I don't know if MAL does any New Year polls or discussions on this, so I'll just create a regular thread. So, what would you sum up this year in anime for you personally? Which anime pleasantly surprised you and fell into your heart, or, on the contrary, greatly disappointed you for one reason or another? Have you found any new favorite or intriguing shows for you, or, on the contrary, have you criticized or even dropped some? What are your general thoughts on the this year in animanga as whole?

Pleasant surprises:

- Mayonaka Punch
- Na Nare Hana Nare
- VTuber Nandaga Haishin Kiri Wasuretara Densetsu ni Natteta

Biggest disappointments:

- Acro Trip
- Girls Band Cry
- Mahoutsukai ni Narenakatta Onnanoko no Hanashi
- NegaPosi Angler
- Oomuro-ke: Dear Sisters
- Ooi! Tonbo
- Seiyuu Radio no Uraomote
- Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?
- Tonari no Youkai-san (This was THE biggest disappointment. I thought this would have been as good as Natsume Yuujinchou, but that was definitely not the case.)

Overall, the weakest year since 2007, so not really a great one.

2016 will be always the peak.

Well, there was nothing which I rated above a 7/10, but on the other hand, I don't think that I had anything which I rated below a 5/10 either. To me it was not an exceptional year but a largely solid enough one which contributed some very unique and creative, as well as memorable series which I'm glad to have found and known. I'm glad to have found even the ones I would consider my least favorite and rated the lowest, as if I disliked them that much, then I would have just dropped them altogether, after all.

I have to say though that I think as a whole it was a better year than 2022, but I considered 2022 the worst year for anime in probably several decades. This year, 2024, unfortunately I think was not as good as 2023, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, etc. So it's like the second worst year from recent times. But years like 2020, 2021, and last year 2023, had some of my top favorite series of the decade thus far (series like Tengoku Daimakyou, Sonny Boy, and Dorohedoro, among some others) whereas I can't really say that about this year.

I think that this should go without saying, but I'll just point out the obvious to clarify and try to leave no room for confusion: The series which I consider to most closely fit the "pleasant surprises" description aren't necessarily the series I liked best. The series which I consider to most accurately be called "disappointing" aren't necessarily the worst ones or ones I liked least. Again, should be obvious, but just saying.

Most pleasant surprises:

- Girls Band Cry
- Raise wa Tanin ga Ii
- Sasaki to Pii-chan
- The Fable
- Astro Note

Greatest disappointments:

- Metallic Rouge
- Meiji Gekken: 1874
- Blue Archive the Animation
- Uzumaki

I'll add another category, which is greatest cases of squandered potential. Not exactly the same as "disappointments" as a "disappointment" implies a lofty expectation in advance going into it which is not met. In these cases, I had no higher expectations of the series as I barely knew of them and therefore gave them little to no thought beforehand, but upon actually starting them, saw signs of some greatness, or at least, interesting sparks within which ultimately wasn't properly capitalized on or explored and the series just kind of wasted what made them good in the first place (I suppose that a disappointment could also set in from an expectation you only develop after starting the series, but I'll separate this category into its own thing on the basis I gave).

Squandered potential:

- The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
- Tonari no Youkai-san
- Sentai Daishikkaku
- Isekai Suicide Squad
- Kono Sekai wa Fukanzen Sugiru
- Na Nare Hana Nare
- Tensui no Sakuna-hime

Dropped from the current (autumn) season:

- Dandadan
- Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai
- Trillion Game
- Haigakura

Frieren and Kimi ni Todoke as best of year.

Apothecary Diaries and Dandadan coming close second.

Dungeon Meshi was a pleasant surprise. Danmachi S5 very good, keeps getting better with each passing season. Astro Note and Metallic Rouge were unexpected hits for me.

Date A live S5 was a bit of a flop, Solo Levelling and Tower of God S2 plain disappointing.

Best of the year: tie between Sousou no Frieren and Kusuriya no Hitorigoto. While both technically did start in 2023, there just weren't any anime airing this year that started this year that even come close.

Most pleasant surprise of the year: Madougushi Dahliya wa Utsumukanai. I went into this expecting another kind of lame hetero isekai carried by the premise and I was glad to be completely wrong. Genuinely just a very enjoyable show.

Biggest disappointment of the year: The New Gate. I went into this with some higher-than-usual expectations for the video game isekai genre because I had heard some good things about the manga, but holy shit did it let me down. I know I have it rated a 7, but the underlying premise is enough to carry it. My biggest problem was it felt like half an anime - and not just because of the 12 episode length, but also because it seemed to be missing something. And when I read the manga, I found out I was absolutely correct.

Bonus best manga of the year: Suterare Elf-san wa Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyokute Kawaii! is my top pick, if we set aside The New Gate for not starting this year. I like cute girls, and I like cute girls that like cute girls. I also do happen to be an enjoyer of video game isekai. This just tickles my lesbian trash taste fancy. Looking forward to more of it.

"So, what would you sum up this year in anime for you personally?"

I had fun with some of the released anime, that's the most important part.

