It's kinda sad to hear about what impurities are capable of. They're capable of inflicting psychological damage beyond just their abilities. Felt like a buildup episode between Hikaru and Yoshiki. They obviously have to make a move forward from their investigation. And... |

Finally got my doomed yaoi back after a week away and holy fucking shit they came back with one of the craziest episodes. Ton of lore, world-building, homoeroticism and your usual LGBT analogies, but that ending is crazy. These last few episodes are going to be insane. Starting us off with Kurebayashi-San whose backstory we finally get to hear. So her husband came back as a spirit and lived in their house before accidentally hurting their son one day. It’s clear he didn’t intend to do that as we see a tear drip from his eye, it’s probably the same situation as when Hikaru accidentally hurt Yoshiki when he touched him, but because the husband was a lower impurity/spirit, he couldn’t communicate with Kurebayashi the same as Hikaru can explain to Yoshiki. Extremely unfortunate. Understandable that she’d warn Hikaru about getting too close and potentially hurting Yoshiki. “Did you like him” ahhh, what a question to spring on Yoshiki. The way you can see all the color drain from his face and his eyes go so wide because he never got to tell OG Hikaru how he felt ๐ข Yoshiki later tells Hikaru “I don’t even want you to be like a human” which in-universe is a multi faceted response, he doesn’t want Hikaru to try and be something he’s not because they’ve established a unique relationship, but he also doesn’t want Hikaru to start acting too human as it would remind him of OG Hikaru and make him sadder. This conversation and the subsequent one where the boys are going over a plan of action serve as a metaphor for homosexuality as well. Hikaru says “ if I go back to the mountain everything will go away” in the same sense that gay people often feel all the issues they’re facing would go away if they stay in the closet or try to be straight etc. Hikaru is torn between wanting to live his newfound life and not wanting to hurt anyone or make them uncomfortable, again something gay people often struggle with. Then we get more lore in the form of our meeting with Takeda. So the Indo family apparently asked entity for something and it backfired, but what? Why did it cause the famine?? HOLY SHIT TANAKA KNOWS! Cat’s out of the bag. Hikaru being a supernatural entity is now no longer a secret. Cutting off his head without even asking questions is crazy tho, I need that next episode BADLY. Another banger. |

What an episode holy. After a one week break, it just got really good all of a sudden. Just everything about this episode was really good but the part where Hikaru's head got decapitated was insane. The camera following the way his head rolled was insane. Next episode is going so good, I already know it. 5/5 |

It's the anime that works on both upfront level and metaphor level, you can watch this without analyzing and you can still have fun, or you can have fun deciphering this anime message (like a warning that if Hikaru keep involving with Yoshiki, Yoshiki might not be able to return to human world again, means that Yoshiki might not be able to return to heterosexual again, and finding a place that Hikaru can be himself means that finding a place that accept LGBT). |

Alright, we finally saw the detective’s actual manga debut, where he was literally aura farming, kicking the impurity aside as if she were nothing while simultaneously slicing off Hikaru’s head. The singing was just the icing on the cake. I wonder if they're gonna converse or fight after that, haha. |

Kuribayashi san has been a really good character. Her explanation was very easy to understand. Hope nothing happens to her cause in this type of story she's likely to die. Specially since she's a medium. A real one. What can they do? Why did Takeda want her help? Also what did the Indo family actually do in the past. There was more to the famine thing after all. That ending though, damn. |

Didn't expect that scene to come so soon. After a one week hiatus, we're back with a bang (slash). I want to see Tanaka performing Aitakatta at the karaoke. Fuckin' scene stealer. Hikaru's grave next to Crowly's ๐ฅฒ๐๐ซ |

I like that anime only flashback at the beginning of the episode. It shows what Yoshiki means when he says Hikaru was adult-like. Even when mourning his father Hikaru quickly turns the moment into a joke to move on from the tough stuff. Maybe I'm wrong but I think kids this young rarely deflect in such a way, and usually just let their feelings out (hence why "Hikaru" is often describes as being a bit like a child - he struggles to hide his emotions and they spill out involuntarily). Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Hikaru learned about the great responsibility of his family from a young age? Even when facing death, he wasn't thinking about how scary it is, he was thinking about the people he leaves behind and how to make sure they don't suffer grief over his death. We don't know much about OG Hikaru, but what we do know is actually really tragic, like damn this poor kid... |

