THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Probably my least favorite of the Nautilus episodes. It's good in that it provides some important turning points and sets up a cliffhanger suggesting for a big battle, but at the same time it doesn't have the wonder or excitement as the better ones. You may find Nadia very annoying in this episode, particularly the way she mistreats Nemo (based on her irrational grown-ups are evil view), and later Jean (about his friendship with Electra, even when he somewhat awkwardly tries to compliment her), but one has the sense that she realizes the error of her behavior when she has a talk with Electra.

Interesting note: in the "Nautilus Story" compilation, which Anno personally supervised sometime after finishing the show (a more streamlined version of the story), only the beginning of this episode (where Gargoyle communicates with his officers) and the ending (starting from Electra asking Nemo how long he intends to keep the children on the submarine).

I actually really liked the character interactions throughout this episode a lot. Sanson, Marie and King are adorable and hilarious I love when they're all together.

Since Marie and Sanson found themselves facing the enemy on the island, escaping from them aboard a railway cart, these two have become inseparable, to this I was reflecting lately. Today's episode, despite having started very slowly in the narrative rhythm and even deviating from the main plot, I did not find the narration boring, rather it has even better portrayed the characters' characters and their character changes based on their interactions with others characters. The final part of the episode was very exciting, who knows if this time Captain Nemo will be noticed in his assessments or fall into the trap of the enemy, since everything that is happening is just a big cheat, as it wanted to let us know the narration.

Pretty nice episode, we pretty much got another confirmation that Nemo might be or rather is Nadia's father and boy than that damn cliffhanger! Really looking forwards to the next episode actually.

This episode for me at least felt a bit different in terms of tone in certain areas from previous episodes but I still enjoyed it :D

The shot of Lord Gargoyle starring into the sun from his airship and the sun representing the iris and pupil of the eye was excellent from an artistic and symbolic stand point great choice by the animators! However, some of the discussion with his crew made me scratch my head a bit (could just be a mis worded translation XD) because I was certain Gargoyle was an organization that was very secretive and they had a good number of followers but the way they discuss their power and reach makes it seem the have almost the population of a nation rather then several thousand members. They said their economic disruptions allowed them to seize 80% of world trade but that would mean they would have to make themselves known to other nations even if they were perfectly secret in destroying trading vessels various nations who are allies are bound to confirm this mysterious group suddenly is approaching them with new trade lines it would only be a matter of time before they put the pieces together and declare war on this organization. But, again could just be a mistranslation XD and they meant to imply a smaller more secretive network of control and reach.

But, then we get some excellently essential Electra fanservice very important and appreciated as always ^-^ Nadia misses not being around Jean and him not being there (to help with their child Marie XD it is basically how it is :D) but she causes Marie to cry but not actually as it was a trick taught to her by Mr. Sanson 🀣 teaching her you sometimes have to lie and cheat LOL good to see they are as close as ever :) and we get the sneezing when being talked about negatively bit always fun! Grandis looks great as usual even when doing regular things like laundry X3 but all her hard and caring work was ruined by Jean's latest invention and even further ruined when they lose all the laundry due to the emergency dive that had to be initiated but she looked so cute getting angry and being carried away XD I also liked the mental image Marie has towards Electra she did not look half bad looking all over the top scary ^-^

Now I can understand Nadia a bit better since her argument comes from wanting to defend Jean even though he was at fault even if it was an accident and Nemo was right to scold him in fact even Jean understands that! But, I understand Nadia wanting Jean to stand up for himself and where her frustration is coming from it certainly is easier to see her point of view unlike previous instances XD we even get a quick glance at a holographic photo which looks to be a younger Nemo and perhaps Nadia's brother and parents :D

Like I said it is easier to see where Nadia is coming from but her blow up this episode at Nemo was unfounded if that makes sense. Nadia you said you did not understand why Jean was scolded but you answered your own question he accidentally altered the Garfish war sub and thus, put many lives at risk all things considered he got off pretty easy but I suppose this anger and frustration coming out of her is not just about this incident. Also, Nadia come on just because they were able to destroy the Garfish that is not a guarantee and still put lives at risk and the all grown ups suck argument!?! Nadia I am not a fan of slapping but you gotta get some sense and perspective! Glad Grandis was able to talk to her and shift her focus to Jean and his Mother complex πŸ˜‚ my goodness Grandis I did not realize you were quite the psychologist! And naturally trash talks Electra ah friendship ^-^

