The usual annoyance for a special episode; a completely unrelated story is stuck in the beginning just to increase the running time. The monk's warning to Conan and Heiji was pretty interesting, though since they're so reliant on words to show how clever they are, deliberately basking in the spotlight whenever they solve a crime. I can't believe a series that won't allow its hero to have any flaw but petty arrogance would ever have this come back to bite him, though.

Even after all this time the sexism in this series manages to surprise me. After it's revealed the fairly feminine "boy" was actually a girl her voice gets even higher and she starts jabbering , cooing, and shrieking like every teenage girl character in this show and despite being introduced as a detective there to solve the mystery (although that's a lie) she doesn't do anything but stand around. Doesn't make her cover story seem very credible.

The earring thing struck me as strange. Couldn't she get away with pretending to be from a school that allows it?

The whole explanation of the motivation and method of the crime also took way too long.

Aside from that, this was actually quite decent (The first one is a while, too). A suicide mistaken for murder is a fairly interesting background and the thief and butler provided interesting complications on it. Its also interesting that it manages to get away from its crowd-pleasing convenient moralism to depict police hounding an innocent person to their death.

What would have made it great is if the culprit had actually been an occasional character earlier in the series. It wouldn't be too hard to believe that these high-school detective types might take an interest in each other and occasionally cross paths.

An ok special, I too don't like how they always have a short case at the beginning. The monk's attitude was off too. I understand wanting to hide it from the kid but he intentionally mocked him and tried to pass him off as a liar even went as far as to call back the famous detective just to show how wrong he is again. Which of course in this anime always leads to their demise.

The rest of the case was above average. I liked how all the people fit in, the motive was a little different than normal. But the murdered person never suffers or knows the truth, they're always killed off fast.

Never noticed that but it is interesting.

I don't think there's a school in Japan that would allow that. And even then she already said her school was very strict with her uniform and hair. Iit's often shown(though I don't know how true it is) even in Detective Conan that naturally light haired students are often warned about their hair color. One anime even had the school ask the student to dye her hair to fit in since it could distract students. It's probably not that bad but they are strict on their rules.

I was happy to have a 2 hour special with Heiji. I missed him. He should be in all the episodes.

Heiji/Shinichi is my OTP but now I ship Heiii/Hakuba too.

I have a feeling that Koshimizu will show up again sometime.

Hakuba got owned in the end, made way too many assumptions about Heiji. The first case was forgettable.

That said this did not need to be a 2 hour special. A simple 2 or 3 parter would have still been fine.

Can someone explain how the corrosion of the nails would prove the little girl's innocence? The detective's statement can be found 1:22:33 into the anime. My guess is that due to the nails having been bisected a few weeks after the suicide, there would be less evidence of corrosion on the nails. But can someone even determine when the nails were split from the corrosion alone? Specifically, is there a notable difference in corrosion between a nail that is exposed to the elements before and after a few weeks have passed?

That old monk in the first case was an absolute prick driving that poor woman to commit suicide like that. What might have been a touching reunion between mother and child devolved into a senseless tragedy. But well, at least he knew it, and his warning about the power of words reminded me of one of my favorite scenes from early Naruto, at the end of the Zabuza arc, where Zabuza cries, telling Naruto how his words hurt him more than any blade ever could.

Suicide was also a huge factor in the second case, and just as senselessly tragic. Ever since they showed that poor girl jump at the beginning I knew the killer's motive would be avenging her. And that idiotic detective got what he deserved. It also served as a reminder of just how amazing it is that Shinichi and Heiji never accidentally accuse the wrong person. I didn't expect that young woman to be the culprit though. Sad to see her life ruined. :( On a lighter note I did love Ran's blushing and fanning to cool herself down when the prospect of seeing Shinichi again came up. XD Plus Conan blushing while looking at her near the beginning. XD I also wish we coulda seen Kogorou giving that fisherman those five or six judo flips! XD

That was really intense. I had a feeling that the girl was the murderer ever since she got startled by the thunder, as if she had forgotten something. I knew that she was somehow linked to the previous Lavender murder case. Ah, it's too bad that this case was so short. It could have been much more intense.

