If the OP is reading this explanation, they should reread the chapter because everything I'm saying is specific.

The two bullets, both numbered 17, represent his twin 17th year old sons (and the man is the "one that made them" and "he didn't have many"; these direct quotes from God apply to the bullets/sons). His death, only two years after his wife's death, has left his young sons orphaned. Now there are two other important things to note:

The man breathed a sigh of relief when he arrived, something that God instantly noticed. That was also what angered God because it shows that the man is glad to be freed of the burden of his life and isn't worried about his sons.

The wife, however, had been extremely worried when she had died two years earlier.

My guess is that the man died from some illness since in his flashback his coworker mentioned how he had just gotten out of the hospital.

I'm not entirely sure why he was punished. For overworking and not taking care of himself? For not being more attentive to his sons? Most likely. I hope this helps.

@Souphead thank you!! i didnt really understand this story very much until reading what you wrote. yeah i think god punished the man because he seemed like he didnt really care for how his sons felt about his death (were assuming that since the boys are still minors, that they still depend on their dad for financial and emotional support now that their mother is gone)