At least Electra gave Jean some good advice it is true if you feel that way about a special lady in your life tell her she is beautiful and she will surely be happy to hear that πŸ€— of course Jean completely screws it up by mentioning he got that advice from Electra 🀣 awaking Nadia's inner insanity based on those visuals Jean Jean Jean despite being a genius you can be awful dumb sometimes πŸ˜† I mean think about it: well she does not like me spending time with Miss Electra I KNOW I WILL SAY I GOT THE ADVICE FROM ELECTRA πŸ€ͺ think Jean! THINK!

Well at least Electra and Nadia talk and bond a bit in the bath and we hear Electra vocalize how she feels about Nemo as well. Also, it is good Electra spells out why they need to stop Gargoyle and Nemo is not an evil man and him and his crew are the only ones capable of stopping this evil menace because apparently Nadia could not put those pieces together herself πŸ™„ maybe her and Jean are more similar in their thinking then they know πŸ˜‚

I did really like the way this episode's final moments were the atmosphere seemed to completely shift and it seems Electra knows that Nemo intends to stop Gargoyle at the cost of his own life. Seems a great battle for survival is around the corner and I cannot wait to see how it plays out! So while it was a rather odd episode it still contained some fun throughout!

Also the expression on her face at the end of the bath scene shows how she feels very, very regretful. I mean, think about it. She had misjudged Nemo, Electra, and the Nautilus, and even lashed out at Jean. I think she felt quite bad for all that from the look on her face.

I think you are right about her being regretful and feeling bad about how she treated them and it is backed up by the way she reacts in the next few episodes as well. I was mostly meaning that I was surprised she could not figure out that Gargoyle needed to be stopped for herself and demonized Nemo for so long despite it being obvious that him and his crew are the only ones capable of stopping him and his organization. Then she acted surprised when Electra basically spelled it out for her like it never had even crossed her mind in the first place XD

I find myself annoyed with Nadia again. Considering what happened, I believe that both Jean and Nemo acted appropriately.
Also, I am now wondering if Nemo is her uncle or something. (he is too old to be her brother)

Still, it is good that Electra and Nadia talked this out so progress to get rid of misunderstandings has been made. Alas, the notorious episodes we have heard are just around the corner and this character growth is one of the casualties I have heard of.

Does it make any sense that a submarine could pick up such a small explosion on the surface over a distance of several kilometers? Somehow I have my doubts.

And somehow it never occured to me, but after seeing the hologram I would assume:
Captain Nemo will turn out to be Nadias father.
The adult standing next to him will be the villain. (He refers to Nemo as "old friend".)
The only question is who her big brother is.

That would make some kind of sense if you remember that the whale said something about the thing that she is looking for is closer than she thinks.

Jean acknowledges he was in the wrong yet Nadia decides to defend him. when he's scolded by Nemo.

Y'know this could be interesting; if Neo Atlantean find (Nemo's jacket in the ocean because we know the Nautilus crew didn't bring it inside the sub during the emergency Jean caused) maybe they will assume he and his crew are dead...

The Neo Atlantean cult really have their hands everywhere (evident when they got the U.S. Navy to fire upon the Nautilus).

So Nemo has a holographic photo of himself with his family, he has a wife, a son and a baby girl (Nadia perhaps?) is that what the whale meant?

Halfway into the show now and Nadia is still as bratty and obnoxious as she was from the start. Does she ever grow up and stop being one of the most annoying protagonists in existence? Also, how does the show still at this point have time for a scene of Marie playing house?

@TheCrimsonEye I remember a few eps back the US army was revealed to be working for a Neo Atlantian, but still seemed unaware of them. Maybe they're covering themselves up through lies and manipulation.
