So...this is going to sound kind of weird. Basically, I need some recommendations for what NOT to watch. --------> Here begins the tl;dr section, if you want just skip to the bottom of the post where I'll sum everything up nicely. [I started watching anime last summer, and began with titles like Sailor Moon and Tokyo Mew Mew. Then, I went in a little darker and watched Noir, Madoka Magica, and Paprika. Starting this season, I began watching Another. And, to be quite honest, it scared the shit out of me. Yeah, I know, most people don't even find it that scary, but I don't handle excessive blood, gore, and horror very well. I'll watch Another to the end just because I've gotten so far and I want to know the ending, but I seriously do NOT ever want to watch anything like this again, even if it's really good. I honestly had nightmares after watching each episode of Another, and I keep seeing random objects like coat hangers and such and imagining getting impaled or something. I know, this sounds totally ridiculous and stupid, but I'm a 16 year old girl who still enjoys mahou shoujo and cheesy romances more than horror shows like Another.] So, to sum it all up... What I'm okay with: -Blood, death, and violence associated with fighting and battles. -Mysteries that don't involve random people dying or getting hurt one by one. -Shows that are creepy, but not in the sense that definite impending doom is near. What I'm not okay with: -Innocent characters who could die at any moment -A bunch of people will die in each episode is guaranteed, but the form that death takes is unexpected, gruesome, and horrific. -Basically, shows similar to Another. So, what shows, based on the above criteria, should I definitely AVOID if I want to maintain my peace of mind and sanity? |

Bokurano has children (some are more innocent than others) that are set up to die, but their deaths aren't really unexpected. And they do have forewarning before death. And once the initial ones are chosen, that's it. Their deaths are also not horrific or gruesome. Shiki would be one to avoid, though. Kakurenbo would probably also be one to avoid. Baccano! is a fantastic show, but innocent people do die, and some of the deaths are rather gorey and horrific. It's very far from an 'impending doom' feel, though. ...Wow. I like dark, and it's hard to come up with ones that would really fit the criteria. There aren't that many to avoid. |

Seconding Shiki. Creepy and gory. :( I rather liked the show though, though I think I liked it more for the characters than anything else. Ghost Hound! It freaked me out in the very first minute of the first episode. Oh, no one actually dies mysteriously in every episode, though the atmosphere of most of the episodes is rather creepy. It does get milder towards the end though, where everything starts making more sense, but you might still want to avoid it. I can't deny that it had a very nice plot though. xD Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? is really... meaninglessly bloody. The plot itself is not scary in any way, but the really scary part, I feel, is how the main character manages to get himself half-murdered right from the first episode of the show. |

Ah, a kindred spirit! I, too, cannot watch excessive violence/gore. (Which is such a shame because there are a number of series I'd really like to see but can't for that reason.) That said, I'd like to say I think both Ghost Hound and Ghost Hunt should be fine for you. I loved Ghost Hound; it had no violence that I remember; and was only moderately, good-amounts-of creepy. Ghost Hunt I only liked okay, but it, too, should probably be all right for you, provided you watch with the lights on. Ones that have not yet been mentioned that you might want to steer clear of (ones that were more than I could handle, violence-wise, anyway) are: Bakemonogatari Yami no Matsuei |

It misses out enormous chunks of the plot, and the story itself gets cut off about a third of the way through. And I'm not saying this just because I read the manga - I watched the anime first, and felt that it was terribly incomplete, and so then after that I read the manga. But anyway, it's good that you didn't find it incomplete or disjointed, I suppose? :3 ... Wait. I just reread your post, and you say 'Madoka'. As others have head, stay the hell away from Higurashi and Elfin Lied- both of which I hate to no end as well, so don't worry, I'm right there with you. And yeah, Gantz and Hell Girl should be avoided as well. I would also stay away from Daughters of Mnemosyne. Perfect Blue. It's by Satoshi Kon who did Paprika, but it's really a horror/psychological thriller, so avoid it Paranoia Agent should probably be avoided as well Not sure why Ga-Rei:Zero was mentioned. The first two episodes are scary but once you watch the entire series it's really great. But I suppose if you want to be ultra-safe you may as well avoid it. Avoid the X/1999 movie. You would probably like the series, but the movie is... Well for one it's AWFUL, and two it pretty much has all the stuff you hate. Characters dying for no reason, horror, lots of blood... Check out the series for sure though. |

Lis mentioned Kemono no Souja Erin on her list- if you can watch Avatar: The Last Airbender, then this should be okay. It's not a muder-mystery and people don't die randomly and there's no creepy atmosphere. She also had Tokyo Magnitude 8.0- again, it's not a murder-mystery, but it's a sad anime. People don't die in unexpected, horrific ways, but a few do die (offscreen). I mean, it's an earthquake. |

Then off of her list, Rainbow: Nisha, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shikabane Hime, and Steins;Gate should also be okay. Ghost Hunt is iffy since it is a supernatural mystery series (it has happy, lighthearted, funny arcs along with the creepy ones). Bokurano is also iffy, since they do die fighting but the whole feel is very much an impending-doom one. Ergo Proxy would probably be okay, but it does have a very depressing feel to it. Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate does have some innocent and rather gruesome deaths, but not unexpected, and it's not an impending-doom thing. |

Innocent people may die at any time unexpectedly, but not knowing in what forms. What a suggestion. I think you got a pretty complete set of shows already. I'll mention Speed Grapher because some of their powers used to kill is pretty crazy and unexpected because you don't know who has it. It's kind of mystery based too so it was pretty unpredictable. Not sure about Jigoku Shoujo, I think it's fine for you, because they usually kill off people who have some "reasons" to die, and usually its episodic nature only refer to the death of one person per episode, although it's all very opinionated whether they're justified to die or not, and how they die can be a bit creative, I suppose. |

@ Jigoku shoujo: I thought it was their ideology to not disregard bystanders/innocents. But yeah... there were other bad aspects, like how the victims (no matter deserved or undeserved) are severely undermatched by godlike powers of Ai and her companions. You are watching it fully expecting characters will die, but now knowing how. So yeah, more than enough reason to avoid it I suppose. |

I am also not sure about Jigoku Shoujo. I am similar to OP (16 year old girl, loved Madoka, can't stomach some parts of Another). Seriously, I thought Jigoku Shoujo and Madoka were on the same level of creepiness. And I really did love the individual stories of Jigoku Shoujo, I think it'd be a waste to not check it out. Just skip the actual "sending to hell" parts, like I did. Anyways, don't watch Mirai Nikki. There's definitely gore and blood and a lot of killing. |
