The eyes.

The tentacles.

The lolis.

The fact that they're made in China.

Oh, and before someone shoots me; cartoons have smoother animation, while anime has better art.

Also generally better music in anime and more stress on the idea of story telling in general.

Assuming you mean American cartoons not that this isn't going to turn into a big discussion about the meaning of anime anyway.

Anime is spelled a-n-i-m-e while cartoon is spelled c-a-r-t-o-o-n.

Variety. Anime has more genres and demographics, I'd say. That and it has a little something I like to call...balls. People can die, couples may make love, and they aren't afraid to cover other subject matter that most US animators wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

I shouldn't have to point this out, but said things, when done in comedic situations, lose serious impact and sophistication. If you wanted to provide a co-responding anime-equivalent US animated work you should have gone with something like Heavy Metal. However, I already admitted the existence of such rare works in my post there by using the term "most" instead of something with more binding context like "all".

I'd definitely be watching more US animation if we made stuff like Monster, Haibane Renmei, Garden of Sinners, Black Lagoon, Higurashi no Naka Koroni, Gunslinger Girl, Koi Kaze, Death Note, Ef-A Tale of Memories, Eden of the East, etc. but we just don't.

Here's what I say. There are a few catagories that I use. There are cartoons, which are storyless or near storyless shows that are comedies, which includes some anime. However, some anime are not cartoons. I also make a specific category for American action toons, and I suppose I need one for French action toons as well. The American and French action toons are more action oriented and sometimes have storylines.
Basically, an anime is an animated television show made in Japan to me. It may or may not be a cartoon.

Do I complicate things too much?

EDIT: Stop complaining about MLP. Tis' a good show. You may not like it and that's fine though. One might even argue that it isn't a good show. Still haven't heard the Japanese dub. It amuses me that the possibility of watching it subbed may soon come.

You didn't say the whole thing, according to one wikipedia article:
"A cartoon is a form of two-dimensional illustrated visual art. While the specific definition has changed over time, modern usage refers to a typically non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satire, caricature, or humor, or to the artistic style of such works. An artist who creates cartoons is called a cartoonist."
That could mean that one could use my definition, which refers to comedy shows. Cartoon to me means its a comedy, which includes some anime, but not all.
Also I personally like to use it to specifically refer to storyless comedy shows.
Some anime aren't comedy. Shows like Serial Experiments Lain or Neon Genesis Evangelion are far from comedy shows, and as such, not cartoons. But shows like Hetalia: Axis Powers or Sgt. Frog I might call a cartoon. I don't know if Hetalia has a story though....

I know, but it still covers "mature subject matter", even if it is, as you said, put in a comedic situation. Also, while the pourcentage of kid's shows in cartoons is quite a bit higher than that of anime, I still think that a huge part of the "cartoon industry" is dominated by the "adult" shows.
