"Sanji vs Luffy - Part 1"

If they meant Sanji's kick being their "vs" battle, then sure but overall it's only recaps of what we've seen in the last couple of episodes.

They literally showed us the same flashbacks 3 episodes ago, like it was 300 episodes ago.

My friend told me I should skip this episode since it was all flashbacks. Going into it I thought: That’s probably not bad, it would set us up emotionally for the duel. It will serve as a send off to Sanji. It started with how Sanji met Luffy and joined the crew and I thought it was doing just that, while also giving us more Baratie, the reason why Sanji has to split up with the crew. After that we got some meaningful content in Brulee sending Randolph and the goons into her world to find the furries, as well as a funny joke with Carrot saying all was fine before screaming. Luffy charges up to Sanji and we get a heartbreaking moment, silence as Luffy cheerfully calls into the carriage, and then… Sanji kicks Luffy like he did before the Usopp duel. With words that align him as a Vinsmoke rather than a Straw Hat, it seems clear that Sanji is becoming what he hates most to scare Luffy away. Perhaps out of mercy, by Sanji deciding to break it off so brutally, Luffy will no longer need to chase after him and lose his life as well. This is one way to see it, as we know Luffy doesn’t take no for an answer, and this way would potentially save the lives of Luffy and Zeff. That is, with Sanji being used as a sacrifice.

Up until this point I was thinking my friend was insane for telling me to skip this episode. But like 5 commercial breaks, and 3 long and redundant flashbacks from mere episodes ago and Sanji going from ready to fight to… sitting back down and pondering the past made this one of the oddest experiences I’ve ever seen in a mainstream anime like this. Structurally, this was the strangest a One Piece episode has been, it was jarring to say the least. It wasn’t all bad, the novelty of such a strange episode is something I’m glad I didn’t miss. In the childhood flashback we saw Judge telling Sanji to never admit he is a Vinsmoke which made the present parallel of “I am Vinsmoke Sanji, get the hell out of here you low class pirate” burn more. And it was sweet to see baby Sanji begging the cooks before Zeff to join their ranks. So, I’m not upset nor do I think this episode was necessarily bad, in some ways it definitely was, but it illuminated some nice moments and was so bizarre I wouldn’t want to miss it.

I can understand why this episode is so frustrating for people that had to wait a whole week to see things progress, but for me that is watching dozens of eps a time, the recap thing kinda reinforces the pain in Sanji's mind while he ponders what to do next.

To recap over and over the same scenes puts me in Sanji's point of view and I can relate with his sorrow, cause the loop is in his mind and tormenting him.

The new opening is good. I do agree though, recaps are okay with me most of the times, but recaps from like 2-3 episodes ago seems a lot. Guess that was done because this was a 1 hour long special. Though still, I cant believe Sanji just did and said what he just did and said to Luffy.

New opening! I like this one more, too.

Sanji's in a very tight spot with his hands and Zeff being held hostage but it was painful to see him say the exact line Luffy was certain he'd never say to his friends...

It's kind of a bummer that the entire second half was another recap of Sanji's past in its entirety instead of getting on with his duel with Luffy.

New OP is amazing & has me hyped for this arc like never before. Sanji's situation feels like a cross between Nami pretending to be an Arlong Pirate & Usopp fighting Luffy for the Going Merry. It was shocking to hear him say the exact words that Cracker spouted, but his situation is seemingly hopeless at this point (ironic how the new OP's name is "Hope"). There's no escape without defeating Germa 66 AND Big Mom, a long standing Emperor.

As for the recap, I'm going to fast forward through all of it from now on. I get that this was part of a double feature when it aired, but it's really been cheapening the emotional impact of those earlier moments. I mean come on, showing Zeff severing his leg TWICE in less than 3 minutes? I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt if the next episode pays off that emotional buildup, but man the way OP has been dragging since Dressrosa has made the experience rockier as a result. I would rather just have filler arcs or recap episodes I can skip & return to than having to deal with it cleverly mixed into canon episodes.

Bruhh WHAT IS THIS EPISODE?
The amount of flashbacks and Commercial Cuts LMAO

At the beginning flashbacks about Baratie, okay that happen so early in One Piece so i understand and then they start recaping things that just happen couple episodes ago... Toei really set a new benchmark of RECAP

There is like 5 mins of NEW CONTENT....
Holy shit, i think this is the first time One Piece episode almost made me fall asleep.

Fck you TOEI ANIMATION for doing this SHIT!!

I took the effort to rewatch the entire anime just to save up dozens of episodes in the process (It was about 60 eps btw).

Just like in dressrosa arc, nothing is happening in several episode's worth of watching time, sometimes the occasional flashbacks help, but the arc had too many silly moments already.

Luffy keeps making the same mistakes again, making the story much less serious and they milk the whole anime over and over again with these long arcs.

Can't help but to drop the rating after years of contemplation to 9/10 despite this is on of the best anime imo. I guess I'm cursed for my no-reading policy.
@PotatoFlare Yeah, this and the Dressrosa arc are being an absolute SLOG to get through, despite my love for the manga of this.

Mainly recap, but i expect next week to be peak.

It’s setting up Usopp vs Luffy vibes.

But Sanji has been great this arc. He always been a top 5 character for me. Though I still like Luffy, Zoro, and Robin more. He really is the coolest character. And probably second to Robin as smartest straw hat. Stuff like Mr.prince Albasta; opening the gate at ennis lobby. He always been great. Him being a pervert can be funny at times, but goes to far sometimes (like in Fishman island). But this arc really fleshing his character out so much. Been very needed since time skip he kind of been of a gimic or just not present.

What an absolute slap to the face. Previous preview and episode title were completely misleading. I enjoyed the retelling of Sanji's backstory with Zeff the first time, but there was no need to include it again.

The 'duel' didn't even start. All we got was Sanji kicking Luffy off the door. I get why he's needing to act like this to ensure Zeff's safety, but he's a complete idiot if he thinks Luffy is just going to walk away.
