that the culprit doesn't just use another cliche string-and-pulley device yet again, and instead utilize realistic techniques to cover up the crime. I also like the fact that Conan uses a creative way of voicing Kogoro this time. Kogoro also calls out on Conan's interference with the crime scene again, but this routine does seem to wear out, so I can understand why they stopped having him (and the other adults) do that over the years.

It's not all tears and sorrows, as the episode also provides some laughs with Kogoro's name. Nobody knows who Mouri Kogoro is yet at this point, so they mistake him for Akechi Kogoro, the detective from Rampo's mystery novels. lol That's a pretty fun self-awareness right there. Interesting that the elderly police officer refers to Conan as "Akechi-kun" instead rather than Mouri. All in all, this episode was a good example of the top-notch writing from Gosho.

Also worth mentioning too is the realistic blood splatter on one of the victims who was knifed on the back. You don't see that kind of detail on the computer-generated animation of Conan today.

It was a good episode, albeit a tragic case.

What irked me though is Ran's attitude at the end of the episode. After witnessing and knowing the horrible things, she's too careless and cheerful.

Definitely my favorite case so far, it just left a stronger impression on me with how the case progressed. it probably helped that the ep was longer, didn't even realize because it was so interesting that I never paused

I also guessed that it would be Dr. Narumi fairly early in. Others above have mentioned some things that were red alerts like her him being presented as so innocent that it had to be him regardless.

In my case I noticed that Dr. Narumi said something along the lines of, "Please solve this case quickly. I don't want to do any more forensic examinations." At that point how did she know that there would be more than one murder? At that point not even Conan knew that there would be more, he deduced that right after this scene so how could Dr. Narumi have known already?
"If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll make it quick."

A 48 minute special this early into the series, oh well, I didn't mind it. A rather surreal case, Conan for the first time actually struggled, well, at the end he managed to connect everything and thus solve the case. It's unfortunate that so many people died though, including the culprit.

What an amazing episode. My favorite case so far without a doubt! If you think about it, Shinichi failed this case in a way. He failed to save Dr. Narumi from killing all those people. Also, to respond to that comment above me, yeah I too noticed Ran being to cheerful at the end of the episode lol. I guess she's getting used to all the detective work.

First one hour especial (if one hour for you is 48 minutes, of course) was amazing! The killer was really unexpected this time, and every time someone died, it was one of the people I suspected. I loved this one

She is trying to cheer up Conan from his sadness. Kogoro was casual even during the murder scene. Why not point at him? They are all used to murders by this time. It was her who was crying in episode 1 and Shinichi cheering her up saying she needs to be used to them. Murders happen all around all the time. It is also a way of cheering us after the serial killings by the anime/manga team, a pleasant way of ending light heartedly after heart wrenching episode.

I must be the only one but i didnt feel much sympathy for all the people who died in this case. They are all murderers who killed many people. They burned the whole family including little kids. Not that i support the culprit though. Though i might feel little sad for her/him. Even Keiji Aso is no pure man who helped sell drugs. But it is saddest part that he and his family were killed in fire. No one is innocent here.
I hate how almost every culprit is made to be avenging rather than being evil and the sympathy music played for them at the end when they say their sob story. It is as if all people are so good that they only kill when they are wronged. Wen it is actually people who kill are so selfish and heartless.

I agree with you completely, the fact that most of the victims in Detective Conan are scumbags, annoyed me too quite a lot. The murderers here are usually portrayed as more sympathetic than the victims, and for some reason Gosho avoided plots with really "evil" culprits. However, in the last couple of hundred episodes, I noticed that there are more evil murderers, although I am not sure if it's because of the episodes being anime originals rather than manga-based or if Gosho had indeed decided to change the stereotype he was using before.

I like the island setup, that was such a complex case of revenge, I didn't expect the culprit doctor to be a disguised male who happens to be the 1st victim's son

bro the last thing i thought was that the doctor was gonna be a guy nor Seiji himself...
anyway, this episode was actually really interesting with the plot and how it unfolded. honestly hooked on the last part when it said about, "thanks, little detective," like, what does that mean under the sub-ext (probably overthinking it and wanting it to be later addressed ngl)

can't believe its episode 11 and its this good