Can someone please clarify why the culprit says at the end that they would like to go back to the days in which they used boku*? I'm not quite understanding this so I'd appreciated the help. Thanks!

*Boku is exclusive to males and is used to refer to oneself. Translation - Me, My, I, etc

woow, i wast expecting this. When it's mentioned there will be two more top detectives from south and north, i was like "heey why not, finally some more important characters like Hattori Heiji will be introduced". And i very much liked the idea of these top detectives labelled with respect to the regions they live.

It is very common to see these kind of labels in the anime, that are assigned to important anime characters. Like characters ranking from 0 to 10, characters according to element types, planets etc. And some of them are always introduced later in the shows. Think about Sailor Saturn from sailor moon, or Coyote Starrk from Bleach. So, it was a good idea for Detective Conan too, to introduce top detective characters from each region: West, East, North, South.

However, as soon as i saw the characters introduced in the boat, i was like "hey they definitely don't look like recurring characters to me". I mean, i sensed it, it shouldn't be that hard if you are an average anime fan. But still, I didn't think one of them would be murdered and the other one would be the killer. Because if it would, then the idea of the best-detective-in-every-region would be invalid. Therefore when they found him, I didn't want to believe he died at first, i thought they wouldn't kill an important character like this so quickly, he should be faking it. But it really was happened. He is killed at the episode he is introduced. And the detective of the south is gone too. So at the end, no more new clever detectives.. im a bit disappointed.

At this point, i argue that this show needs two more new detectives in those regions, like Heiji Hattori. And it would be great if at least one of them would turn out to be a villain, a BO member trying to corner Conan. Hope to see something like this in the later episodes..

Only watched the latter half of this episode. I don't really regret it... Lol. I'd only planned to watch this for Hakuba Saguru but the case turned out to be pretty fun.

After so long, Heiji my man is back!! for 2 hrs! that was a pretty solid case. The first one was not that much but the second.. was awesome! All High school detectives gathered in one place to play a 'game' by nichiTV, unfortunately, it was all a setup.
The one dude other than the victim is the one in the episode where Kaito also gathered all the famous detectives, right?

that was rad. I hope to watch another ep like this in the future

Man, they brought in Shinichiro Miki just to play a one-off character? When I heard his voice I thought he'll be a recurring character or at least the culprit, but not the victim.

love the episode yadah yadah BUT ANYONE, JUST ANYONE, WHAT DID HAKUBA SAGURU MEANT when hattori said "In your head, does being a thief automatically equate to him being the culprit?" THEN SAGURU SAID IN HIS MIND "That's how it is for me.." WHILE HAVING KAITO KID AS THE BG, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, WHAT DO U MEAN, WHY IS HE SUDDENLY THINKING OF ANOTHER CHARACTER 'UNNECESSARILY', CAUSE IF NOT, IT SEEMS TO INDICATE HE IS KAITO KID HIMSELF BUT WE KNOW HE'S THE REAL HAKUBA SO WHY IS KAITO IN THE PIPC AAAAAAAAAAAA

I think the only problem I have with the first case is that it doesn't matter if the Monk doesn't want the younger Monk to find out that the woman who committed suicide is his mother, Once he tells the story to the Police, the Police will have to tell him anyway, making the whole cover up pointless.

As for the second case I did enjoy it but I do feel bad for the Female detective that committed the murder, the other Detective that solved was killed honestly kinda deserved it as he let an innocent woman die, thanks to making the wrong deduction and making the suicide case a murder case.

It always kills me how nonchalant they are when someone is murdered. Not even taking a second to grief, immediately starting to inspect the place out. Like I'd get it if they didn't know the victim at all but they knew the guy for a bit lol. The lack of emotion is something always missing in Conan. Hattori leaving his hat on the ship was pretty smart though so kudos on him, and Kazuha for figuring out his message.
