Well, there was nothing which I rated above a 7/10, but on the other hand, I don't think that I had anything which I rated below a 5/10 either. To me it was not an exceptional year but a largely solid enough one which contributed some very unique and creative, as well as memorable series which I'm glad to have found and known. I'm glad to have found even the ones I would consider my least favorite and rated the lowest, as if I disliked them that much, then I would have just dropped them altogether, after all.
I have to say though that I think as a whole it was a better year than 2022, but I considered 2022 the worst year for anime in probably several decades. This year, 2024, unfortunately I think was not as good as 2023, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, etc. So it's like the second worst year from recent times. But years like 2020, 2021, and last year 2023, had some of my top favorite series of the decade thus far (series like Tengoku Daimakyou, Sonny Boy, and Dorohedoro, among some others) whereas I can't really say that about this year.
I think that this should go without saying, but I'll just point out the obvious to clarify and try to leave no room for confusion: The series which I consider to most closely fit the "pleasant surprises" description aren't necessarily the series I liked best. The series which I consider to most accurately be called "disappointing" aren't necessarily the worst ones or ones I liked least. Again, should be obvious, but just saying.
Most pleasant surprises:
- Girls Band Cry
- Raise wa Tanin ga Ii
- Sasaki to Pii-chan
- The Fable
- Astro Note
Greatest disappointments:
- Metallic Rouge
- Meiji Gekken: 1874
- Blue Archive the Animation
- Uzumaki
I'll add another category, which is greatest cases of squandered potential. Not exactly the same as "disappointments" as a "disappointment" implies a lofty expectation in advance going into it which is not met. In these cases, I had no higher expectations of the series as I barely knew of them and therefore gave them little to no thought beforehand, but upon actually starting them, saw signs of some greatness, or at least, interesting sparks within which ultimately wasn't properly capitalized on or explored and the series just kind of wasted what made them good in the first place (I suppose that a disappointment could also set in from an expectation you only develop after starting the series, but I'll separate this category into its own thing on the basis I gave).
Squandered potential:
- The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
- Tonari no Youkai-san
- Sentai Daishikkaku
- Isekai Suicide Squad
- Kono Sekai wa Fukanzen Sugiru
- Na Nare Hana Nare
- Tensui no Sakuna-hime
Dropped from the current (autumn) season:
- Dandadan
- Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai
- Trillion Game
- Haigakura
