| Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Serious giant intergalactic wars with millions of casualties and the occasional gory shot of people being seriously ripped apart, serious politics and strategy with intriguing tricks and schemes, serious drama with seriously shocking twists and turns, serious tea drinking with brandy, serious historical and ethical musings, and finally some serious foppery and whim with funny lines and jokes about drinking, womanizing and turning 30. Pure serious awesomeness. Oh, and try the Berserk manga too. |

| gotta second Legend of the Galactic Heroes also recommending: Banana Fish Emma: A Victorian Romance Fantastic Children (has children characters but is by no means a childish show) Terra e...(the TV series, not the movie, the movie just isn't as good) Infinite Ryvius Area 88 OVA (not the TV series, I hear it's not as good but I also can't say for sure that it's equally as serious as the OVA) |
| Ergo Proxy - Post-environmental disaster, Anti-utopia/mystery with lots of references in existentialism and the humanities. Flag - War/photography anime with some mecha. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade - Special forces-type soldier haunted by young terrorist's memory gets mired in local military politics and the girl's sister. Shigurui - very methodical and bloody samurai anime. Planetes - Drama/comedy about Space Garbagemen. I don't think there's a single person in this show under 20, so it's more serious by default. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - Drama that shoots for realism about the aftermath of an earthquake. Claymore - no one is cutesy in this show. Has kinda a lame anime-only ending though (the manga is still going). Koi Kaze - a more serious look at incest Gunslinger Girl - okay people may dispute this one because it's full of little girls but they're generally emotionlessly shooting people instead of going "oniii-chan" all day long. You have none of the Ghost in the Shell franchise. Dude, why aren't you watching the new Black Lagoon OVA? You gave the first two seasons such good marks. |
| Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (manga) - Starts out as the kind of manga that you apparently dislike. Then, about halfway through, the story takes a very, very dark turn. Then it gets even darker, to the point that it makes even Death Note seem light-hearted by comparison.
