Haruhi Suzumiya will be a 35yo milf next year.

It’s definitely edging into retro territory. It aired over 16 years ago, which in anime years is vintage.
But i’ve been watching anime since the ‘90s, so Toradora probably sits in the middle, not quite retro, not quite contemporary

It was one of those series that were hot topic and highly recommended around the time when I started regularly watching anime. Now you say those series reached the retro status...

I haven't seen all of the episodes. Maybe I should watch it later?? If something was made over 15 years ago, then it could be considered retro by now.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Huh.... this is one of those piece of information I had no idea what to do with... until I started to think what would happen if Haruhi had an adult cast... and I think it would quickly become something Satoshi Kon would have written... Yep... not sure what to do with that either.

@rbp_pbr2 Well Haruhi Suzumiya by Satoshi Kon is definitely not something I'd have ever thought about or realized I wanted until now.

I'm afraid so. As a 2020s anime fan, 2008 is positively ancient and a very different time from 2025.

I tried watching Toradora a few years ago, but it was much too strange and annoying to me, I wasn't having much fun at all. The same with Haruhi, but at least that had a cool concept, so I managed to finish it.

I remember back then, I found the pink-haired girl from Toradora really annoying. If I watched this show again today, I'd probably skip through all her scenes, as my tolerance for annoying girls has only gotten lower.

Yeah pretty much. I have interacted with anime fans that thought FMAB, is ugly looking by today's standards, and too old to be watchable. FMAB came out after Toradora, so we are at that point. People born in 2010, are 15 right now, and when I was 15 you better believe I thought shows like EVA were old. Granted, there is less difference between modern anime, and shows that came out in the late 2000s, compared to early 2010s shows and mid 90s anime.

I think it could be considered retro at this point. That type of tsundere barely even exists anymore, when it was once the most popular character archetype. Animation style has changed quite a bit from then too; I would put anime from that time period right between the 90s aesthetic and the current one.

If an anime ended before 2000 = its considered retro once its 10 years since it ended

If an anime ended from 2000-to-2009 = its considered retro 15 years since it ended

if an anime ended from 2010-to-2019 = its considered retro 20 years since it ended

Toradora ended in 2009, so yes, its considered retro

I would say yes as it is 17 years old already. Video games are generally considered retro after about 15 years and Toradora has already passed that threshold.

All pre-2015 Anime are already old. Akame ga Kill! and NGNL are already old by 2025.

The question isn't if Toradora is retro (it obviously is) but when it became retro. The lack of clear, large changes in 2D culture since 2008 make it harder to pinpoint than it was to make a similar judgment back then

I guess from its literal definition and usage, you probably can. Still, I don't know if you can use "retro" completely universally and objectively. I mean, if you were alive in the 70's, 80's or 90's, it would be weird to hear you refer to something from the 2000's as being retro. Surely your retro would be different to that of somebody much younger?

Yes, I'd say so. Late 2008 was ages ago. I was only five years old, I barely remember anything from that time. It's probably older than some of the forum users here. It definitely looks retro by today's standards of digital animation.

"Is Toradora a retro anime at this point?"

Good romantic comedy? Yeah, sounds like a thing from the past...

One can argue that Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai is a good show which is relatively new, but this only proves romcoms being a dying art...not the mention the author of Kaguya-sama got really bored making it and went to create the trash which is Oshi No Ko.

What is in retrospection when there's hardly anything to remember? And it's ironic that you didn't ask this type of question in the forum dedicated to the series. Pretty sure you would gather more attention there with 2.3M members, thus better variety in response.

"Toradora!" is definitely old, having aired in 2008, but it's not really 'retro'. It's more like early modern digital anime. It was likely produced natively in 720p and widely distributed on Blu-ray for 1080p, which was common for that era, and it used digital production techniques that still form the foundation of how anime is made today. While the tools and polish have improved since then, the core workflow remains largely the same, even in anime from the late 2010s and 2020s.

The thing is that its really difficult to consider a popular anime to be "retro" when many people outside of Japan were watching new episodes air weekly of that popular anime, as those new episodes were also being released in Japan weekly.

This all started back in 2006, when people now had access to new episodes of an anime airing weekly, and didnt have to wait for a foreign company to release that anime in your country on TV like a year later after it ended in Japan.

This is why popular well-known animes that had episodes released in 2006-and-later dont feel like retro animes.

The only animes that "feel" retro are:

- Animes that ended in 2005-and-before

- Animes that ended from 2006-to-later BUT those animes were not popular / well-known

This is why Haruhi, Toradora, Death Note, Fate Zero, FMAB, dont feel retro. And ironically, this is why FMA 2003 does feel retro

So is Toradora retro? Yes

But does Toradora feel retro? No

I don't think time is enough to make something retro. First, it has to go out of style. If it doesn't go out of style despite style changes it is timeless, otherwise it eventually becomes retro.

But as far as anime goes, it's been a very long time since we've experienced style changes:

If the style doesn't change it won't go out of style and thus it can't become retro.

@oooo3333 The turning point around this time (2006/2007) was that anime series started to get HD releases too and not just came out in the old 480p format. It could be said that the old 480p series feel retro to the younger generation, while a lot of those you have mentioned were already released after HD became a thing (if I remember correctly). That is why I think Toradora is a good example to contemplate about whether it is retro or not, because that too was released around/after that technological change/boundary.
