I sorta just want an anime with an awesome soundtrack. Listening to Death Note's "L's theme" just reminds of how much a soundtrack can impact a show.

I also loved Toradora's soundtrack to pieces.

**Of course I ALSO want a great story. The music will fall flat for me NO MATTER WHAT if the story is not compelling. The music has to fit the mood and convey it perfectly (or at least to a great extent). Genre does not matter (except don't rec me some shounen-ai...>_> y'know... the obvious ones lmao).

thanks for any and all recs, folks :)

Here's a link to my list if you want to reference what I like:

Well said. I couldn't say it any better.

Gundam Series, Macross Frontier (Though they are both Mecha's, I'd warn you).
Mawaru Penguindrum, Steins;Gate. These are ones I can think of the top of my head. Fate/Zero as well, but like Puella, they reuse the songs at wrong times sometimes (same person did both).

Shows with terrible stories but great Soundtracks:
Guilty Crown
Angel Beats! (You may like this one)

I second Madoka Magica (Yuki Kajiura at her best). And Mawaru Penguindrum (very versatile OST).

Panty and Stocking (if you like electronic music)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (done by Yoko Kanno, what else to say)
Hellsing Ultimate (quirky, energizing, dark)
Shiki (The music contributes a lot to setting the right atmosphere for the anime)

I'm sad you gave TTGL a 4. Libera me to hell with every epic fight in the series elevates the intensity so much its awesome.

Not sure how you generally feel about mecha series, but Eureka 7 was really good and the orchestral soundtrack mixed with electronic/techno beats was a great addition to the series given the established setting of the story. Though it shares TTGL with a wimpy protagonist that develops into a more complete character, so that may not suit you.

Also, Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's made up entirely of classical pieces.

if you havn't already go give Eureka Seven a shot right now, great story, AMAZING characters, and probably my favorite soundtrack of all time.

also, just finished Steins;Gate and while there wasn't too much bgm when it was there it really set the mood for the scene so i'd also reccomend that

I thought "Karigurashi No Arrietty" had a gorgeous soundtrack. A very Celtic sound. A weepy melancholy.

The other one I would recommend solely for it's soundtrack would probably be "Howl's Moving Castle". Sort of a Baroque Waltz feel.

Code Geass has some amazing OSTs; particularly the ones by Hitomi.
Eureka Seven had 5 pretty good ones. The rest were basically remixed versions of them(the 5 good ones).
Madoka Magica had 2 that were good. Considering that whole album only had around 12 songs.
Steins;Gate also had 2 really good ones. (Gate of Steiner, and Hacking to the Gate)
Anything by Yuki Kajiura. ie Kara no Kyoukai.

I would say Evangelion has the overall best soundtrack. Even though the same songs have been repackaged in over a dozen different albums.
If you are new to Evangelion, I recommend watching the movies first. The soundtrack of the second movie was amazing; covers orchestral, vocal, a bit of jazz, classical, piano, and etc.

Basically exactly what I was thinking. A TTGL epic fight was epic, and then the music started playing and I shat my pants.

I know a lot of people dislike it, but for some reason the mood of it seems more 'sarcastically happy' rather than genuinely cheesy/happy to me -
Mobile Suit Gundam: War In The Pocket

Also Mobile Suit Gundam with all it's late 70s/early 80s analogue synth blips - I like Space Runaway Ideons OST a lot also - especially 'Children'...

Hmm. Well let me explain why I have not finished it. I do NOT like it when animes that have such a good reputation and are so heavily revered turn out to let me down. The main thing I did not like about this show was that it was episodic. I can't stand that. That's why I dropped Darker than Black. I DO NOT like action anime that are episodic; besides, in each of these stories/plots I didn't even know what the central plot is. This destroys an anime's appeal to me and so that's why I didn't finish.

As for TTGL- I did not like the mecha design, and furthermore I

Oh and I also loathed that little princess. I thought she was retardtedly annoying. And the battles were just lackluster to me.

So there you have it folks - why I don't like these "heavily revered" anime. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and this is mine. :P

On a side note, I really thank everyone who continues to recommend me some awesome anime - you guys ROCK!

EDIT: i will admit, however, that I liked the soundtrack in both Darker than Black and Cowboy Bebop (you can see that I gave Bebob a generous rating of 7). Episodic anime like those just aren't for me. I just want a central plot damn it :P

I personally think X/1999 TV (NOT the movie) has one of the best anime soundtracks ever. It's a great series, although it's more aprreciated if you've read the manga as well.

Noir, as someone mentioned, has a fantastic soundtrack although personally the show was too slow for me.

Madoka Magica also had an AMAZING soundtrack and was a great show.
