THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The visuals keep being amazing.
The parallells to Marco increase this episode with the traveling entertainer + monkey making their appearance. It was kinda sad how Remi was sold for like half the price of that cow earlier :/.
I'm still not sure how to judge the old man, he seems pretty strict but so far he's been fairly understanding. Looking forward to finding out more about his personality.
I probably regret this post by now.

Really Jerome ? Fuck him, feel bad for Remi. But I think he would be fine with the old man, much more safer than living with that psychopath Jerome for sure.

The first impression of Vitalis doesn't seem too bad. He seems like an honest man, and you can see he's treating Remi well so far. He will probably be very strict in the first episodes, but obviously nowhere near cartoonish like the guy Rosette was sold.

At least Jerome gave Remi one last night with his mother.

Poor Remi...

It started well, but it can never last in these stories. Seeing Remi being ultimately sold was painful to watch. I don't know what is waiting Remi on his journey, and I don't know why I do this to myself, but I'm here to stay.

The old guy seems like he will be a kind teacher at least. He's in some of the posters of the show looking like a wise old man so... yeah.

it's always a motherfker named jerome... what the hell? sneaky, shady, he sold his son for forty francs... yeah, it's not technically his son, but his wife clearly was extremely attached to him and raised remi since birth. jerome may as well sell off his wife then, f^ck it. and what the hell is he gonna do with that chump change? spend it on booze? goddamn ridiculous. so far, this is the most eye-catching episode. lots of stained glass imagery and scene rotations, like where remi was waiting for their transaction to be finalized. (not that he knew for sure at the time.) very nice voice acting, i'm gonna assume remi is voiced by an actual child.

think i went numb for a sec at the end, teared up and actually was too demoralized by the misfortune that i ended up letting the ending play out. i don't watch openings and endings that much but i wondered what i got myself into by watching yet another depressing old anime. the tragedy is written on the title for christ's sake

The scene of jerome tossing the stick in to the fire, the fire engulfs it then begins to swirl then transitions to remi sleeping but the swirling effect continues. SO GOOD. You dont see visual language like that anymore. The shot of the mother on her knees begging to god in front of the church. Pure emotion and it wasnt even animated it was a single image. Masterful direction.
