Please don't misunderstand the thread title, I am not questioning the excessive horniness of otaku or how much sex otaku actually have (not much I guess). The question is about how many women are really into anime and manga? Within Japan the sex ratio doesn't look that bad (actual SEX ratio does look bad with declining birthrates but I digress). According to Shueisha's statistics 30-40% of Jump readers are female. Even for a magazine specifically advertised for boys it actually has a diverse readership. But I don't think things are the same outside of Japan. Ofcourse you see a lot of women at conventions and such, but that's a specific event for fans. I don't think there are as many casual female fans compared to men. Of all the female friends I had no one was really into anime, and their understanding of anime didn't go any further than "pikachu is so cute" (I'm not making that up that's what girls told me). My own guess is that overall sex ratio of anime fans is tipped towards sausages.

Probably about 50-50 with the female audience being less active as a community.

Most devout anime fans I've met here in Poland were women.

Maybe you should have titled it Gender Ratio and I think it's probably close to 90-10 male to female for lifetime fans. It might be 50/50 among zoomers but most of them will drop it in just a few years once they aren't teenagers anymore.

You forgot neutral, androgyn, two spirits, Sylfeon-s, sheep, chairs and electric guitar genres. But I'll assume it's biological. (jokes)

More seriously, in conventions can have very family friendly stalls, with parents and children too, that are meant for casuals. I think there are parts of the medium that can appeal to all, without having to rely on excessive romance, boy's love or other shoujo/josei tropes, though having a female-oriented sector is healthy too.

Of course, casual female fans will find more appeal in cute Pokemon plushies (don't read it as a stereotype, more like a statistical tendency). It is a nice introduction to anime.

That being said, how many women are really into anime and manga? Never enough to me (lol). It's true there are less women, especially online. (There are no girls on the Internet) but it's hard to make a broad stat apart studies such as self-declaration on MAL accounts or sales in specific genres (e.g. shoujo manga).

The question you're asking is even harder because of that: what objectively defines a casual fan? That is completely different from genre demographics and studying the subset population of casual fans isn't something I've ever heard being done before.

I tend to think there are more girls into cosplay than men though, but maybe it's only a feeling. At least, cosplay is precise enough of a niche that could have some stats into it.

I saw an article years ago that the ratio is around 60-40 in Japan.
Gender ratio is very different in every anime. Apothecary Diaries and Bookworm tend to have more female audience while Mushoku Tense and Roshidere have more male audience.

I don't know about overseas fans. My estimation for overseas anime fans is around 75-25.

Among hardcore fans avast majority is male probably 95/5. Among more casual watchers 75/25 is my guess. I think men are more likely to pirate while women play it safer.
