Like Wasabi said plot hole or they will pull something out of their ass like someone can foretell or something like that. There was no way they knew the spot and that's A. B would be they had to know ahead of time since they did not show it how, it remains a plot hole for now.

Still can't wait for the explanation of that one.

@Yumekichi11

Thanks! I didn't read what Wasabi said.

I'd like to see how they explain this plot hole. It would be interesting if at the end, Gai was revealed to be a bad guy all along.

Just saying.

"Original" anime my ass. The only unexpected part was the guy actually denying the hand at the end, but that was only because they wanted to be even more generic.

This show was what I expected to be the best of this season. Character design is quite beautiful. Animation is not smooth but special effect is interesting. The design of robots, suits and cockpits is average but the design of the consoles and gadgets is cool. The premise of the world setting and plot are cliche for now. What made me facepalmed/disappointed most is the voice of the singer of the OP: ill-matched to the character design and the character's voice. For example, "Monochrome (fish song)" in the trash anime "Star Driver" was far better.

There is still a lot of stuffs that we don't understand in this anime, but that of course we have only seen 2 episodes.
I love the opening and ending, still love the voice actor for Inori :D

That's pretty much of course that Gai won't give up Shu that easily when he now got king of ability.
That's why Gai make Inori transfering in the same class as Shu.
Even thought Gai didn't knew much about Shu, he even make Shu protecting him, such a good leader.
They eventually become closer later.
Since he still going to school I guess he will get friends.
I have to agreed that Inori is very cute in her school uniform.

This is like... a different side of the same coin of why I dislike Horizon.

:skips explanation of that:

GC is better, but that doesn't say very much. So much of this show seems contrived and rehashed, especially the "Now she's going to your school!" bit at the end. I'm sure the director's intention wasn't to elicit a disappointed sigh.

Not at all surprising, of course, considering the show's premise relies on the demeaning, "I am yours now, Protagonist-sama. It is your duty to pull this weapon out of my chest." Strong female characters!

I don't know what I was expecting with this show, but it's a shame. The animation quality is quite high, and is probably why I haven't dropped it yet.

:files series away into the IS folder:

The OP was gorgeous.
As much as I know I'm going to adore Tsugumi I just had to go WTF at that ecchi scene. Well, I went WTF at all the ecchi scenes really, I'd really hate to see this show go to waste because of that. So hopefully it'll....Limit itself.

Music and animations and shiny explosions are still nice. Rest is still mediocre. Wish they were more serious, I hoped this would be a little darker and gloomier. Bouncing CG A-cups and loli asses don't appeal to me thanks. With cat ears. Uhm...

Second half was pretty good, especially when they let the execution part carry out.

Well I'll probably watch for it's good qualities, just need to turn my brain off.

OP is so-so ED is good.

No complaints here, I'm really enjoying the show so far despite some nit picky things that don't really bother me all that much. I can't wait for the school aspect to kick in. I'm not a big fan of Inori, but I like a majority of the other characters so far and we still haven't met some from the OP.

Hahahaha oh wow this show is such a pile of shit. It's like every over-done concept in an anime mashed together - and poorly, might I add - and painted with shiny colors. 'Hey, let's animate tits and ass but leave an explosion in a still frame!' Also SKEWL HURRDURR. How it pains my soul knowing people are going to be eating this shit up.

Only upsides were Mr. Megane and His Male Cohorts and Blonde Dilandau.

"I belong to you now."

WHY WHY WHY

Updating as I watch it. I'll probably use some suggestive language, it's a live reaction, so chances are, I'll look like a retard at the end.

I'll probably be criticizing this harshly for screwing over my expectations last week. Last week, I really wanted to be swayed by a incredible anime. Instead, I get a geass clone with a shitty male protagonist who manages to contradict human nature. (surmounted guilt over a girl he's known for over an entire minute).
Meh, well here goes.