"Which anime pleasantly surprised you"

Dungeons Meshi and DanDaDan were hyped to the heavens and that's usually a bad sign, but this time around the hype was real.

"disappointed"

Yuuki Bakuhatsu Bang Bravern, Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction, Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 3, Shoushimin Series, Terminator 0 and Chi. Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite.

Here what I liked:

2024 - Dungeon Meshi, Hikari no Ou 2nd Season, Metallic Rouge, Majo to Yajuu, Meiji Gekken: 1874, Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu 2nd Season, Urusei Yatsura (2024), Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai, Sentai Daishikkaku, Kuramerukagari, Kurayukaba, Dungeon no Naka no Hito, Isekai Shikkaku, NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Part 2, Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi, Dandadan, Kamierabi 2nd Season, Mecha-ude (TV), Natsume Yuujinchou Shichi, Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri 2nd Season and Yamato yo, Towa ni: Rebel 3199.

@Nirinbo What intrigues me is how Dandadan both greatly disappoints and greatly pleasantly surprises people. Is this a result of it being a really big hype show? But if we talk about something less loud, then as I see it, Renren and Jellyfish disappointed you. They weren't the best shows, but in my opinion both anime were pretty solid.

@RobertBobert 60.6% of recommended reviews is extremely low for such a highly rated anime, even lower than the infamous Chainsaw Man anime adaptation (64.4%) that "should have looked like Science Saru did Dandadan".

@Nirinbo Do you think both shows are too controversial, but also that Dandadan's attitude would clearly suit CM more than Mappa's direction?

Pleasent surprise :
Days with my stepsister
Mission Yozakura Family
2.5D Ririsa
Weakest tamer..
Ranma 1/2
Gushing over magical girls

Not greatly disappointed but underwhelming :
Roshindere (Yuki carries)
Unnamed Memory (higher expectations after the start)
Banished from heroes party....(Huge fall off from S1)

Favorites :
Mushoku Tensie absolutely peaked best season by far.
Oshi No Ko S2 is as good if not better than S1
Makeine was an absolute blast one of most enjoyable animes
Frieren well she fully deserves her crown as #1 in MAL

And..Apothecary Dairies, Dandadan, Konosuba S3, Dungeon Meshi, Pseudo Harem were 10/10 too

Contrary..
Tensura S3 although gets overhated but it's yes not as great as previous seasons.
Spirit Chronicles S2, Wind Breaker was just bad. Dropped few trash and Shousmin which didn't intrested me.

@RobertBobert that's a common opinion among those who didn't like what Mappa did with CSM. I can agree that Science Saru might have been able to make "a hypothetical CSM adaptation that does the same things as the manga but better", but I see the different approach Mappa took as a sidegrade and not as a downgrade.

Most pleasant surprises:

- Girls Band Cry
- Raise wa Tanin ga Ii
- Oblivion Battery
- dungeon meshi
- Dainanaoji, I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince, so I Will Perfect My Magic as I Please ( I swear it's like the staff got better and better every epsiode using unreal Engine 5, and the story was fun)

- Days with my Stepsister
- Senpai is an Otokonoko
- About the Movement of the Earth
- Maou 999
- If My Wife Becomes an Elementary School Student.
- Train to the End of the World
- Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master

Greatly disappointing:

- Bye Bye Earth ( The pacing just ruined it)
- Suicide Squad
- My Deer Friend Nokotan
- Mettalic Rogue
- Uzumaki
- Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night ( the last few episodes oof)
- Shoshimin ( it was very eh, storyboarding and directing was good though)

My Favorites This year:

- Oblivion Battery
- Oshi no ko season 2
- Makiene
- Dangers in my heart Season 2
- Maou 999
- About the Movement of the Earth

This year for anime was pretty good overall. There were some shows that blew me away with not only story but directing, speaking of which, there were some shows that were very well directed, its probably me, but I swear the amount of shows with that quality of directing was more this year than last ( might be just recency bias).

I still have some anime to watch that aired this year.
Giji Harem and Atri: My Dear Moments have definitely been the most pleasant surprises so far, I didn't expect to like them this much.
On the other hand, the biggest disappointment was Girls Band Cry. I watched it because a lot of people were praising it and the avarage score was also high, but it turned out to be quite boring and there wasn't a single interesting character, atleast in my opinion.

My personal favorites of 2024:
1. Mononoke Movie: Karakasa
(=) Gimai Seikatsu
3. Kimi ni Todoke 3rd Season
4. Shoushimin Series
5. Ookami to Koushinryou: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf
6. Chi. Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite (I still need to watch the rest of the series for a full assessment)

It's a pretty good year overall, in my opinion. Compared to the last year, there's nothing conspicuous, but I think it's more on the steadier side.

@Nirinbo Is the original manga really that much more similar to the Dandadan anime than Mappa’s “urban JJK for zoomers”?

@Jellybeanx The mention of Nier's second season along with Oshi no Ko does bring up some interesting thoughts.

If Words of The Year is 'Polarisation', then the word for the year's anime is 'mediocre', bu the worse kind of mediocrity. No polarisation here.
Help! I need somebody. Help! Not just anybody. Help! You know I need someone. Helpppppp!
