This approach of creating a “mystery” and having the MC smart ass his way through solving it is boring to me.

However funny the conclusion Osanai catching a stray might be, a WHOLE episode about a chilly pastry is ridiculous, its really pushing the sudo
Hyouka narrative.

What I find surprising is that Kobato didn't suspect Osanai until he saw the survey papers. I suppose the series had to nerf him for this episode.

So, who in the newspaper club ended up writing the article about pastries?

Seba-kun seems like a nice guy, and he doesn't even have a single dialogue.
@phantomfandom Yeah. I know some might complain that the side characters aren't as interesting as Hyouka, but in the end it's just their personal judgement. You can find boring characters in Hyouka too.

Happy to say I had this episode’s mystery nearly entirely figured out merely minutes after the start of the episode

Please my heart can't take Osanai catching Ls for much longer. She's way too cute for this
Man, I keep getting impressed with this anime's ability to make 20 minutes of conversations fly while keeping me glued to the screen. Phenomenal stuff

I freaking love mystery anime, especially when they are unique like this one, which isn't mostly about someone dying and looking for culprit.

Osanai is so cute, but also has so ominous eyes

I can't believe their "not being ordinary" is shown in the opening all along, although I did notice Osanai looking always ominous, I just didn't know the other animal was a fox, I thought it was both wolf LOL.

@Alpha-Nine a smart person will suspect anything given ambiguous circumstances and will avoid jumping to conclusions to avoid clouding their judgment

I appreciate it's trying something different, and I normally love this kind of weird, soft, atmospheric show, but this is doing nothing for me. Some of it is the simplicity and pointlessness of the mysteries, but I think it's just as much how weirdly... angry all the characters seem. They're all so unpleasant to be around with flat affects only interrupted by senseless rudeness. Dunno. Wanted to like it but I can't.

I think this episode was the best so far - a short mystery solved within an episode and the pleasantly surprising connection between Osanai and the Berliners.

Have dropped more anime this season (which is terrible) than any season in the last 10 years.

Dropped this. Dull, uninteresting characters, and a stupid plot. A pity as the art style is nice, but it's mind-numbing. One of worst of the season.

Dumbest shit ever. What's with the pre-schooler level mysteries ? Boring as hell. Dropped 3/10

Shame about the visuals, just like Wistoria. Loads of awesome anime get ruined with shitty visuals, CGI, etc. Just for garbage like this to get top notch production values. SMH

InB4 : Play COD. Bro, i watched plenty of brainy anime. This is just bad, period.

that build up for it to be revealed to be Osanai was pretty hilarious in my opinion, I can see why some people are not liking this slow pacing but honestly I love it as opposed to some shows speeding through the plot; which doesn’t give me time to digest it sometimes

@snowykevin Imo, it's not the slowness is the issue, it's the lack of direction of it all. Hyouka was also very slow, but its mysteries were never pointless or reached an inconsequential solution, they always have some effect on the main characters.

The mystery in this ep is by all purposes pointless, it doesn't serve any narrative, expand the cast or flesh out/develop any character.

It also doesn't help that the chemistry between Kengo and Kobato is practically non-existent, it's not even fun watching them interact.

This episode's mystery admittedly was far too obvious after the first couple minutes to be honest, plus Osanai being separated from the actual mystery discussions and evaluation and having it be Kengo/Jogoro (and others like in this episode) is far less interesting of a dynamic to watch. I didn't mind the cocoa episode but this one did bore me admittedly since the setup was obvious, delivery was a bit dry too the whole time. Only thing else to say is Osanai just can't catch a break with how unlucky she is, even if this was more of her own doing this time around by sneakily trying to eat one of those pastries there.
@animejas I agree the mystery was just too weak this time. I had an idea what happened from the first few minutes into the episode and the moment they mentioned the person that wasn't part of it, it was very clear what happened (and to whom), and the episode took way too long to get to the conclusion of something so obvious.

I forgot about the intro - I think that was the point of the immediate info overload with the mystery too - so the reveal at the end made me also laugh (sorry, Osanai).

This exchange of the club members "let's stop this, it's just an article" "If we stop now we would look like idiots" - a kind of lampshade that it is a mundane topic. Thinking about this and Hyouka, what "mysteries" is it I see in my everyday that I do not mind to think about, but the people in these 2 series discuss it so thoroughly.

Kobato proceeding with his train of thought while the club members suffer behind him from spicy sauce was a funny bit.

Lol, classic Osanai the devourer behavior.

Wonder how this will effect her quest to track down her current “victims”.

I thought this anime lacked sharpness in character development in the first 4 episodes, but this episode had almost no character development at all (maybe not even many connections to the plot, I wouldn't know).
But looking at other people's comments here, it seems like more people are enjoying the mystery.

I liked how the mystery was very contained (the kitchen and the club room) and how information was revealed bit by bit. Also, the conclusion was more amusing than usual.

But again, there are things that don't really make sense. If they asked the guy who baked those pastries how many he had made, this would've resolved much more quickly... Kobato visited him multiple times throughout his investigation and never thought to ask him that? He was careful enough to consider the arrangement of the pastries on the plate, so he would've asked the baker how he arranged them and would've learned that there were in fact 5.

The taste test didn't really make sense either; if the culprit was indeed someone with a taste disorder, they could have still faked their reaction, because they knew that they were eating something spicy. I expected Kobato to fetch some red sauce that was not spicy and make everyone do a blind test; this way the culprit would not have known how they should be reacting, making it impossible to fake.

Actually, is there even a form of taste disorder that disables spiciness specifically? I thought spiciness was not really a flavor, but more a chemical reaction, something similar to pain.

Also, it's a big leap to go from the survey form, presumably from Osanai's class (I don't think they ever explicitly showed this), to Osanai crying earlier. It's a possibility, but Kobato has no reason to believe that these two pieces of information are indeed connected. Sure, he could've easily called her up and confirm his theory, but the show didn't think to show us that, and we're just told to accept that Kobato was right yet again.

Painful episode to watch. Give me back my 20 min xD

It starts with Osanai kinda crying due to unknown reason then "meet me later" to never be seen again in this episode, and then 20 min trying to find out who ate the damn spicy pastry and obviously was Osanai from the start.

Alright, after watching 5 episodes and just truly enjoying 1 episode (which was ep 4)... I am done with this anime xD Dropped.
It might get better second half, who knows, but from what I have seen this has been one of the weakest/uninteresting anime of this sort that I have ever watched.

glad they named them Berliner like every (sane) German does.
regionally they are called different in Germany, which can lead to heated discussions.
fun fact: in Berlin itself they are simply called Pfannkuchen (engl.: Pancakes). confusing, right?
here's a map for anyone interested:

They could've asked the guy from home ec how many pastries were there in the first place. lol
this episode would be 10 minutes long if they knew that there were 5 pastries.
