I think this is an alternate ending as I'm pretty sure Otonashi returned to the real world as he notices Kanade in the real world humming Iwasawa's song. I'm guessing that Otonashi is waiting for Kanade to return to the afterlife world so they could be together again. Just like what the programmer of Angel Player tried to do, he was waiting for his loved one to come back. |

In fact I think they rushed some elements way too much, like TK.Other ending is waaaay better as it's happy. This could be for those who didn't like the other one. How is it not realistic? He, like everyone else, fulfilled his unfulfilled desire and thus he had no more reason to stay there other than to specifically be unhappy. I could have seen him possibly staying there if Kanade had also decided to stay, but she didn't in this version either. The two people at the very end are also very heavily implied to be our two main characters if i am remembering right. |

That was also my assumption first but something that Otonashi said to this blond-haired guy made me think differently. Taken from a subbed version: Otonashi: ... come to the student council room. I'll always (zutto) be waiting there. This word "always" and the statement of one the students that "Otonashi was waiting for someone" indicate -for me at least- that he sticked to his goal in wanting to help new students to move on and that he will never leave this world and go on like the others did. Maybe I'm just interpreting too much. I think your version is the rightest!!! It is most possible that this is Otonashi's intention!!! SUPPORT YOU TOTALLY!!!! |

hmmm it was a good ova (short) but good ^^' as for otonashi staying behind, i agree he might have stayed behind for a while but he eventually passed on himself....hence the rushed ending for ep 13 where he meets up w/kanade. it would have been nice if this ova was included in the acutal series. but there's also this: http://www.korosu-anime.com/2010/12/angel-beats-interview-with-maeda-jun.html and the author himself said that otonashi moved on as well considering his personality & out-look on life itself. and there is some confirmation of a second season but w/an entirely new cast =.=' and for the "waiting" statement, he might have been waiting for another person to continue on his work of helping others fulfill their unfulfilled goals and pass on happily. not kanade, cause she has no reason to come back. it would be pointless, since she met up with otonashi, the one who provided her his heart. she just wanted to meet him and thank him and she later on came to love him as well. after that she passed on, before he did. either way, i'm looking forward to a second season.....hopefully it won't be a repeat of the first. |

But, I don't get how the second season will have an all new cast when Yuri says she'll be the main heroine... |

S-s-second season? That's always welcomed, but with a new cast? A bit iffy. Although Maeda Jun himself spoke that Otonashi disappeared afterwards, I believe this short episode is set after episode 13, and it is a prologue to the second season. I am assuming the second season will be centered around Otonashi as the successor of Kanade, minus the angel part, and the blonde guy as the protagonist. |

I kinda lose 2 minutes or so of my life. I don't see the point of making this OVA, i didn't like. Only the thing i liked was when Otonashi talked about Yue, Yurippe and that other pink-haired girl from the band while showing the places where they used to be, like the footbal camp and Yurippe's office. <3 |

for 2min40 secs long- i loved it. very dramatic and heavy- esp the line that hes waiting for someone its sad, because kaede and his friends will never be able to come back to the world the "next stage" line fits well, as it alludes to either a 2nd season, or simply that this OVA's world (where otonashi is president) IS the next stage, thus concluding the series. i personally saw this series potential for epicness if it was a full 24/26 eps. it was a letdown, but it was a solid ride |

I think "he's waiting for someone" Means, he's waiting his replacement, someone who's capable of helping others like he did. Yup, that must be it, when he did find someone, (Presumably the blonde dude), he'll leave for Kanade. If I'm right, then we'll have a season 2 of Angel Beats with Otonashi as the angel and as the hated one. |

i think that Otonashi didn't dissapear because at the last ep, it just shows him shouting Kanade.. if you zoom on the last scene, there was some ball of light goes up from there and i think that was Kanade's soul.. and you will see that theres a person still on the stairs... even it just like a black dot, you can see that clearly and i think that was Otonashi maybe this is wishful thinking, but there will be 'Next Stage' |

Alternate ending, as befits an anime in disguise as a VN rather than the other way around. Likewise, the (completely redundant) Stairway to Heaven OVA ended with the words "Bad Ending". One thing though: In the translation of Angel Beats episode 13 I watched there was no disambiguous statement about Kanade having died at all. As I understood it, she was "not supposed to be there", but could very well be doing a Fuuko/Ayu trick and have wandered errounously into the World After during a coma following her heart transplant. Thus, she is the only one in the cast being able to reappear in the real world as herself (she just wakes up), while everyone else are DEAD (face it, people) and need to reincarnate in a body different to their previous one to re-enter the world. The scene concluding episode 13 ends just a fraction of a second before Otonashi's hand reaches Kanade, making it possible that it would just pass through her body if we were able to continue watching. And to everyone hoping for a second season: This is a KEY story, the ending is supposed to be sad and leave you wanting more. This is not Code Geass. This OVA alludes as much to a second season of Angel Beats as the Kyuo Chapter alluded to a third season of Clannad. |

