How was the Shonen scene in that time frame between the end of DBZ but before the start of one piece.
What i'm asking is what were the popular or significant shonen anime between early1996 until late1999.

Rurouni Kenshin and Detective Conan started airing around the time DBZ ended. Not that many other shonen on the same level of popularity aired tho afaik, although I might be forgetting one or two big ones.

We got some great shounen like Kindaichi the ultimate diciple. I would argue 1997-1999 had tons of series that step on dbz and one piece. Digimon adventure and yugioh too.

@Zarutaku Why do you think this era didn't have a huge shonen that exploded in popularity ?
Even though Conan, Trigun and Ruroni Kenshin being well liked they were nowhere near popular to what one piece would become, also yugi oh season zero doesn't count because it's not the one that got popular in fact season zero was super underground even for its time in japan, it was the 2000's yugioh series that got popular. https://myanimelist.net/anime/481/Yu%E2%98%86Gi%E2%98%86Oh_Duel_Monsters

That wasn't what I meant by "?" but the contradiction between the 2 quotes. Anyway there are many other shounen airing in these years, just 3 of them:

@Zarutaku Oh i can clarify the confusion, what i'm looking for is both the popular shonens that may have defined the second half of the 90's and the lesser known shonens that slipped through and were forgotten.

I can only imagine people who watched Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin thought they were not as good as DBZ or One Piece.
But Conan has more episodes than One Piece. How can you think it's not a massive hit?

@Lucifrost I didn't say it wasn't hit, i said it wasn't as much of a hit as one piece and also one piece managed to remain relevant and popular to thins while i don't know much about conan but it's not talked about as much or is in the popular zeitgeist.

@JoeChip Yes, i'm well aware it consistently sells well, but how does it compare to one piece's sales and it's ranking in the japanese readers' popularity polls ?

@Lol1268 Neither of them count since they came out in 1989 and 1992 respectively during DBZ's initial airing.
This topic is about shonens that aired between January 1996 to October 1999, after DBZ ended and before one piece started.

Looks like your reading comprehesioon skills are poor otherwise you wouldn't have missed the part of my post that says "DC movies are among the highest grossing movies in Japan.", I will add a link so you could understand better this time and I already posted a link, which you obviously didn't look, where it shows One Piece at the top of best selling manga and Conan as the third best selling manga, unless something is popular it wouldn't be among the best selling manga, simple logic, or is that too hard to understand as well.?

@BirdyTheMighty i've watched many episodes of it during my childhood when it aired on french tv in the early 2000's, i don't regard it nostalgically since i was never a big fan of it anyway, and for me it was just that murder-mystery police show that i had to sit through before watching other anime i was more interested in like digimon and hunter x hunter aired.

Because not every 3-4 year period can have Anime as popular as DBZ and One Piece, you are basically asking for the impossible 😂

@Zarutaku I suppose that's fair enough, there is a 10 year gap between when DBZ started airing and when One Piece started airing.

@deg hunter x hunter doesn't count since it started airing after one piece.