I tought I was 1 week delayed with this anime, but apparentaly last week's episode didn't air? Well, good for me, because now I'm up to date with the most recent episode I guess xD Although I was excited to be able to watch 2 episodes... What an episode this one was though... That ending with Tanaka slicing Monster Hikaru's head... But before that, can we appreciate the lore dump we got this episode? We got explained what's happening in the village, why Monster Hikaru leaving the forest made all that happen, why the Indo family (Hikaru's family) had that ritual, that lead to both Hikaru and his father deaths, and what's really the vision Yoshiki has towards this Monster Hikaru. We are still not sure what Monster Hikaru is, but I'm sensing a sad backstory is, they teased that some episodes ago. It's giving me AoT vibes, if you know what I mean by that. Seeing Yoshiki mourn Hikaru's death is still sad, but it's also confirmed he has this affinity to Monster Hikaru, because it makes him always remember his Hikaru :( I hope he realises he doesn't need an entity like Nonuki to remind him of his best friend/first love. But I'm glad to see he knows they are different things, as he doesn't even see Monster Hikaru in a romantic nor sexual way anymore. I guess little by little, Yoshiki is being able to mourn his friend, and the truth is that this Monster Hikaru helped him in this path. Who knows what would have happened to Yoshiki if he didn't have this "friend". This whole scene was probably one of the best, especially when Monster Hikaru asks Yoshiki if he liked Hikaru, and when Yoshiki talks more about Hikaru, who we never got to know actually. Rie's backstory was tragic honestly, losing a child like that... That's why she was so keen on making Yoshiki leave Nonuki's side some episodes ago. But even to the impurity, you could see there was still a bit of the father left, since the impurity cried when Iori was killed. But Rie is actually going to help Yoshiki and Monster Hikaru finding a way to save the town (preferably without having to throw Monster Hikaru into the mountain again). Now, will Tanaka have the same approach? Seeing in how he just went and cut Hikaru's head off, it doesn't seem so. I doubt that was enough to kill Monster Hikaru, but it sure was a shock to Yoshiki, losing Hikaru for a 2nd time is not something he's capable of going through (at least for now, because we all know how this anime is called...). I wonder if the old man was possessed by the impurity due to the fact he made contact with Yoshiki and Monster Hikaru (that attract a lot of impurities) or if he was already possessed before. I always wondered what would happen to Monster Hikaru for it to have a scar on its neck in the ending, and now we know why, nice foreshadowing. Honestly, this episode is probably one of the best of the anime so far (episode 7 still is the best episode, but that one is hard to top), and it explained a lot of stuff, that honestly needed to be explained at this point for the plot to move foward. I now can't wait for next episode! I need it now! I was expecting to watch 2 episodes today, but I guess that isn't happening now. Edit: Quick reminder we only have 3 more weeks of The Summer Hikaru Died... :( I'm not ready to depart ways with this anime, now I'm the one in negation. Also, what did the Indo family do to cause all that suffering? Does it have anything to do with what Hikaru's father said to him some episodes ago. |

I'm also really curious to get to know the original Hikaru better, since it seems he carried a big burden, even if he never showed it to Yoshiki. Although the Nonuki Hikaru is portrayed to be "similar" to the original Hikaru, it seems that they did have their differences, and one of them was their maturity. Ahhh, this anime is really so good. I'm super glad the manga just started to be published this month in my country, which means I can soon start the manga! Rie seems to want to help them, but she noticed Hikaru’s essence. So intense for Tanaka to use that spirit. Discovering Hikaru’s nature is exciting, an entity outside the life and death. So, why was the old man the next to die, is there a list and order, what the Indo Family did, and finally, Tanaka confronting Hikaru. |

Yoshiki later tells Hikaru “I don’t even want you to be like a human” which in-universe is a multi faceted response, he doesn’t want Hikaru to try and be something he’s not because they’ve established a unique relationship, but he also doesn’t want Hikaru to start acting too human as it would remind him of OG Hikaru and make him sadder.