Oh hey, he manages to deflect missiles due to sheer luck.
Opening, it's by supercell. It's fine I guess, it'll probably grow on me. Bakemonogatari's ED by supercell is pretty much my favorite ED since it's so fucking thematic with that one episode. This opening is pretty good too, I'll wait till the full version's released.
Hoping that the main lead either grows a pair. or develops common sense halfway into the season.
Is the chick masochistic for blushing from pain? Also what type of technology does something as asinine as collateral damage linking the controller and the mecha itself >.<?
Damn, what a cool kid son. At least he'll spice up this linear development.
Why is the chick's apparel similar to that of a hooker's? Lmao seriously, can't take her seriously.
"Aren't you being a bit mean", incoming cliche fucking speech about how she tried her hardest and how he shouldn't be so mean to her.
Bestowed upon the King's power? What an original concept.
Hear that? we all have hidden power that only needs to be converted into Voids.
"Void technology trespasses into the realm of Gods", then why the fuck does everybody have the hidden potential?
Whoa, what an ultimatum, I don't see how he has to. He could easily refuse, I doubt they'll kill him if he does. I mean, he harnesses the ability to use on of the three voids in fucking existence, they worst they could do is guilt trip him. However, due to his lack of common sense, he'll probably accept it.
Nothing says divine intervention then holding a hundred people hostage.
"So work with all you've got"? What type of fucking weak line of encouragement is that? You portrayed yourself as the guy who prefers results over anything else, and you come up with a line that the retarded guy with no common sense could have said?
"I'll knock out a script" As long as it's better than this one.
Oh hey, he does guilt trip him, how original.
Calling dead mother in about five seconds.
Eight seconds, close enough.
Damn, she survived, there goes my prediction.
"Ugh, this "mommy" crap". Agreed, kill the kid too.
Nothing like taking ten seconds to take aim at point fucking blank.
At least they all died together, I think the kids still alive though, watch out he'll probably avenge their deaths in like ten years.
Also, why is that yellow haired guy dressed like that dumb bitch from Deadman Wonderland?
So wait, you use a invisibility cloak to ambush soldiers. But you don't use a knife? Seems like a douche move.
Nothing says amazing technology then being outsped by a van.
"I'm the leader", Who the fuck does this. How is this strategic at all. All this does is raise your damn ego, now they know who you are and how you look like. Why must "strategists" like him constantly make themselves look like retards.
"Survival of the Fittest", Quoting Darwin it seems, this guy seems to be a wonder of natural selection.
"We continue to offer songs of mourning" Coming from the guy who started the attack after they executed them. What fucking valor and truth in that speech, I'm deeply moved.
"We'll shoot you full of holes", Really? those seem like fucking cannons. How does a cannon make you "full of holes"?
Ambiguous lines and an inspirational speech given by none other than the pseudo-hooker. Deeply moved.
Interesting, how does a kid without common sense master an entirely new mechanic on his second try?
Nothing says peaceful song and a ray of hope like massacring an entire platoon of soldiers. Everyone's smiling too, I can deduce they're all sadistic.
Oh hey, he gained common sense! He didn't risk his life to do shit he didn't need to.
Calling transfer student.
Called it.
"This is a joke...right" Yeah, I think it is. Why the fuck isn't she dressed like a hooker?
That repetitive song is growing on me, starting to like it. I can say that the OST is pretty good on this anime, I'm hoping this improves. I probably nitpicked a lot this week, I guess I don't like being disappointed by pilots.
Oh well, decent episode 3.5/4. I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more if the first episode wasn't so disappointing, or if I didn't nitpick every error possible. Oh well.

What the hell, I'm not one to complain about the occasional fanservice scene, but when they're this frequent and obnoxious, it really cheapens the show -__-

i still like the show.. but putting it in a NoitaminA slot seems to not do it a favor here in MAL forums.. anyway, what i can say for this show for now is that I don't mind the cliches and fanservice (they're always good to my eyes.. especially with that nekomimi loli in tights), because i can always just blame the fact that i've watched too many.. but seeing some plotholes and rushed sequences in this episode in a way that is not presented coherently definitely nerfed my overall liking for the show.. but it's a 22 episode show anyway and all the girls are hawt..

