To be honest this is the only manga ever that's COMPLETELY lost me... I guess now's the perfect time for a reread now that it's all in one package. The first half was a 10/10, the rest I can't even rate because of how much I couldn't keep track of aside from the really bad moon plotline.

8/10 for now, will never forget the beginning that's for sure.
@Thorf Exactly how me, and my sister felt. We both agree the first half was a 10\10. Amazing story amazing character development and interactions. Many mysteries and discoveries. A brand new wondrous world that is so tempting to know about. And then.. Phos goes to the moon and everything is a mess.
Honestly? I almost thought the author changed midway. Many unexplained plot lines. Mess of a story. Character interactions are very bad compared to the first half. Many loose ends. Many bases were treated badly like the whole phos\cinnabar chemistry. And that whole ending arc was just.... "this can't be the same masterpiece from 50 chapters ago right ?" was all I thinking in my head.
First half 10\10
From moon on 5\10 at best.

A shame for a work that started as a masterpiece.

@Ace-1 Yeah the switch up after the moon arc started was kind of outrageous, everything either turned to shit or fizzled out. Obviously the very short monthly chapters with year long breaks didn't help but it was almost incomprehensible half the time, and the stuff that did make sense was awful. The romance for one... what was that? Lol.

Well, this was disappointing. The gems started acting dumb after Phos went to the moon, and after he prayed all of them away, we get this really nonsensical ending, that was stretched for 10+ chapters with adding nothing of substance to the plot...

@Thorf The romance wasn't even that bad. It was kind of pointless, but still had more substance than all the chapters combined after the lunarians disappeared.

It should have ended at chapter 98. everything after that was nonsense. we dont even end with phos but with admants brother?! what the heck kinda ending is that. i would have rather a) phos prayed and everyone including phos vanished or b)phos prayed but literally only she vanished as a final screw you to all the people she tried to help and left her to rot for 10 000 years.
@justsomeguy222 Yea, introducing a new character after the last event that mattered that was like barely hinted to exist previously is just kind of weird...
It'd be like having a new character suddenly show up in Return of the King after Sauron dies. And like even that movie has an epilogue that's too long, but this manga managed to beat it.

@JaniSIr The reason it dragged on a bit at the end is because the author wanted it to end at chapter 108 for buddhist symbolism. And honestly, that goes for a lot of the series - many choices that could be considered flaws were very clearly and intentionally made for thematic reasons. Whether that justifies them or not is up to each reader though, of course.

I needed some more closure for me personally. I wish I could say I understood the purpose of the last few chapters but idk lol. I don't think Phos needed revenge to feel satisfied. Phos was finally useful and doesn't have to suffer anymore :'( Im gonna miss Phos

Manga itself and character designs sure were pretty unique, but the philosophical meaning it aims for and conclusions it reaches ended up really shallow. Add all the illogical things happening in a setting where it shouldn't be allowed and you just got a weak Eden: Endless World parody that simply didn't work out in the end.

A 6/10 I guess, mostly for creativity.

@Deane ill be honest. i think the author had zero idea how to finish this off. 1-99 was masterfully done and 100-108 almost seems like a completely different person writing it. nothing happens. thats not even phos. what i REALLY wanted answers too was what did Aechmea did to all the gems that went to the moon. literally ALL of them changed personalities and became violent(with the excepition of diamond to becomes an invalid) . even kongo goes from being caring to 'ya screw phos'.

instead everyone disappears then wierd alien person talks to rocks for 8 chapters.

@justsomeguy222 Chapters 100-108 are the epilogue of the story. With everyone gone, some new friends who are free from humanity's blemishes and (basically) infinite time ahead of her, Phos is able to finally understand where she went wrong (ch. 99). It's not just "weird alien talks to rocks," it's a reflection on everything that came before. She understands the failings of humans as a species, reflects on it, discusses it with others (with no clear answer - "both he and you are right") and reaches her own conclusion. Everything changes.

The gems didn't all change personalities and become violent, I'd honestly like to know who you're thinking of when writing that. Most of them simply became indifferent to Phos (I mean, 10 thousand years passed) and wished for nothingness along with the other Lunarians. As for the initial group that went to the moon, I feel none of them had any sudden changes of personality aside from Cairngorn. Kongo didn't go "screw you Phos," he was simply tired of his unending existence and was looking for it to end for a long time ("all this time, I've been waiting for a human to tell me that my work is done"). Diamond's aggression towards Bort was a perfect way to portray how her inferiority complex, need for validation and feelings of envy negatively affected her, showing that while Diamond was still hung up on it ages later ("Will you please fight me? I want to beat you at the one thing you do best"), without the Lunarians' threat Bort completely lost interest in fighting, instead taking an interest in raising Jellyfishes. Bort changed while Diamond was unable to move on. Diamond even proceeded to blame Bort for everything ("whose fault is it that things turned out this way?"), when her own perception had always been at the root of all her problems.

Chapters 100-108 were a philosophy dump to make everything clear, the conclusion of Phos' arc, and a glimpse at a better world. Phos left much lighter, her remaining fragments like comets lightning up the day of other Phos-to-be's from other universes, finally content. Maybe things will go differently for them. Thematically, I think it's a very beautiful ending, and the author succeeded in portrayed everything she wanted to, though it took me a month of reflection and searching for different opinions to settle my thoughts on it.