It has also been conformed that there won't be a second season. So far i haven't seen a confirmation that there will be no second season ... and i put that interview on site not as confirmation but as a guess for second season... and if there will be a second season it would most definitely have a new cast because the old one passed on ... and only one who could still be there would be Otonashi but he to according to Maeda Jun passed on ... so that leaves us with this Another Epilogue character which most possibly would be the main Protagonist. |

I think it's more of a case of Otonashi staying behind to guide others for as long as he sees necessary. After all, did he not suggest that exact thing to Kanade? That's not to say he'll stay there forever, his portrait did disappear in the credits and Maeda Jun said he moved on. Like others suggested, I'd say he's waiting for a successor, Kanade moved on, chances are next to zero of her returning (like the guy with the computers for the NPCs explained about the love of the guy who invented Angel Player). But also I think the ending of episode 13 was either an imagining of life together between the two just like Yui had, or it happens after this OVA. When Otonashi says he'll wait forever for the blonde guy to approach him, I think that means he has business with him, not that he's going to sit there forever. |

Have any of you guys realised that the show kind of goes full circle? (well at least it repeats the same idea). The one who originally designed the angel program was as described in the show, somebody like Otonashi who had reached fufillment in his life, but wandered in due to a case of amnesia. He was waiting for the one he loved - but in the end began to lose his sanity and turned himself into a NPC. Now Otonashi in this ending is the one waiting for Kanade to return. The whole idea of her returning is the idea of reincarnation which is present throughout the whole series. We see it in the bit after the credits in Ep 13 - where the 2 of them presumably meet in another life. Whether or not that happens I don't know. To be honest I think they just put it in to have a nice, happy ending in case they weren't guaranteed a second season. THIS epilogue I think, is however them covering all bases in case they were recommissioned. I'm a bit confused about the time events in this (it doesn't really make much sense) - Otonashi dies and Kanade inherits his heart, but she was there long before him. My understanding is also that she was in some form of coma, and actually alive back in the real world - i.e. in the last episode she talks about how her heart was beating etc. Argh it's a bit confusing. In the end I actually like this ending better. We never see Otonashi actually disappear from that world (the bit after the credits of Ep 13 is too vague). I think he should've stayed. I like the bitter-sweetness to it. In a way it fits with his character and the whole show. Wow that was unnecessarily long. |

Personally I don't think he is waiting for Kanade, though I do think she will return. Her regret will be not being able to meet Otonashi in the next life so she will probably return. I also think they will use this time to make Otonashi's sister come to this world. I also hope they use this season to flash back on a few of the last seasons members deaths. Yuri's in particular would be a good one to expand upon. |

This blond guy looked like Edward Erlic kinda;p And yeah.Remember the dude in guild? He said that his creator turned himself to NPC because he could not stand weiting for his love in normal form xD So in this ending we have Otonashi who weit for his love and decided to weit for her. My question is.Is he that person about I wrote above or he just repeated his doings? If he is that person it does not make sense, for it could be like prequel-then he appear in normal series as non memory guy, join organization and finaly meet angel(person that he gave his heart and which he love) They would give this bonus without reason so yeah I think there is more to it.o.O @up ''Think about it guys, Otonashi must have disappeared after episode 13 of Angel Beats, because when Kanade thanked him, he finally knew that his life had meant something. I doubt he could have any other regrets. Also, the last part of episode 13 means they must have met in their next life.'' He had regrets about his sister. He mentioned it.-I only gave her manga to read nothing more to get her health(ofc because of that he started study medicine)but what left is the thing that she died on his shoulders because he took her from hospital and he also did not tell it to angel when she asked if he do not regret anything-he responded yes but he thought about sth else that kept him in afterlife world:P @up2 ''Well either way we know that the time-flow in the purgatory isn't linear. I mean Otonashi came into the world of the purgatory after Kanade died. And we know she died sometime after Otonashi since he gave her his heart.'' So yeah sth is wrong and my thoughts are right: if he died first and then gave his heart to kanade so why she was first in afterlife and then he appeared? He could be THAT creator turned into npc and put himself so as to be with kanade(but without memories) Or mb he just stayed to assign new council to continue his work so as to he could dissapear and meet kanade,or he weit for kanade being killed again and meet him there. And yeah kanade could be in coma. I would be sad if they make 2season,for this ending one was great. to all ppl that think first ending was to candy I have to disagree.Otonaschi had sad life without any happienes or improvements. And after giving heart and founding love he gained it so he truly deserve for life after life!!! I just discovered sth.She COULD be in coma, for in opening an person(angel)is playing piano and soul went into her(I know that this yellow light is soul, for later on many of this lights flow in air)so that at end of series that soul return to her body in coma.but still how she could be earlier in series than him if he gave her his heart!!! mb her sould wandered afther otonashi came to this world and then her soul entered to angel bodyo.o |