Ok i felt i had to say this but i think people are making way to big of a deal on the fanservice, ecchi scenes, i mean sure it wasn't needed but if you think about it didn't Code Geass which so many people are comparing this too have the exact same thing with the camera angles and such when they were piloting their mecha (and I'm sure there was plenty of other examples but that was the one that came to my mind.) point being almost every show in this genre has some form of fanservice, and from what I've heard it was written by the people who did Highschool of the dead along with Code Geass so its not that surprising considering the type of anime HOTD is that they sneak scenes like that in (which were really not that long, i don't even think all of them add up to a minute). Now as for the actual episode i thought it was really good, did it blow my mind... no but i considered it really good, the episode never left me bored and before i knew it, it was over. As for the Kaleidoscope topic on how they knew, Gai knew the second he saw the guy which makes me believe that he knew from a while back, how he knew might even be explained next episode for all we know so them "pulling it out of the ass" on the first few episodes as some have said is a bit off don't you think? The school scene was cliche and unoriginal but as i recall Code Geass also had the school topic and to a lesser extent so did Death Note (note when i mean school i don't mean the transfer heroine but rather that school played a role, for the transfer heroine there are so many examples i don't think i really need to mention one right?) and both are considered (for the general norm) serious and solid anime. While on that topic for the originality, everything CANNOT be original i mean really... i don't know what people expect amazing anime to be but with all the anime that there's been original and i mean TRULY original is becoming a rarity but maybe its just me, since its not like I've seen all that much but from what i have seen i have noted that everything takes from something else that's just how it is. Another thing I've noticed is that everyone is hating on Shu, now is he a great character no... is he Shinji Ikari bad... not yet (and unless a meltdown occurs most likely never will be), but my point is there is another way to look at this, lets say after that scene at the end of episode one that he turned into a badass like Gai who is receiving all kinds of good reception would that really be realistic? people don't change in a split second and its unreasonable to think that way, they way they did it was actually better in my opinion because they made it seem like he got caught up in the moment before calming down and reacting like he did when the second mecha attacked him. So my criticism will hold on Shu for now considering the development possibilities are still there since his past holds a lot of promise, and its my theory but I'm very confident on the idea that Inori and Gai know him from before but we will see.Well anyway it was a solid episode like i mentioned and i think the hype that this show has is making peoples expectations unrealistic and thus leaving them disappointed, if they step back a bit I'm sure they will see it's been a solid show which has the potential to be great, we are only on episode 2 after all... you shouldn't give the verdict either way yet good or bad... Oh lastly i do agree with one thing that almost everyone i read wrote and that is that OP and animation is simply amazing, truly awesome. Can't wait till the next episode

Also, as good as some of it's OST, that's probably the worst Opening I've seen this season.

I really doubt that the explanation will be that shitty.

Void technology has yet to be explained and it's clearly going to be a major plot point later. You might as well complain about how we still don't know how Undertaker stole the King's Power genome from Sephirah Genomics, why the mysterious virus/biological weapon was only unleashed on the Japanese, why Shu only uses Inori's void, or where the two other King's Power genomes are.

As for my speculation, I suspect that the Endclaves are at least partially based on Void technology. If the Endclaves are based on Void technology, then the Void of their pilot might give some sort of benefit to the Endclave. For example, Daryl's Endclave might get an anti-laser shield.

The relationship between Inori and Shu thus far reminds me of Eureka and Renton, idk. I wouldn't be surprised to see similar developments in their relationship (not a bad thing). Inori is love <3

I see potential in Shu's development, hope he won't be such a pussy later on.

Shu: Are you for real?

I could have done without the fanservice but some of yall being a little over dramatic about it. It was a pretty good episode, i like the ED and i yeah some things are cliche but its too early to tell as far as the story goes. Overall 4/5 based on the strength of action as of right now. We'll see in the following episodes.

EDIT:I'll add that this episode made me think about just how much more bad ass Gai would have been if it was him with that power.

@Silent_Scream

I think you're kind of missing the point of the critics' opinions. Personally it's not that I'm saying there's more fanservice than other animes - it's simply that I'm disappointed that there's fanservice at all - period. Personally, I was hoping that this would be a serious, thought-provoking anime either completely devoid of this kind of cheap audience grabber or at least do it tastefully - i.e. subtle.

I do know that there are those less-serious scenes like the one where Tsugumi is tinkering with some sort of hologram just like from Iron Man but to be overly reacting just because of that? It's just people are over-reacting or to an extent being obviously biased against a show they've decided to diss off right before it has even aired. And to like other anime which has the same dark tone which offers those scenes while criticizing this one's attempts to do so is just being a jerk.

