Canon Asuna's nipple shot was awesome.
The rest... not so much.
It was pretty decent somewhere up to the second third or something. There were problems and annoyances, but nothing too irritating, typical stuff for a 6/10 to 7/10 tier anime. Then the whole thing took a giant nose dive. Everything except the ever-excellent production went to shit, can't put it in any other way.
First huge problem was the relationship between Kirito and Asuna. They were supposedly married/dating for three years, lived together, almost died together many times, they should have been super close... but they aren't. In many parts, they act like it's a mere teenage crush, in others like a couple that has just began dating, then in a few scenes they suddenly act as two star-crossed lovers, proclaiming their eternal love. It feels completely weird. When it suits him, Kirito doesn't share information with Asuna, and he even outright lies to her for some reason ("No I haven't seen any hooded girl ghosts I swear"). He violates her privacy and reads her diary. He refuses to see Asuna's mother and he never visited her home before. Then a moment later they basically talk about marriage. One of the worst written couple I have seen in a long time.
The next big issue is that unlike before, everything happens in real life. They play a game that involves their real bodies. The best player Eiji is described as a gymnast, because when he jumps around, dodges, makes fancy moves and all - it's actually him using his body. It has been clearly established that Kirito is badly out of shape before, and that makes perfect sense. True to this fact, Kirito struggles in AR combat... at first. But later on he becomes the strongest player yet again, within a tiny space of time. Just... how?! This isn't just a game, they literally claim Kirito's physical body became the fastest, strongest and most agile for absolutely no reason. That alone is a strike out.
The problems with the AR nature of the new game don't stop there - people are being thrown around and seemingly physically hurt... by AR projections. Yes, the game might make you feel pain, but if some object hits you, the best you can hope for is for you to flinch as a reflex. You won't be pushed. You can't be pushed, there's nothing pushing you. Basically, the movie treats AR more like magically created combat zones, something like Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. I have no idea what were they thinking. Also, since everyone now wears an AR headset, Yui is basically shown as a regular character (although she keeps her bottle fairy appearance for whatever reason). This would be fine, but the scene where she flies into a drone and tries to hack it was super weird and out of place.
This isn't Ghost in the Shell... If the real world actually was a futuristic one like GitS, plenty of those technology-related problems would go away. But for some reason, this is a world where all technology matches 2020s, with the sole exception of VR/AR and AI (well OK, there are also automatically opening dressers and drawers).
Yui is also able to hack into game servers, including the "impenetrable" American GGO server, and download character data, rendering the entire first arc of S2 meaningless - she could just scan the players and find who was the Death Gun.
Anyways, things get much worse when the mysterious plot starts being "explained". Most of it is literally explained, at the end there's just exposition after exposition. If you feel the exposition at the start is annoying, it get orders of magnitude worse. There is no confrontation with the villain, we get a scene where the villain talks to a hologram of the late creator of NerveGear for some reason, and he gives him a flat explanation of his plan. The plan is completely ridiculous too, by the way.
But it's still nothing compared to the "resolution". The now OP-in-real-life-too Kirito beats the best player, who gives him more exposition, then there's a big battle which somehow solves all issues. Nothing makes sense at this point. Augma is revealed to be NerveGear, familiar faces start flowing in to help, a huge timer at the wall shows how "intense" the situation is and how "close" the disaster is. It's beyond cliché, it's completely ridiculous. And when it all ends, Yuuna the AI dies because... they cleared level 100, so the server data gets formated. Excuse me, what?! Then we get some forced feels, rather typical for this series, showing that Yuuna "mattered".
Yes, everything looks and sounds great, it's fun to watch most of the time. But the story is criminally bad. I enjoyed S2, and I was hoping things will keep getting better compared to the horrible first half of S1, but this was even worse than that. It was the worst "story" in the entire series so far. If you can watch without questioning, I guess it can be enjoyable. But I need some basic level of coherency before I can get immersed.
Seeing Asuna's canon breasts was a real treat, but that will not fool me into thinking this was a great movie.