We finally reach the end, what an emotional rollercoaster and an unforgettable journey.

Quite a subtle and tranquil ending. The Pebble moved to their new home, Phos presumably becomes a comet and will be traveling through the universe and through time.

It's not over... I think, the next volume is already announced after the long hiatus.

@Deane sorry to ressurect this. what bothers me the most is that what happened to the gems on the moon was never explained. like literally every gem that went to the moons personality changed fairly drastically. its obvious that Aechmea dosed them all with something. i mean even kongo was like 'ya screw phos' when he was literally the only one who cared for her the entire time. and by entire time i mean literally like 1000 years or more.

thats what interested me the most. but nope, the author just said, whatever, gotta play elden ring. story go whoosh!

edit - oops. i didnt realise i wrote this already :D

@justsomeguy222 I mean, I get that, but a very, VERY long time passed while they didn't have the threat of the lunarians to keep them distracted and unchanging. Just look at how much the gems on earth changed while Phos and the others were on the moon, for example - I don't think there's any story necessity for Aechmea to have influenced them, and it's even more of a shock for them to have come to not care about Phos without that catalyst. Thematically, everything fits perfectly (even down to the chapter count - 108), even if it might not find be that satisfying storytelling-wise.

But again, I get where you're coming from. And I relate to wanting to play Elden Ring, too...

I read this in 3 days. It was good. I can't imagine how it must have felt waiting years with multiple hiatuses for it to end.
@HidamariSou here I am, Reading since 2018. I tought the hiatus was still ongoing😅 but yesterday I read the last chapter. Hnk was so important to me it used to be my fave manga. I still love it now, honestly. I'm so happy it finally ended and that phos was happy during the last time on heart.

initial thoughts i loved this manga. the ending was bittersweet but great. the mannerisms of humanity have been eradicated thanks to the efforts of one little gem, and they'll continue to drift through space and shine forever. phos deserved happiness

Damn the feels. Phos went through so much shit and this is where it ends. I'm curous what that thing was in the fields in the second last panel. It looks like the original Phos but not sure.

Phos's journey was a powerful one with all their different phases and I was really hoping she'd get her happy ending with everyone but it was not to be. Just looking at a picture of original Phos is enough to make me start tearing up. I dont fully understand the ending (Like did she turn into an organic plant or something?) but we were long past the point of no return to get the type of ending I would want so I'll take it. (Edit: Jesus I started this series 5 years ago)

to be honest, i found this ending a little dissapointing, since it went on hiatus leaving phos alone on the earth i was looking forward to how the reunion between the gems and phos would go down, and here well, it just happened, all the lunarians presented themselves befores the praying maching phos and in the next panel they were all gone, just like that, no discussion, or resentment or apologies, no, phos was simply used by the lunarians to advance their goal of finally dissapearing and phos was simply ok with it, no, not only phos, everyone, how everyone, even the admirabilis simply were ok with being turned into lunarians and dissapearing into nothingness, how all the gems were simply ok with living with the very same people that spend thousands of years abducting their sisters and crushing them in order to force Kongou into praying, how the lunarians keep doing that despite being evident that kongou was never going to give in to such tactis, and since kongou refused to pray in order to not wipe out all life, gems and admirabilis included, i really dont remember, did the lunarians knew of this? and if they didnt, couldnt he just tell them in order to find a solution?, looking back on those things now made me realize how conveniently some situations were resolved in order to let the plot advance more quickly, im kind of happy phos ultimately got what she wanted: for cinnabar to be included in the group and for the gems to live happy lives without the constant threat of abduction. Until the point where phos was let alone in earth the manga was a 10/10, having read this final chapters i now give it an 8/10.

I feel baited over Cinnabar and Phos' relationship and I dont mean that in a romantic/platonic way. I just feel like, in retrospective, everyone treated Phos like shit and the only ones that didnt ended up saying "Well poor thing, I hope she is alright".

The personality of the gems remind me of the fairies in Avalon Le Fae (FGO). They are so pure and innocent at heart that they can be extremely selfish and narcisistic as a consequence without noticing it. It's almost like child-like innocence.

I also expected to know more about Lapis and if she was influencing Phos before she went crazy (considering Phos had some interesting behavior after she came from the moon).

Overall I fucking hate how everyone but Phos achieved a state of tranquility, and the last volume felt like dragging on to make it 108, but it was nice to see Phos achieving peace (or some what piece). Reading 11 chspters of rocks talking felt like a weird acid trip but anyways.

9/10. Very creative, just some odd things since the gems went to the moon.

Oh geeze. I read this after watching the anime and for the last 30 chapters I was already in the dumps from life shit. This sure did not help. I'm seeing a lot of people saying it was beautiful and very symbolic but all I could think was about how bad I felt for Phos. Yes, in the end you could say they found peace, but they suffered a 10,000+ year isolation and lost all their "friends" in the process. All because they wanted to help their people not face the threat of getting abducted for all eternity. Maybe I need to revisit after getting on some antidepressants and reading up on buddhist philosophy, but right now this is just one of the most depressing things I've ever read.
