Frankly speaking, I don't think that being an "Anime Tourist" is necessarily bad, because everyone starts there at some point. Some bad takes, some misunderstandings, or poor guidance are part of building your experience as an anime fan in general. This topic came into my mind due to two videos, if you are familiar with these guys:

TheAnimeMan (Joey):

TheAnimeMen:

These people whom accuse of the other people "tourists" are just the people whom cannot accept the fact that everyone is different and everyone has different opinion.

Nobody likes posers (those who know very little about something, but act like they are an expert on the subject) in any field, but they are definitely not a problem for me. Just ignore them and that's it))

At the same time, it's very funny when ordinary casuals or just people with a different opinion are called "tourists"))

The only people who I see calling people tourists generally are people who only watch ecchi and loli who get really upset when people call them out for supporting pedophilic art, and hardcore elitists that think that people who only watch whatever they think is slop (it depends on the person but you might hear shonenslop, shoujoslop thrown around) aren't real fans.

People who consider themselves to be Anime Elitists need to learn what grass is.

Ngl, I feel like "tourist" is just a buzzword these days for anyone who criticizes animanga (or Japanese tropes in general). I'm 100% confident those who use that term aren't even Japanese.

If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

It's kind of cringe to blow this "tourism problem" out of proportion.

Honestly I think it's one of the main reasons why YouTubers even go there.

I should just call myself a self proclaimed "Anime Tourist" just for the fuck of it. lol

Even though I been consuming Japanese Anime longer than most Users on here have even been alive, I really hadn't been part of any social online Anime ecosystem until sometime after the pandemic. Where during the pandemic, I probably spent more time consuming Japanese Anime in my life than even all the combined years as a teenage brat back in the early 90s.

Where from an outside perspective, even though I have almost 4 decades under my belt dealing with this medium, I was practically an outsider until one day, completely out of the blue, I just decided to create a MAL account and become an active member instead of simply just using MAL just to look shit up from time to time completely anonymously.

So "tourists" became the new "elitist"?

Everything now is about the frightening tourist
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

There was already a thread on this topic, I'm going to paste my response with extra context:

I think a lot of the time people who call fans "tourists" for (rightfully, in a lot of cases) criticizing certain series or the actions of an individual/company/what-have-you are the real tourists. That, and people who will call others tourists for even suggesting a character might be gay/trans even though those themes have been in many popular anime for decades. Basically, if you are actively making the community an unsafe or toxic place, you are a tourist.

In addition, I think that if a new anime fan isn't outright spreading misinformation, hating on series they haven't watched, acting like an expert on something they don't know about, I don't think they deserve the tourist label. We all start somewhere, and we all learned the dynamic of the anime fandom over time.

Thankfully its not a problem in Japan. Any tourist voices will never be heard because the primary audience is Japanese and anime will always be (hopefully) be made for the Japanese. People who have complaints about anime should just not watch it and stick to their western slop.

@ma1kawa11 spot on with that
Anime is art, there is not such a thing as fake fan or tourist, if you claim that there is you just want to ignore criticism or to seem better than others...

Enjoy what you enjoy, handle criticism and understand that the kind of stuff you watch doesn't determine how smart you are

@Yuu_Kanzaki you said it in the other topic and I will again support you-if you see other people enjoying art in a different way to you as a big problem, you probably don't know what a problem is

@dreamingneon I think that's a good point, the anime community is booming more than ever, but like gatekeeping people for having bad takes is a bit too far. A lot of people can be excessive with bullying people online to the extent of literally killing people's careers over wrong takes.

Everyone has different tastes. I think people hated the video TheAnimeMen posted because they think they showed disrespect to the entire show when they only watched the first episode of the anime(which can highly differ from the entire show, obviously). Even Gintama fans fully admit that the first episode of Gintama isn't all that great. Not a lot of shows have a great start, with some can be weak or modest, people can get offended over others' takes.

@StarlaFox It seems like it is on YouTube and Twitter for some reason. It is somewhat funny that some voices of the anime community want to call TheAnimeMen poser when they're just ranking anime based on the first episode (NOT THE ENTIRE ANIME, in fact) and somehow it's a garbage take.

I DO NOT THINK that being an anime tourist is inherently bad. I think people hate on them because they have different tastes, where in the end, it's shunning people away from actually enjoying Japanese media. Fine, some people prefer Demon Slayer over other shows; it's literally what clicks with the audience. Just because Demon Slayer is somehow carried by the animation does not mean Demon Slayer is a 'bad show'. There's like a weird double standard some anime fans have when it comes to the term 'animation'.

Objectively speaking, The Seven Deadly Sins S3 animation is really bad. The reason why people hate on it because it's a very bad adaptation in terms of quality. But when Demon Slayer or JJK enters the picture, for some reason, animation is not important when it's literally what an anime ADAPTATION is supposed to do.

It is a personal issue to me, those who get into loli animes and then complain about them "sexualizing children"...they have no knowledge on what they are watching and end up embarrassing themselves 😥

I mean it's not even a real "problem", just a mild annoyance if anything. I tend to not judge which anime folks watch unless it's something really gross or morally bankrupt, but those kinds of anime are ones we don't talk about around here anyway.

@Early_Morning Like everyone arguing over this is like really funny. We have voices saying we need to defend the medium from other people while also forgetting there are animated atrocities that transcend beyond the anime audience, like Boku no Pico or School Days.

Bad takes are a part of enjoying media, not just anime. I actually don't know how some people can like, say this without looking in the mirror XD

Your ignorance,as the one who made the thread named The Anime Tourism Problem, even though we already had a thread with the same name and same attenton seeking nonsense topic, and virtue signaling about so-called "animated atrocities " is on another level, which shows you are no different than those unironically use the term anime tourist.

Hypocrisy is thy name.

And this whole shenanigan just proves how much dumber the whole anime community got compared to the early years of 2000 and before, and of course it reflects how much more dumber people got with each passing year.
