Anime movies and OVA's, whats your opinion?

When people think about anime they usually think about the average T.V series, which is about 13-26 episodes these days (well I've noticed a lot more 10-11 ep anime recently though). So when OVA's or movies are mentioned a lot of the time I feel like they're ignored or just not given much attention.

Theres some very obvious reasons to this, the first and foremost being the lack of run-time, especially in movies your usually given only 1-2 hours to finish up your plot and obviously not everyone is going to be pleased with that. Especially anime fans in particular who are more used to lengthy character and plot developments, plot twists and what not. Aside from that, I noticed that most movies only get noticed if they're part of a franchise like the new EVA movies. Movies with original plots are often overlooked, because they have no exposure. The last reason and I think this applies more to OVA's is that OVA's and movies with a continues story often take a long time in between releases. For example Hellsing Ultimate and Gundam Unicorn take about half a year to get released. For movies the new Berserk movies and Mardock Scramble get released about 1 a year. This leads to people losing interest in the plot atleast until the next movies is released.

Now for why people WOULD like anime movies. The run time again is a factor, not everyone has the time to watch a full 26 episode anime, so a movie or short OVA is much more preferable. In my case I find it very hard to start something without finishing what I'm currently watching first (unless its airing). So I tend to choose shorter anime or movies and OVA's so I can finish something relatively fast if I want to start something else. Production values tend to be higher for movies and OVA's leading to better animation quality, which I know a lot of people including myself enjoy. In the west I'd say movies are much more popular than longer T.V series, so why not for anime?

I find it kind of strange that it's almost the opposite when it comes to popularity of movies and OVA's in anime and similar media in the west. Of course there are always exceptions to this, for example just about about Ghibli film. Satoshi Kon's films are fairly well known. As well as most movies that are connected to more popular anime franchises (EVA, Cowboy Bebop movies, Rurouni Kenshin OVA's etc)

Lastly what are some of your favorite anime movies and OVA's you've seen? For me I enjoyed the majority of Ghibli films, my top 5 being Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Nausicaa valley of the Wind and Whisper of the heart. I'm a huge fan of anything by Satoshi Kon who passed away not too long ago T_T (R.I.P) As well as a handful of other movies and OVA's like Akira, Jin-roh and the wolf brigade, GITS(1995), Redline, Ninja Scroll, Golden Boy, Genocyber, Golgo 13: The Professional and Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal.

So yeah, discuss!

Nothing wrong with movies. Infact, 2 out of my 5 favourites on my profile are movies. I see them the same way as other movies, you have good movies and you have bad movies.

Movies generally aren't my thing because they usually can't pull off a well executed story in that short amount of time, but when they do it's orgasmic.

Kara no Kyoukai is a good example of movies I like though... mostly because it's more like a series of movies... so you get a good story and good art/animation.

When I watch an anime movie, it's generally only for the higher level art/animation. If the story is passable then I'm fine with that, but if the story is actually good then that's just gravy.

Movies, OVAs and specials can all be a great addition to a series. As in the case of Aria the Arietta bacanno specials or the Haruhi movie. Although they could be a fan service esque special where it's the infamous beach episode. So it all depends, although personally if it's a recap more likely then not I'm not going to watch it.
Ghibli is awesome, and I've been meaning to check out Satoshi Kon.

I actually prefer movies to some extent because despite what you said the quality of movies is a cut above a series for obvious reasons. As you can see from my PTW I have a bunch of movies on there, and yeah most of them are from known shows already, but there's also one I know very little about and I am following only because of the staff on it.

My favourites so far are the two EVA movies (and I absolutely hated the series, but despite less development, the characters IMO are better in this and so is everyhing else), Kara no Kyoukai (3,5,7 in particular), Tsuiohuken, Redline and Vampire Hunter D.

I generally prefer them to TV series'. Better animation, more concise storytelling, and most importantly, more intriguing/experimental content (in general, of course). It seems as though movies are usually much less restricted in terms of what they explore. Not sure if that's because film attracts the best directors and studios, or a differing budget set up, or a differing audience, or what.

They're awesome (more so it they're made by Ghibli or Makoto Shinkai). Putting the animation and higher production values aside, movies and OVAs dare to do things anime mostly wouldn't (MIndgame and Genius Party are good examples). As for character development and plot twists, it can perfectly be done in 1 or 2 hours, unless that you don't like anime that doesn't have like 10 plot twists or something lol

My fav movies: GitS, Mononoke Hime, The end of evangelion, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
Fav OVAS: LoGH, FLCL, Kara no kyoukai, Genius Party Beyond

I usually watch movies more for the visuals than I do the overall plot. At the very least, for most of the recent movies.

Though I do hope to see more movie series like Break Blade, Kara no Kyoukai and Mardock Scramble.

edit: misread something, deleted something.

I think I might check out Mardock Scramble, looks visually delicious.

Edit: Now I had to delete my response to your response, thanks a lot Paul!

I love both, I don't mind on the length of the series but more about how well the series is done. That's why I love anime movies just as much, a lot of them are well done and really have that raw emotion.

I don't believe OVA and Movie is a place where anime character develop or introduce too many things. I like OVA when it brings a closure to the anime.

I think the movies tend to be longer than necessary and OVAs usually aren't long enough or not as good as the television series.

I generally prefer Tv series, the longer the better. Because when they turn out to be great I can enjoy them for so much longer, while movies, even when I end up liking them, are already over again.

That being said, I do enjoy my fair share of movies and OVAs too, especially when I'm not in the mood to get into something new and just want something to watch for a quick fix so to say. Even if it sucks, it doesn't cost much time and you don't have to worry about starting another mediocre series that you neither want to drop nor marathon, making a mess of your 'Currently watching' list. They're also great for simul-watches.
However when I'm currently into something I marathon, I'm not interested in watching movies at all. At other times I watch a movie each day for a week.

Regarding ongoing OVAs or series of movies, I can absolutely second that the long time between releases is a major turnoff. Either I want to marathon a series or I want to watch it on a weekly basis, everything else is too slow. Especially with 20+ ongoing series on my watching list, I wouldn't be able to remember any details ever of a show where I watch an episode every 2 months or so.
I don't lose sight of stuff like the Mardock Scramble Movies or Towa No Quon though, I just wait until they have finishd airing and have been released with subs so I can watch them in order. The Berserk movies are different, because I've read the manga at least 5 times so I don't forget anything anymore ^^.
But the new Yamato OVA I want to wait until 2025 when it may have finished airing, even though I've seen the original series and should remember the plot.
I probably regret this post by now.

Once upon a time, anime on TV wasn't particularly good, and OVAs and films were really the place to go. But nowadays, the best TV shows are able to use their longer running time to do things which are a little out of the reach of the shorter formats. This is only true at the high end, OVAs and films can still be very good viewing. But it nevertheless makes them feel slightly surplus to requirements, and so I find I don't feel it necessary to look carefully at all the new films and OVAs which are made the same way I do the new TV shows. I'll just watch one if it catches my eye, rather than going out actively looking.

Personally I prefer regular TV series's to OVAs and movies. But there are some great OVAs and movies out there!

My favorite movie off the top of my head would most likely be Princess Mononoke. It's great a great movie that did everything right in my opinion!

Favorite OVA would be Tenchi Muyo: War of Geminar. 45min episodes and there are 13 of them. Great development and just love it!