You also do know, that even Steins;Gate (which is an anime I like) though it is dark and morbid has also its share of otaku-gags and fanservice scenes as well.

I didn't really buy it from the first episode, but now I really do feel Code Geass vibes from Guilty Crown. They just separated the strategist and the supernatural ability into two separate characters. Personally, I'm loving it. I was rather taken aback by the twist at the end. It felt like such a given that Shu would join their ranks and I was completely baffled by the fact that he didn't. I'm sure it won't last very long, but still, nice touch.

Once again, I reiterate - it's a matter of taste. Steins; Gate was very successful in it's "fanservice" IMO because it was tastefully done (once again IMO). Whenever something resembling an "otaku-gag/fanservice" appeared it was quickly lampshaded by Itaru. This was all good based on the recurring idea that - HEY THIS IS WHAT THESE CHARACTERS DO!. Itaru is defined by his pervertedness so it fits him perfectly that he's the "That's what she said" guy. Even Kirisu's 2chan tendencies were purposely mixed in to reveal more about her complex character -She's a prodigal girl genius who enjoys memes a LOT. This element helps some viewers identify/relate with the character and expands our understanding of her personality. She isn't just a walking vj. These are important to the plot because they directly relate to the characters.

WHEREAS: In other anime like HOTD and apparently Guilty Crown, fanservice is just that - shallow, no depth or character relevance. What's worse, it's just flopping tits and waving ass - crude at best. I just hope future episodes won't do the same thing...

I do agree with what you have stated but it's just that Guilty Crown's fanservice isn't as blatant enough as HOTD in which a usual anime viewer (someone who watches anime for fun) wouldn't mind or wouldn't even have noticed. It's just like others have already mentioned before; people are just over-reacting.

Also, putting Guilty Crown and HOTD in the same category is quite harsh.

I agree its really not an excuse to really go overboard with hatred to that degree just for a few scenes. Its a little over the top for a couple of scenes of this anime that last 22 episodes. I didn't like it myself but im not going to go bat shit and throw the anime into the joke category nor say its not a serious show because of it. Time will tell but a little it here and their doesn't affect the overall deal unless it becomes a crutch.

not a fan of the 'fanservice'. My mum was washing the dishes behind me when i was watching this. I was so nervous. Plz, don't mix ecchi with serious shows, keep it in animes thats meant to be ecchi. It lets me know which anime I can watch on my TV or not :S

3/5

Such a shame. I really liked the first ep too... :S

[Agreed!]

I'm not saying I'm overboard with hatred. I am simply disappointed - a lot lol. For some people, the amount of fanservice is alright and passable - fine. I, on the other hand, was caught off guard. I was looking to find an anime with grim undertones and seriousness and Guilty Crown seemed to be a perfect candidate - an Anime set in a post-pandemic burnt country oppressed by cool looking multinationals with happy trigger fingers. I was hoping for these themes: Serious, grim, and thrilling on a level of sophisticated dystopic adventure. If you're going to make an anime set in a futuristic grim situation - stick to it! Don't go messing up the plot with crude comedic relief - it doesn't do anything for the plot but make it a joke.

You're right, it's just a few scenes and but this carries a lot of implications:

1) It's only EPISODE 2 and there are 20 so episodes left: Setting this kind of Fanservice tone right off the bat doesn't inspire much confidence to continue watching (Insatiable quality nazis who demands - though not unreasonably - excellent story-telling, character development/depth, pacing and consistency.
2) Characterization + Tone: It's hard to take these characters seriously when fanservice comes into play. Go from badass to snicker material in 0.5 seconds. From a serious mech-battle to heaving chests (Some have mentioned "Hey, it's cause she's out of breath/injured!" I agree with observation that while this explanation is all well and good, the scene was unreasonably long (IMO Disagreeable stylistic choice). Once again, so redundant, it's a matter of preference. I'm the kind of guy who craves a story where the audience can either sympathize with the characters on a deeper level or admire them for more refined qualities than basic physical attraction.

Ahh.. I'm kinda disappointed by this anime... and the unnecessary fanservices...
and here I thought noitamina would "expand beyond typical young male demographic"
sigh...

