Mod edit: I guess I'll also add the reminder here; this thread is 1.5 years old! Don't give this person advice, instead you can use the thread to discuss HDD choices.

Well my laptop's 120GB Hard Drive wont do it this time, after finding new Anime to watch, I cant download anything anymore with only 126MB of Hard Drive space left. So my question is which External Hard Drive should I get? I am looking for the most reliable Hard Drive there is, or close to. My price range is around $100 for a 500GB. Any suggestions? I am thinking to get the Fantom Titanium-II 500GB.

You can get a regular 3.5" 500Gb SATA drive and USB/Firewire/eSATA enclosure for around $100, were you so inclined, with 'prefab' ones around the same price now, I guess you could go for something like:

500Gb, black
500Gb Fantom (as you mention)
or 1Tb for a bit more.

All are good options, but for the price I'd go for the WD. I like WD as a brand, and I think the black looks better.

As others have said, buy a regular HD with a case. It's cheaper and it takes like 2 seconds to put the HD in the case.

Oh, and as far as cases go, this has worked well for me.

500Gb drives are ~100, 640 are ~$110, and 750s can be had for around $130. So yeah, an external case and a 640 is probably the best 'cheap' option. $10 more for 140Gb. Bargain. Though formatted capacity of a 640Gb drive is actually like 595Gb. 500Gb drives format to 465ish iirc (don't have any of mine plugged in atm >.>) so consider the formatted capacity overhead when buying.

From the reviews that I read off of the sites, Tigerdirect.ca/amazon.com/newegg.com it says that the hard drives will fail after a week to a few years, and both drives are from Seagate and Western Digital...

So which External Hard Drive Enclosure do you guys think I should get?

I want to buy a 500GB hard drive too. I ask my friend, who is quite good with computer and such, and he told me that Western Digital was a reliable brand (he recommend Maxtor too).

I have a Fantom GreenDrive 1TB that I keep all of my fansubs on.

I got it on special for $100. It's super, super quiet and streams even HD files without any slowdown. It also stays nice and cool, which was a pleasant surprise. I've also got an older Fantom 120GB that I keep my music on. I'm going to need to upgrade soon, though, since it's just about full.

Well if its for anime storage forget that extra eSATA and firewire connections

all you need are the USB 2.0 Ext HDD (the baseline hard drives)
Sure you can get a top of the line 500GB for $100
But if you ditch the extra crap, you can get a 1TB for $100 or even less.

Check on the weekends since 95% of the time, Best Buy, Frys, New Egg, Amazon etc have their sales for the weekend.

Also be warned that like internal HDD's, external's have a chance to "crap out" on you. I have 5 500GB externals. 4 of them work fine, but one of them just straight up died on me. Ruined all my downloads. No big deal though since i was lucky enough to save half of them and get the list of the rest to download later.

Oh and i highly reccomend that you don't keep them connected to your computer 100% of the time because if you have XP or vista, it tends to do checks on the ext HDD's causing them to spin for no apparent reason. The more they spin, the more chances of HDD failure.

Also take into account if it has an external power supply or if its powered through usb. Through my research on various sites, USB only connections have a less failure rate compared to those with an external supply.

The only "reliable" way to store anime is through Optical disks, preferably Blu Ray DVD's. But for obvious reasons, that is not the most cost effective way. And DVD's are cumbersome but the best way.

...Just some ideas from someone experienced with this matter. Sure it was no big deal that i lost over 300+ gigs of anime, but it was still a HUGE pain in the ass. Took me 3 months to get them back since they were mostly slow seeded shows at the time of re-downloading.

Edit: I also forgot to mention i have 5 500GB My Books (Western Digital) The Ages for all of my hard drives are Failure rate is very random since the age of my oldest HDD is 2006 and my newest is 2009. Surprisingly 2nd newest one from 2008 was the one to crap out on me.

ALSO...
If you have money to burn feel free to go ahead and dabble in the Solid State Drives :)

Or even try the USB 3.0 eHDD's

I picked up a LaCie 1TB for $110 (ended up buying a second as a backup drive, incase for whataver reason mine does crap out I won't lose anything :D). Had it for a year and a half and it's run perfectly. I connect it to a Windows PC, my iMac, and my Linux Laptop without any issues. I can also connect it to my PS3 to watch fansubs/movies if needed :D There is no lag/skipping when watching video/listening to music straight from the drive.

My suggestion is whatever make you decide on, if your budget is around $100 you should look for a 1TB drive instead of a 500gb one. Prices on externals have dropped so much in recent years that there are a ton of 1TB drives in the $100-$120 range that are reliable (at least in Canada).

Just a reminder: this thread is 1.5 years old. Now I don't mind a discussion about external HDDs, but don't try to give advice to the OP, who likely moved on at the time. >.>

I'll go ahead and recommend either WD or Maxtor myself, but if you're getting a Internal Drive + External Enclosure, get one with a fan.

I managed a 1.5TB drive + an enclosure for 125$ flat on Black friday last year and haven't had problems with it yet, the fan serves to keep it cool when running.

Another thing, if you find a 5400rpm drive cheaper than a 7200rpm drive for the same GB, go with slower; you're not running an OS off of the thing and you probably don't need the added speed if all you're doing is reading files off it, I can get 125MB/s read off mine, but it is eSATA, and that's faster than USB 2.0.

Why not bump this? this still has pertinent information for someone who actually uses the search.
