my pc is black and grey with a massive fan at the size of a football on the side. there is a huge on/off button on the bottom of the front. and it has a nice blue-ish light coming from it.

Just bought a new one about a week ago. Nothing to fancy, ordered it online and let the shop put it together. This is what the case looks like:

mine's not that special, and getting old now.... I only picked this case for the carrying handle so I can lug it around easily because I was too lazy to drill metal myself. I installed some extra-silent led fans, including two in the side vents because the airflow was poor, and I added a blue sound-activated strobe inside, that i usually turn off anyway... :P

...hooked up to a 20" lcd widescreen, crappy keyboard, and mediocre laser mouse. I've got another half-butchered system in my closet collecting dust.... where this one will likely end up soon... :/

I am a banana.

laptops are the worst thing you can get with all my experience in computers. like 80% percent of all laptops made are have design flaws which make them fry components and die or have hear issues and what not most laptops nowadays are probably only good for 2 years and they can't be upgraded.

New one

Old one

Edit: while it's true that laptop both due to the crappy heat dissipation and underclocked GPUs are awful for gaming, they do have other uses (especially TabletsPC, couldn't live without mine, I use it both as a "book" reader and a graphical tablet for photoshop with some VNC software and much more)
This isn't totally true:

there are a lot of frames avaiable to assembly custom laptops that can be upgraded later on.

Except they're a necessary evil. :P

Maybe you could explain it to me, but why the hell would you want to upgrade a laptop?

Most people don't get a laptop for gaming (because face it, its just stupid to spend $1200 on a 'gaming' laptop when you could just spend like half of that and build an insane desktop).
And any of the current laptops and tablets being sold today are more then adequate for writing reports/CAD/graphic design/surfing the internet or whatever.

And as for me, I have a 3 year old desktop (the case is an old Antec Sonata which still looks quite nice) sitting next to my desk hooked up to a 21" LCD monitor, and a Thinkpad sitting on my desk.

I have an Antec Sonata II, but I have to keep the side panel off because it gets too hot otherwise. My video card is too long to mount a fan on the drive bay, and I can't fit a fan in the 5.25" bays due to DVD drives. Makes cooling problematic, so with a large video card and three HDDs it gets rather warm. So I have to keep the panel off. I have a fan cabletied to the HDDs on the outside, and an extra fan on my video card to help keep it cool. It's messy and ugly, and noisy, but it works.

I'll be getting a new case before summer, so I can run some proper cooling before summer temperatures destroy me. But I may just wait to build a whole new machine instead of buying a new case to temporarily house this one before I get new stuff.

No mods or rice, I hate LED fans and nonsense. I want quiet, cool and subdued looks. I like the Sonata II for its piano black finish, but it's too hot with my gear. Dell 24" monitor, nice black and silver frame. Logitech Z5500s also in silver and black. And my desk and chair are black. So I kind of have a theme going. It all works well.

The only colour on my desk are external HDDs, one blue and one red (black doesn't count) -- I'm hoping Vantec release an eSATA version of their white one soon; http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/292

I have http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/211 http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/210 and http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/275 (all SATAII versions, they only list IDE for blue and red for some reason)

Best external enclosures around. <3

actually a gaming desktop could be had for around 600. mine was had for 400 and with another 200 i was gaming, then i spent more money for ascetics like the water cooling and and case. gaming is fun as shit. laptops are nice but for 600 bucks and it lasting 2 years and buying another for 600 bucks. where does that leave most laptops i have looked at or fixed for people had design flaw or was prone to hard ware failure this includes the 2 dead laptops i own.

Just so you know, I wrote that an insane desktop could be built for about $600. ;)

And face it, buying a $600 laptop is just asking for a DOA or something similar within a month. Spend more money and get a better quality one that will actually last a bit.

Of course gaming is fun, but the lack of any good PC games being released in the past year kind of makes me wonder if its even worth building a new gaming rig now.

Its an HP man, its not a Toshiba.
HP Pavilion dv9500
And it has no over heating issues, I have worked with computers for 8+ years now. And this laptop has no flaws (besides having vista on it), it runs great I have had it for a year+ with no probs at all.

How long does it take for the one with the raptor in it to boot up?

Too long, it's an old Raptor so unfortunately even the Western Digital 640GB 16MB Cache (two 320GB platters) and Seagate Barracuda 500GB 32MB Cache HDDs boot to Windows faster.

Lol. Nice bottleneck there jj. Unless you're OCing like nothing else that is. Which you should be able to since you have water cooling. (I mean, I've been running my AMD 64 3000+ at 2.8 GHz on stock cooling for the better part of 2 years now). :P

My water cooling came with 100 or more cfm fan i put in a 60 cfm. That tells you it's mainly for looks but i do have it tweaked with nvidia ntune. once i get a 2.4 ghz dual core it will be banging, my fps will JUMP, but in between wanting to get a body kit for my car and 200 -300 dollar ebay purchase i need to figure out which i want more. sandgolem runs an older amd 1.8 ghz it has a cheaper fan cooler on it and it does 2.0 ghz and still blows out cold air! :P

oh btw my fsb is still air cooled. Once i get the rest of the parts in this coming week i can put the rest of my water cooling system together. then i can do more OC keep in mind it is really an Compaq from best buy under all that giddy up it is an asus board stock oem no over clocking options but i think ntune does it through the registry it is an asus A8N-LA(Nagami) not bad for a stocker. As you already know a new mother board means a reinstall of xp wich i really don't want to do.

It's a mistake to think watercooling is a better cooler than airflow cooling. Watercooling is more silent because of the central fan and heatsink, but it definitely does not have to be better. I have seen heatsinks perform better.

Oh it was something i may have not known at first but those massive air coolers on newegg cool better than water cooling i think water cooling LOOKS cool, Thats why i got it
my water cooling system actualy came witha loud fan but i never used it. sandy's cooler is cheapy like 9 bucks the surface wasn't even machined.
