Do you ever judge people based on how they write online?

Will you think less of someone the worse they write online? Does it annoy you if someone types a whole paragraph with no uppercase letters or punctuation? Have you jumped on the bandwagon of hating emoticons? Or are there maybe other things that make you judge someone as you read their posts?

Look I know my grammar sucks and there's a reason for it.
I only judge a person if they use zoomer speak or ebonics.

@Cybercat2000 Somehow I've yet to see anyone write online in AAVE, I'm probably not on the right websites. I just hope this only apply to written text and not about real life too... (or also with fiction. Rush Hour would have been way more boring if Chris Tucker hadn't acted the way he did!)

Not really, unless they're one of those individuals that loves to do that whole text talk.

Example: "ic yeah I no 2!"

I am decent enough to look past some mispelling or grammar errors

but if it's someone typing paragraphs about some very unhinged stuff, then I may turn my head a bit

Yeah I do. Though honestly I judge myself the most.

I don't care if you write paragraphs with bad grammar, just make it readable.

Also people who use fancy words all the time. There’s a big difference between using the occasional big word to emphasize your point, versus stuffing every line with them just to look smart.

Example:
"The loquacious gentleman, in his tediously protracted discourse adorned with ostentatious verbiage, endeavors to propagate the misguided notion that the habitual employment of grandiloquent terminology constitutes genuine intelligence."

Did you read all that? Probably not.

Here's what it means:
"The man, in his long and boring speech, tries to spread the idea that using big words a lot means being smart"

Much easier right? That’s why I believe the real goal of language isn’t to show off but to communicate clearly. The clearest message is the one with the fewest words.

usually i don't give a shit. however, one thing that irks me like none other, is the reviews. the amount of cornballs who post reviews for anime/manga on here and talk as if they're some fucking nobel laureate is nothing short of nauseating.

It depends on the level. Look I am lazy, I get it. When I type, it's literally a stream of consciousness, and as a result, I will make mistakes. I think 50% of my time, dedicated to writing my university papers, was spent on editing. I need to edit a lot.

Regardless, you don't need perfect punctuation. You don't need to ensure the comma is always in the right place. If you are completely incoherent, and you write like a TikTok obsessed, illiterate, Gen Alpha kid, then yes I am going to judge you. It's not hard to avoid that though.

Of course - that phrasing made me slip into a daydream of a pile of raw, damp logs and a short chain stretching toward your wrists, fleur...

But honestly, I'm not judgmental. At least - as long as I don't see a space before a comma, or "it's" used as a possessive - we can be good friends.

Sure, but it's more important what they write, and less important how they write it.

All I really want is for posts to be readable. I will not mind spelling/grammatical mistakes here and there. I am also mindful some users won't speak English as a first language so I try and not pass judgement even if there are a lot of errors. Biggest issues I encounter is posters who excessively use text speak or write blocks of texts with no paragraphs. If I see instances of that I tend to skip over such posts and not read them. I wouldn't look down on the user though.

What really matters is what people say and how they say it. That's what I measure.

Nah. I know not everyone has the same background. Some folks had different focuses just so they could survive. I don't have time to worry too much about that type of thing.
I'll be real with you, I do raise a brow when I see excessive usage of emojis (not emoticons) in one post here on MyAnimeList. That's only because MAL doesn't have emojis, so they seem really out of place. For example "Omg this was so hooooot hnnnng ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜". I usually see it in BL series discussions here. On a forum like Gaia Online or something I won't bat an eye though. It's not anything I judge people by too much, it just makes me jump a little... maybe because it reminds me of when I was a kid into anime? Because that's how a lot of us typed.

The only time I will be a little bit is if I just can't understand it due to the abundance of new age slang! Like that one really young user that briefly appeared. Though to be fair, I was her age when I made an account here, so maybe I have no leg to stand on... lol

@Auron I think that was intentional rather than just how they are. Actual people their age can write or type perfectly normal in plain English as well.

I mean yeah, the people who are being needlessly verbose also do it intentionally, still makes communication harder!

I mean it's the internet so I don't really expect scientific paper-levels of order and clarity when it comes to writing, and i myself never learnt how to write properly either... I think I'm more critical about myself than anyone else. But I at least wish people wouldn't write solid walls of text or write in text-speak (I mean a lot, not just a sentence or 2).

Yes, the five types of people I hate is those who's grammar is bad, those who don't use autocorect, those who can't count, and those that don't realize their using "your" instead of "you're."

I do not judge people.

About posting in a language you are not fluent yeah sometimes it is kind of hard to understand but users try their best to post that incoherent stuff everyone finds funny. English is a child level language so no need for grammar police.

Fair enough! I'm also wordy, but I think it is mostly justified as my threads are often more on the serious side and need a neat setup.

@Auron The difference is that the one is a stylistic choice in which some are a bit too much into casual chat mode while the other is more of a possible inability to shorten things for which it can be legitimate as well if there is more of a need to elaborate to make things clearer, but it could be also a preference for wanting to include more things inside one's reply

How people talk indicates how fun they are to be around
The more words usually means they want to be taken seriously (exception for copypasta word salads and sharing stories) and think being misunderstood is life or death and will likely project that on you too.
Some people can say really dumb things but it's hilarious so it doesn't matter the content.

For most of the time I simply don't care, it doesn't reflect the main stuff I care about when it comes to judging someone.

Although when someone doesn't use commas, periods and uppercase letter at the beginning of sentence, it is so difficult to read that it's hella annoying.

Simply and easily big YES to that.
fleurbleue said:

Annoys me enough. Aside from the fact that I teach English. Even if I wasn’t, it will still bothers me. I would lose track of someone’s point. That if he has any point in his argument, that is. Yet, still those who write a whole wall of texts. Fully corrected grammatically. Capitalization and punctuation used correctly. I have limited patience to read someone’s essay of reply. It turns me off. Depends on my mood. Information thrown to you in one hell of a ginormous package to read over such issue we argued. I rather have this debate on audio or video chat rather than texting. My fingers hurt from long typing.

Confusing replies/responses. They happen sometimes if not often. I just block/ignore a user. No time to waste.
