There are plenty of manga out there all of varying length. Some conclude after only a few volumes while others span over years and years of releases. Series like One Piece or Bleach stretch on to the hundreds of chapters while others like Mekakushi no Kuni end after only less than a dozen volumes.

In the end, it might all come down to whether or not you prefer to follow a story and it's characters as long as possible or whether you prefer seeing a conclusion to the plot and/or drama. Perhaps it depends on the type of manga your reading. When is long too drawn out and when is short to soon for you?

Doesnt matter how long it is. Something could start feeling drawn out after 50 chapters or it may take 400 chapters. A story getting stale has more to do with the authors ability to tell a story, plot development, character development, etc.

Um... the poll should be on volumes rather then chapters really. The weekly chapters are shorter then the monthly ones. So series like FMA seem like they don't have many chapters but one FMA chapter is larger then a Naruto one (cause FMA is monthly and Naruto is weekly).

I like long manga that are epic and manage to continue the story decently. Short manga often lack development. But yeah, long manga are hard to do since keeping that interest there is difficult. There is a lot of somewhat short manga that I wish just continued though.

First off, I feel that I should apologize. I originally believed I had thought this topic out enough beforehand but I was mistaken.(Happens often, sadly) My apologies.

Looking back, I guess what I meant to ask was what everyone's overall preference for length. I just went about it the wrong way. I agree, interest does play a large role when deciding as does the authors ability. I've favorites on both ends of the length spectrum for those very reasons. Just was curious if even with the manga holding your interest overall, if there was a point when you thought the manga itself or perhaps just an arc had stretched on for too long.

Tried to amend the poll above to better reflect what was originally meant, though actually I'd prefer removing the poll altogether. Hopefully, though, it now reflects what it was meant to portray. Thanks for the responses and feedback so far everyone. =)

I'd say somewhere from 5-12 volumes is what I appreciate most. So, in the middle I guess (maybe this should be a poll option too?) If it's just a choice from something like a 1-3 volume manga compared to a 30 or more volume manga, that's tough. I'll tentatively say the 1-3 one. In the idea that it is better to be left wanting more than having a good story just start to annoy me and kill my interest because it's draaaaging. However, I reserve the right to completely change my mind on that (lol).

I guess longer series more often. Tends to be disappointing when they're too short or just a few volumes..

Depends on how the author handles it. Some stories naturally come to a short conclusion, others lend themselves to longer epics. People can feel slighted by a quick ending, or weary of a drawn out experience.

manga series like Bleach, Inuyasha, and Naruto are far too long for me. but Fruits Basket and Shaman King seem all right.

depends on what mood i am. i switch between obsessing over anime to obsessing over manga.

Preferably 12+ volumes. I felt that some titles were cut to short and could've expanded the story since it had so much potential. Examples are Kurozuka and Zombie Powder.

It depends on the series, of course, but I've found that most series tend to begin to drag by the time they reach 15 volumes or so. On the other hand, it's hard to get attached to a short series unless the writing is exceedingly good. So... 5-12 volumes sounds about right.

oh, these little earthquakes

I generally like manga to be 15 to 30 volumes long. But it varies, sometimes it feels like the writer is making the series to long and is getting away from the point. Other times I wish that they were longer because I still have questions.
So I'd have to say it varies from author to author.

oneshots and short mangas are good when you want a quick manga fix and dont have much time to dedicate to reading 7+mangas. Well, if i start a manga i finish it usually in one sitting so if a manga is really long (10 vols +) my whole day gets eaten up. (lets just say i read mars in one day..... and i stayed up until like 5am reading it.)

but i really dont mind either. but when it gets so long to the point where i get bored with it then whatever. though some mangas i get bored in the second volume :P

generally i like reading 7vol mangas. they're not too short but they're not too long and the time it would take to re-read it wouldnt be so much :3

I normally prefer the longer manga BUT only if it has a got plot and the characters are constantly growing and moving forward. I've read multi-volume manga where the characters kept making the same mistakes over and over and over again for 20 chapters and it became so boring and tedious I felt like hanging myself.

I suppose you could say that ideally, longer is always better.

that's assuming characters continue to develop, the story continues to progress and improve at a good pace, and the world of the manga just gets more and more interesting.

sadly, reality is very very far from such ideals... character development isn't always constant, plots get boring and too drawn out at times, and the world reaches a point where you're just bored with it. at some point, it kind of just turns into a bad marraige.

bleh, an aside from that I kind of like short manga. they get adapted into anime better :P no fillers, no multiple seasons, no incomplete stories... just one hopefully solid swing that's clearly hit or miss.

In most of the cases 10-15 is good shounen, up to 10 shoujo, seinen vary - berserk type and the good 1-2 vols...
But manga no matter what type over 40 vol(even 30) isn`t good for your health(ex One piece, berserk, maybe naruto and several other titles )

I have no preference; if the author can keep me interested in his or her series regardless of length then it simply showcases their ability as a writer. If I am going to continue buying a series that is more than ten volumes, however, it has to be something that I really, really enjoy in order to spend that much money on it - though, since I read a lot of shônen series, I am used to picking up titles that exceed this limit.

I perfer shorter manga but not that short. I was sad that Once Upon A Glashma was only 1 volume. About 5 - 30 volumes is good for me, but if something I really like is over 30 volumes, then I don't mind.

I tend to read everything. Lately, I have been reading one shots, mostly because they are short and if the story is bad, I don't have to endure it long. I have a lot of ongoing series so it's nice to take a break and actually finish something. XD

For me, it really doesn't matter how long the series is or how short it is. If it keeps my intrest I keep reading. But if it doesn't keep my intrest (Excel Saga for example) then I only read/buy the first volume.

some stories are great but only last for a few chapters while some are great and last for 10-20 volumes, it all depends on what story it is, I just think of it like this:
long story= long reading time but it takes you longer to finaly know how the story ends/short story= short reading time but you can finish it quite fast without having to wonder about whats gonna happen next

I will read anything as long as it catchs my interest. But I prefer the long drawn out series that have about 20 volumes or more. I love to read about the character and watch how they grow in the eyes of an artist. Plus its really internesting to go back and compare the art styles from earlier volumes. Some artist mature and refine the art in a series as the series goes on and I love to read and see it take effect before my eyes.

Doesn't really matter how long it is. If it is good I don't mind if its long, but for series such as Naruto which just dies down, I do not think it is worth it. What I think matters is the chapter length. I appreciate the short chapters, but I think the long chapters are much better than short chapters like the ones in the shonen jump.