Well, at least I still got RedJuice's art and Supercell's music

The way Shu blocked missiles explosion from the back made me thought of strike witches.

OP sequence at the beginning looks like Steins; Gate's, and seems like a direct rip off from Code Geass R2's near the end of the OP.

Fan service is kind of expected; it's redjuice after all. You guys should know =) I just hope there'll be more character developments in the future, especially with Gai and Inori. Shu can go die in ditch at this rate -_-

Facts? Are you seriously telling people to stop stating their opinions and use facts instead?
<img src="http://animediet.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/g00Facepalm.jpg"; alt="g00Facepalm.jpg" />

You do know that opinions should be backed with facts, unless you want to look like a retard.

There is no such thing as fact when we are talking about subjective things. Fact: this episode had a considerable amount of fanservice (okay this is a bit faulty: in comparison to the number of similiar shows I've watched, might not apply with a bigger sample, and have to define exactly what i compare it to). So let's just say it had fanservice. that is fact.

Opinion is that fanservice doesn't belong to a show like this. It would be better if they avoided it or did it in a tasteful fashion. That is my opinion.

There is no such thing as using one over the other, they apply to different things. Of course opinions are based or formed around facts, you can't have an opinion about nothing, maybe that is what you were getting at.

To quote TotalBiscuit: It's okay not to like things, but don't be a dick about it
(No, arguing about it in the episode discussions isn't being a dick about it.)

I am also not a hypocrite saying that i don't like fanservice in this show simply because I've watched and maybe enjoyed others that had it. I just don't think it matches the otherwise serious and dark tone of this one series. I like milk with my cookies but i don't like milk with watermelon.

Tl;dr: you are wrong^^

This episode was decent and all, but wtf. According to the character info on this site, Shu and Gai are both 17. Gai's like a foot taller.

Wow!~ Gai has so must trust in Shu don't you think? And l like how Shu declined his offer, more creative that way and it suits his character i suppose, its kinda hard for someone to change within a day or two.....

finally caught up with the guys that watched the special~ probably

Nice second episode. I'd be pretty freaked out to find myself wielding a giant sword with ease, then being attacked by a mech, and then stumbling both backwards and up in the air at the same time. Looks like we'll get a variety of different weapons, which is cool. Glad they didn't dwell on the whole void-pulling scenes this time, either.

Seems that whoever's void that Shu is using, that person is rendered unconscious during the duration of the weapon's use? If so, that could be a double-edged sword. I mean Inori was in danger since she wasn't able to defend herself or run in the first episode but, in this episode, the guy controlling a mech wouldn't be a threat at all (not that anyone was a threat with Gai's Awesomeness by Analysis ability there).

And to add to the TV Tropes reference, I'm hating that new Blood Knight character. Just absolutely unlikable for me, especially his carefree smile after the things he does or says.

All I know, is haters are hating.
Fan service is servicing fans.
And Supercell is awesome.

Other than that, I have to say I don't really like the fan service, especially the way it's done. It adds a cheap feeling to an otherwise great anime. Then again, at the beginning of Code Geass R2 had a Kallen ass-shot (IN A BUNNY SUIT) within the first ten minutes. It's not horrible, but when you combine it with how serious they're taking the anime, it just feels extremely out of place.

Also, the skin tight suits aren't any worse than the suits in Code Geass, or Evangelion, or IS, or any other mech pilot in anime.

Also, to everyone calling "PLOT HOLE", it's not a plot hole if the story has not finished yet. If they do not explain it by the end of the anime, THEN it's a plot hole, but you cannot call it that while they're still going to explain it. (It's fairly obvious they will, they blatantly showed that they knew what the weapon was before they executed their plan, so of course they're going to explain it.)
"Evidently... There's no such thing as 'meaning' in this world. But that in itself is wonderful... isn't it? Since if there isn't a set meaning, then you can just find one on your own."

Tired too lazy to quote but being the fan service original starter I have to say that echan12101992 resumed what I did not point out. It's not the problem of it being there it's how it is done. In your face is certainly the wrong way. In this show at least that is how I see it.

Why is no one thinking that this anime is similar to demonbane:
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=1067
there is like so much similarities like the mecha theme and all. Not the design but the fact it's there as an element.