Does no-one else think that the guy Otonashi is helping after he regains self-thought could actually be the guy that became an NPC? He could've been an NPC the entire time just as the guy sitting in the room has been there the whole time. Now Otonashi has found him due to his outburst. |

He should have done the same that Hinata and Yui did if he wanted to see her. He help them give that step, but he wasn't strong enough to give it himself. robbin92 said: Does no-one else think that the guy Otonashi is helping after he regains self-thought could actually be the guy that became an NPC? That is an interesting idea, but what troubles me the most is that apparently Otonashi is making the same mistake the NPC dude made. Is he going to wait forever? and if he is willing to do that, who long can he keep it together before going insane? I guess that by giving purpose to his actions he will be fine for a while but still maybe things will repeat the same way they did with Afterlife Battlefront. |

I think this is more of a "what if he stayed behind" sort of thing. Remember the story that dude in the computer room told Yuri? The God was one who had amnesia, forgetting that he had a fulfilling life so he ended up living in this world waiting for someone he loved. There was a 1% chance he was going to be able to see her again but he grew impatient and turned himself into an NPC. To avoid any of this happening in the future, he programmed into the world the shadow monster to turn anyone who loves into an NPC in order to avoid people suffering from what he suffered. Otonashi happens to be the "second generation" of this scenario, hinted by the NPC's in this episode saying he's waiting for someone. Also, in the actual series he himself had stated he had amnesia and forgot that he lived a fulfilling life. Although I think this as highly unlikely the real story, it IS possible. I really hope there is a second season. |

I dunno, but this might actually have been better than the actual series itself, given some contemplation about the flaws in the series. I mean, this was too short to even have time to display any flaws. ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌ Also Vento said: Yeah, I'd like that. Why don't they just make a visual novel out of Angel Beats already? xD They had a 'bad end' in the previous OVA and now they had an 'alternate ending' here too. |

I enjoyed this epilogue. It gave me a better peace of mind than the other OVA did. I personally think this is an alternate ending to the original story."What if he stayed?" is the question that this segment tried to answer. I could see it as taking place before Otonashi meeting Kanade in real life, but I'll interpret the two endings as different continuities. |

Really liked the OVA. But i have another idea on the backstory behind it. Yeah it would make sense that it is an alternate ending, but it could also be a possible new beginning. At the end of the final episode it shows a boy that looks like Otanashi running into Angel in the real world. Could it be possible that this takes place in the future after they meet in the real world? If they were in a relationship, and Otanashi died prematurely again, he would probably wait in the afterlife until she died herself. It would explain why he would be waiting for someone. Thus, he would pass on lost souls like the blonde guy until Angel finally came to be with him forever. |

The internet reports things as spinsoffs or alternative endings but I wonder If they actually get this from fact or if its an personal opinon. Take for example the To-love-ru manga, the internet reported To-love-ru darkness as a spinoff series but as far as Ican see its an continuation. Baisically the internet isnt allways right. Given the fact that the students quoted the exact same thing as the guy in the 2nd computer room(he is waiting for someone), I'm thinking Otanashi is the creator. I think his cold attitude was a front similair to how angels attitude was to begin with, perhaps to protect himself from the sadness as he moves people on. Perhaps he waiting for angel or perhaps its someone else. He didnt leave yet because he likes to help people and wanted to stay behind. He arrived after angel because his character is set to cycle (due to insanity) and reamerged after her. He said that he lived to hear people say thankyou, so it makes sense that he would lwait to be thanked for his final gift, his heart. Through out the series he seemed like a special character; unusual memory loss, surviving to the last momment during any mission and even the other characters admitting they they felt that he was special. The flash forward in the last episode of the tv series may be at a later date as others have mentioned (bleach did a filler type thingy like that) and this ova could be sandwhiched in before that happened. Or perhaps the ova was to show the cycle before rebirth after the tv end but this seems unlikley. He is definatley dead as he donated his heart. As for the other characters perhaps they were in commas (that would be nice. Besides Otanashi non of the characters were actually shown to have died). Not really sure what to beleave there. If they were really all dead I would like to think that that flash forward at the end was an reincarnation at some point but who knows where on the timeline. I would also like to think Yui's flash forward was also an reincarnation but that is a gip to be paralized in multiple lifetimes. |
