but nothing Macross or Gundam related.

Simply recommend me some mecha anime that you liked.

I don't mind if its already on my PTW.
I don't mind if its old or new (though if old, it should have aged well).

Just want to see if you guys can help me accordingly prioritise the mecha anime that I hope to watch some day.

It would be helpful if you could add a little comment to say why you recommend it.

Eureka Seven

The first half drags on for too long, but the second half makes it all worth it.

Space Runaway Ideon - The first mecha series that really incorporated psychological aspects. It's where Neon Genesis Evangelion drew a lot of influence from.

Armored Trooper Votoms - On your PTW. Really gripping intense military warfare. One of the most engaging shows I've ever seen. The first episode is one of my favorites.

Fang of the Sun Dougram - It's basically like LoGH with mechs. A lot of politics and strategy involved.

Muteki Choujin Zanbot 3 - On your PTW. The creator of TTGL drew a lot of influence from this show.

Infinite Ryvius - On your PTW. It's essentially like Lord of the Flies on a spaceship. The mecha aspect isn't too important in this one. It's one of my favorites and extremely underrated.

Bubblegum Crisis - Not really a mecha as in big piloted suits. They wear these little body suits, the cast is really likeable and has a distinct 80s feel with the appearances and music.

Modern mechs you have to see on your PTW, Heroic Age and Eureka Seven are really good.

I highly recommend watching it.

I appreciate every reply in this thread thus far (not including Gunbuster which i've already seen). Will make the appropriate adjustments soon.

@Smirking.
Thanks, that was especially helpful.

@HATUL300 & el_putazo
Funnily enough, I removed bokurano from my PTW 5 mins before making this thread as I was advised that the manga is better overall.

@lovelydeath
A bit of both actually.
The main reason I made this thread was to help me arrange the priority of the mecha anime in my large PTW (my PTW list mainly serves to remind me of the existence of any anime that I would probably like).
And to think there was once a day when I would limit my PTW to 50 titles ha...

Further recommendations are welcome.

Of course it was, TTGL was a tribute to many mecha anime, and in some ways, a parody of mecha anime. Pretty irrelevant though since OP has already seen it.

Heroic Age -> Really worth watching, and don't just give up after watching one or two episodes, give it a try. I rated it 10/10

Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari -> What I love about it is that the main character isn't only overpowered, he's also good at almost everything. I rated it 9/10

Yeah, Heroic Age really seems to be a hit or a miss with people. The show gets a lot better as it goes on. The ending was one of the most emotional endings that I've ever seen. That song.... ;_;

Oh? I've wanted to watch Heroic Age for a while now. In fact its been on my list longer than any other mecha but my friend felt it was mediocre and he didn't like the concept of a bunch of people saving the Universe describing many aspects as childish. Since then its taken a backseat on my PTW.

However I really feel like watching it now after looking at this thread.

Another mecha that's been on my PTW for a while and that also seems to be hit or miss is Asura Cryin'.
If anyone has seen that please share your thoughts.

I've never seen it and I'm not very interested as of now. I've seen a lot more mecha than most people and with my experience I've learned that modern mecha shows are almost always inferior to the classics. Asura Cryin was also based off a LN which is still publishing now so I'm not sure if the anime has any sort of conclusive ending. But of course, since I haven't seen it I can't give any definitive answers.

It's one of the classics, I'm surprised you haven't watched it yet. This series employ mecha merely as machines, not some demigod, ancient artifacts, or WMD. Just machines, cool giant machines.

Eureka Seven, Code Geass and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are really good, also how about Zoids. I would like to also recommend Outlaw Star but don't know if it is classified as a proper mecha; but it is an amazing anime that I would highly recommend.

Well mecha certainly is quite a genre, one of the oldest as well. A lot of people have been bringing up the newer ones and indeed you may want to go for them first. But you've probably already heard of all of that anyways so... If you do have an appreciation for older anime there are many mecha classics to enjoy.

The ones that I personally know of and would recommend -

Armored Trooper Votoms
Fang of the Sun Dagram

Zambot 3
Space Runaway Ideon
Aoki Ryuusei SPT Layzner (incomplete, great anime but subs are at least a year from being finished most likely)

other than that, I believe their is an oldschool mecha club that has a pretty huge list, and you can look into /m/ fansubs, a small collection of groups that subtitle mecha classics in particular.

These are all good,
-Aquarion Evol
-Guilty Crown(sort of mecha, but in my opinion very good anime)
-Robotics;Notes(not the everyday mecha anime. Doesn't have sooo much action but its nice and a fun watch)
-Sacred Seven(ratings are low, but it was interesting and somewhat worth the watch)
-Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto(rating sort of low, but to say the truth I really enjoyed it)

thats most of what i got. hope you can find something you like.

Rather than the TV series I chose to watch the OVAs with the movies since they run in an alternate continuity (?). These days I don't have the time to spend on so many episodes but if the TV series is really much better than i'll also add it to the list.

Indeed, I liked the concept of 'realistic mechas'.
The movies have top priority on my PTW.

Thank you for your replies. They have all been taken into consideration.
Classic mecha recommendations are certainly welcome along with the recent titles.

@LayedBack
Layzner looks really intriguing! Though it's a pity that each episode is released every few months. Will certainly add it to the list.
Also had a look at /m/ and some of those other mecha clubs around here.

This thread has been pretty helpful so far in helping me to make up my mind on certain titles.
In this case, the more recommendations, the better so further suggestions are appreciated.

Isekai no sekishi monogatari was a really good mecha series and i'm not a very big mecha fan. One episode is 45 minutes so the art and characters are very good. I also really liked the OP :)

EDIT: I just looked at your anime list and it seems you have watched this.