I would actually add that Yoshiki telling 'Hikaru' to not be human stems from the fact that he dislikes conformity !! Asking the monster to conform to being human is just as absurd as asking him to confirm to be heterosexual just like the rest of the village expects him to be. And so as the latter is a non-human entity, Yoshiki is able to just be himself in the face of 'Hikaru' who lacks human prejudice. |

Back to show why this show is one of the top five for the season. But I am seeing a trend in the last couple of years of shows jumping the gun and not taking the time for exposition and development Is it the budget, production or attention span? Not sure but wish they took their time to cook. |

Random question, does anyone else air drum the intro to the OP song? It’s pretty fun to do lol. I really felt this show’s absence last weekend, really glad to have it back. We learned a lot about what’s going on in the village in this one, and basically Hikaru isn’t necessarily the reason ghosts are showing up, but he is a beacon of sorts that attracts them, and of course we know Nonuki-sama being kept on the mountain made the ghosts stay away but sending Hikaru back up there is the last resort. It’s nice that alongside Kurebayashi, they’re going to figure out a way to stop the crazy shit from destroying the village while allowing Hikaru to remain there, but it’s certainly gonna be a tough job. I also really liked the bit between Hikaru and Yoshiki in the shed, I’m sure Yoshiki was hurting a lot there, and it really is sad he’s the only one to mourn the original Hikaru because no one else knows he’s dead, but the development between Yoshiki and the current Hikaru really showed here with Yoshiki’s words, even going as far as saying Hikaru doesn’t even need to be human, this lad and ghost god(?) duo sure have come a long way since the start of the show. But damn the last moments of this episode were wild, it was almost hard to take in that stuff on the Indo family because of what happened right after where the old man turned into a weird long haired corpse, but then Tanaka showed up and saved the day, right up until he sliced Hikaru’s head off lol, a shocking way to end the episode but I’m sure Hikaru isn’t dead for a second time, Tanaka even said he was “making sure” so perhaps he was trying to find out if Hikaru was the real deal or not, and I’m hoping that sword only works on ghosts or something because it would’ve been bad if Hikaru was a true human lol. RIP that old fella tho, no idea what happened to him but that looked like a truly awful way to go. |

Another peak episode... I feel like little by little we see Yoshiki coming on terms with the fact that "Hikaru" will never be a human or replace the original in the slightly. It's clear that Yoshiki sees himself in "Hikaru", someone who doesn't fit the norms of society and it's forced to act normal, to act "human". That's why him not wanting "Hikaru" to change himself is SUCH a character development for Yoshiki. I'm so happy he's able to understand that being different it's okay, I just hope he accepts that on himself to later on. These two have clearly formed a strong connection of something that I wouldn't call neither romantic or friendship, maybe closer to a soulmate. Also it's so sad to think that no one but Yoshiki is there to mourn the original Hikaru. Losing someone important is painful but being the only one going through that pain must be a terrible weight he has to carry with. |

Either from the famine times or seeing him going to the mountain in the first place. |

So it was all the Indou's fault!? Whatever their ancestors asked the god in the mountains (Nonuki-sama) caused the famine that then turned that god into a cursed god(?). And now their family offers a ritual to probably calm the kami/pay for their sins, or something. Their name means something associated with Death, are they some sort of executioners or a family of bloody murderers? I gotta respect Tanaka, he's really good at his job. Didn't he say that Katana can only cut those that aren't human(?), works well with Hikaru, I know he can probably reattach that head but damn. Another layer to Yoshiki's trauma. |

I feel so bad for Yoshiki and all the trauma that his endured being friends with Hikaru and Hikaru the second. It always seems like there’s trouble waiting around the corner and it’s going to scare the crap out of it every second. |

