or something that emphasizes this attribute of him being a protector. preferably something from seinen. I also prefer a good yet realistic (if possible) ending so no tragedies pls.

recommend completed anime only pls.

edit: if you can think of anything from josei that would be good too.

Preferably something from seinen? That's going to be hard.. from the title I was about to post "every romance/shoujo anime".

Inuyasha (This isn't realistic at all, + it's on your list but is "-" so I assumed you haven't gone deep in?)

Bokura ga Ita

Toradora

Clannad

Kanon

Nana

Itazura na Kiss

Sorry, a bit hard to find something realistic in the romance genre. If the male character in a romance anime isn't a wimp, he'll typically be protective.

maybe Hiiro no Kakera. I dropped it though, because I didn't like the female lead

Well I said seinen because I doubted their would be something like this in josei. I'm just looking for a somewhat more mature anime.

You doubt there would be a guy protecting a girl (btw a very common fantasy for most girls to find there prince charming) in a Josei -_-... I think Josei/Shoujou was probably where you should have started... I would say however what you are looking for is almost like a written law of most shoujo, don't really have any anime to recommend bet there are ALOT of shoujo manga with a male lead extremely protective of the female lead and more mature (funnily enough shoujo references sex more often than seinen in most cases) though this does depend on which shoujo you pick up... however your first statement was basically what every shoujo (that isn't a tragedy) has in common with one another.

Then that's just my ignorance I suppose.
on a side note I started watching Steins; gate, Im seven episodes in and so far it's not what I was looking for but I'm enjoying the series none the less.

Darker than Black. Realistic and Seinen with a protective main character... That's pretty hard, Darker than Black is the only thing that comes to mind.

I wish Mirai Nikki had the roles reversed. I really hated how the guy was being protected by the girl, but that girl was so cunning that I loved the show. I don't usually take a liking to female protagonists, but she was just so amazing.

And it's just beginning. After the shit hit the fan I couldn't stop watching it and marathoned trough all the remaining episodes. And Okabe only gets more and more protective from that on, so you're in for a real treat.

Out of curiosity, why was it such a bad thing for the female to be the protector? Many guys don't seem to realize that many women fantasize about/want to be protectors/providers as well. And good characters shouldn't be restricted by stereotypical gender roles.

Anyway, only romances I can think of (not a big romance fan meself) that fit the bill are:

Tenchi Muyo (Not terribly realistic, however. But you got some good protector Tenchi at the end)

The Ah! My Goddess Movie (I assume the series has some of what you want, too, but never personally seen it. Also with the fantastical elements)

After War Gundam X (It's one of the least realistic and more idealistic of the Gundam series, but it has a strong centralized romance with strong male protector. The Gundam franchise might be up your alley)

And maybe the Appleseed films (only seen one of the two, but I think that fits with what you're going for)

I do know of some others with romantic elements and male protectors, but they're also fairly tragic to an extent and more fantastical. But I'll throw them on in case you're interested:

Darker Than Black- realistic, with a protective main character.

Hidan no Aria - When the MC is in a near death situation or gets his blood flowing he kinda splits personality into a man with a rank e to a rank s butei(an armed detective who uses guns and/or swords/knives to catch criminals) where he protects girls from danger. It is kinda realistic except with some characters and have some special power/trait inherited from an ancestor.

Full Metal Panic!- all time favorite, i tend to rewatch all 3 seasons every year for some reason, it very realistic other than the mecha genre.

Just finished steins; gate. It was an amazing series. I saw the first half dub and the last half sub. Not sure if I was able to tell the difference sub vs dub.

I tried to watch Hidan no Aria dubbed, but I didn't like the female voice actor they chose for the lead so I switch to the sub which I like the voice better.

Finished Hidn no Aria. I liked it for the most part, the thing I don't like about harems is the unoriginality of the charters. This also had ecchi in it as well which comes of as immature at times even though I know its sometimes for comedic effect. The main plot wasn't exactly a strong point in this one and fact that the villain had such an obvious yet convenient weakness I thought was ridiculous, but then again I knew better than to expect more from this type of anime in the action department. I was also disappointed to find that this series isn't truly completed and I'm not sure if a second season is planning to be made.
