If you are talking about Himmel suddenly becoming a decrepit little old man in 50 years then yeah, it was silly, that guy didn't age well but that's one thing, seeing him suddenly becoming a tiny little old man is the part that I couldn't take seriously.

I think he got old fast because he kept the cursed dragon horn in his bedroom all the time.

This is a veeeeeeery old and common anime trope. The wholesome always get shorter as they age. You'll notice it more and more over time as you watch more anime under your belt.

This is such a common trope in anime it makes me wonder how this thread even exists.

omg I know right?! it was even more confusing for me because they already had a tiny bearded man in their group. I will admit that for most of that episode i didn't realise it was Himmel we were watching haha

It comes from the idea that old people look shorter as they age, however it is a result of them hunching over, not shrinking. It was jarring here because we had an immediate before/after look at the same character in the same episode and we KNOW people don't shrink like that. I will admit I consider that a failure in character design because we also got the opposite in Heiter whose aged design didn't follow the same stylization rules and looked more natural instead.

I'm pretty sure you also shrink but only by an inch or two. It can be more but that is only caused by health complications, which considering Heiter lasted 25 years longer and already looked older, he may have had. Add some anime overexageration into it and the man becomes a dwarf

It does happen in reality. Many old people are way smaller than they used to be.

Why do I shrink in height as I age?

Q. I am 68 years old. I used to be 5 feet, 9 inches tall. I just visited my doctor, and my height was just over 5 feet, 7 inches. What causes me to shrink, and what can I do to stop it?

A. Around age 40, most people lose some height, and the decline often accelerates in later decades. While multiple factors contribute to this "shrinkage," maintaining bone density to help prevent osteoporosis and improving posture are two ways to stand a little taller.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/why-do-i-shrink-in-height-as-i-age

and since anime is fiction it exaggerates that fact

He looked like a dwarf, people do get shorter as they grow into their final decades.