The flashback at the start was cute, and also showed Hikaru's secretive side. Though, I don't know why it was actually there, since it serves the exact same purpose as the flashback from ep 1 when Hikaru had said he'd be going to the mountain, but when asked to elaborate, he couldn't be honest and instead decides to crack jokes. Kurebayashi's flashback surprised me, since the Impurity cried like he was sad about being unable to connect with his family. I can't remember him crying in the manga. I'll have to check later. Kurebayashi meeting with "Hikaru" didn't feel the same as it did in the manga. The actions and dialogues were the same, but the meaning didn't hit. Is it just me? In the manga, it felt like Kurebayashi realised a gay kid was not what she thought he'd be, but she still decides he's a bad influence for the kid she knows, which gets her to ask the gay kid to stay away from the other kid or else that kid won't ever be able to return to society. "Hikaru" tried to correct the Yamahisa store's Kisokiso ice cream/Ice creem sign! lol That was so adorable! (What does Kisikiso even mean, though? Like what is it a misspelling of?) Yoshiki told "Hikaru" he doesn't need to be like humans, and then he asks him not to be like humans. The first part is like "I accept you as you are" while the second is like "I don't want to be rejected by you" since humans are homophobic. Just look at one of the "Not Recommended" reviews this anime got! I am surprised they actually gave "Hikaru" the tie-dye shirt that he wears in the manga in his decapitation scene. 2d animating something like that must be a nightmare! I know they just use masks when making patterned clothes, but you need to warp them with every movement, which can be annoying to do. We saw Tanaka's world through his sunglasses. Interesting... Tanaka was singing Aitakatta after he decapitated a kid! WTF! lol Anyway, fan theory time: I think Tanaka is Kurebayashi's son. It's not been confirmed, but doesn't it feel like he is? the manga makes me wonder if he is, but the anime makes me believe he is. lol |

I keep expecting Hikaru to eventually snap and go on a killing spree but I guess that isn't going to happen. To much time spent on the weird relationship between Hikaru and Yoshiki and not enough horror. |

@mariox7777 It's just not that type of story. There is some amount of gore, but "Hikaru" isn't a type of character to just go on a killing spree around the village for no reason First of all - Since the beginning he's been trying to keep his true identity hidden so he can remain in the village living like a human. The times he does attack someone are when he feels threatened, a bit like a cornered animal (when Matsuura recognizes him as "Nounuki-sama", when Yoshiki rejects him continuing living as a substitute for Hikaru and when Asako confronts him; even back in EP1 he says to Yoshiki "I don't want to have to kill you" suggesting that that's usually his first instinct, and in EP7 monologue at the end he confirms that initially he though that if Yoshiki ever found out he would kill him) There's no point in him going on a killing spree in a town that is mostly completely unaware of his true identity Second of all - He's fundamentally not human, but he's trying to change and to understand humanity so he can remain in the human world. He even mutilated himself to be less of a threat to human life. And he is visibly weakened as a result. Again, not really a set up for a spontaneous killing spree xD Lastly - As mentioned in this episode the biggest threat in the village are currently impurities that are becoming more aggressive after "Nounuki-sama" came down from the mountain AND became weaker. The past presence on the mountain, that is now "Hikaru", used to be like a lightning rod for impurities. I feel like you're ignoring the horror that's present and looking for something that has no basis in the story |

What an eventful episode! Kurebayashi's backstory is so sad. Watching what happened to her son and husband really affected me. That one tear he shed… The new lore on Hikaru's family is very intriguing! I can't wait to find out more. What Tanaka did at the end was crazy. |

Ain't no way they ended the episode on THAT. Just when stuff was getting down to business. Next week needs to come quick. |

In this episode boys learn more about paranormal from medium widow. She confirms Hikaru being sort of lightning rod that attracts spirits. After the famile people started to believe Godlike entity striking them with the curse. It used to dwell on a mountain, and villagers believed all bad vibes to go there. Now with Hikaru's doppelgänger running around the village, this is no longer the case. Later both kids visit one old man who might know more. After revealing involvement of Indou family(Hikaru's family name) in dark sacrifice business, the old guy gets possessed by hairy samurai ghost. Fortunately, plot remembers the blonde exorcist is a part of the show and brings him to rescue boys. Then dude confirms his suspicions with precise cut of Hikaru's head. Pretty crazy cliffhanger for a slowburning show. Good paranormal stuff was saved for last few episodes, so we'll see soon if story gets more wild. |

The way you can see all the color drain from his face and his eyes go so wide because he never got to tell OG Hikaru how he felt ๐ข

This episode reminded me why the adaptation’s been so good. The pacing may be slow but it works, because when something crazy like Hikaru’s head getting cut off happens it lands way harder. The sound design and those quiet pauses make the tension unreal, and the art keeps that eerie beauty from the manga intact. I really like how the anime leans into the relationship too — Yoshiki’s breakdown wasn’t just horror, it was heartbreak. The whole vibe is equal parts sweet and terrifying, and episode 9 nailed that balance. |
